The Rev. Canon Dr.

 Winifred Gaines

One of my heroes in ministry and life, Canon Winnie Gaines, passed away yesterday.  Winnie, ordained in 1978, was the first woman in our diocese to be ordained a priest.  She was a pioneer, pursuing ordination in the face of significant opposition.  She served as Canon Pastor until her "retirement" in 2002 and then Canon for Visitation until a few years ago.  Winnie is responsible for the remarkable Stephen Ministry program that is still a cornerstone of life at Trinity Cathedral.  She has been a pastoral presence in the midst of so many moments of crisis and joy.  Prior to her ordination, she served as a hospital and hospice chaplain for ten years.  When Andrea, Mark, Laura and I came to scout out Sacramento and Trinity Cathedral in 2005 over Thanksgiving break, Winnie and Bob invited us into their home for our first Thanksgiving dinner in what was going to become our new community.  Winnie will always serve as an inspiration to me.

Please hold Bob and all of Winnie's loving family in your prayers.

Winnie's memorial service will be at Trinity Cathedral on Friday evening, October 9.

Blessings,
Brian

Tour de Pink for
Breast Cancer

October will bring the 3 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink has been the past 2 years, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 23-25, starting in Santa Barbara, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page by following this link.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month. If I Plug My Ears, God Can't Tell Me What To Do by Jessie Clemence describes the Biblical challenges of Moses, David and Peter and gives modern day parallels-if we choose to listen. He tells how his wife suffering from fibromyalgia had a really bad day and jammed a whole bottle of lethal drugs in her mouth as he stood dumbfounded. His young daughters said "No!" and cleared her mouth. In shock, he went to preach at an evening service and could only talk about the value of human life and what a waste suicide was. After the service, three people thanked him for his message, saying that they had considered the act.

Diaconal intern

Hello! I'd like to introduce myself. I am Donna Arellano, a Postulant for the Holy Order of the Diaconate (I love saying that!), a 2nd year student at the School for Deacons in Berkeley, and a member of St. Michael's in Carmichael. One of the requirements for Postulants is that we worship at a parish other than our own for 2 years, and I am very excited that I will be attending Trinity Cathedral starting on October 4.   Over time, I'll be worshipping at all services. I'm looking forward to getting to know you, and to joining with you in Christian ministry and fun times. My hobbies are camping, reading, animals, and rooting for the Philadelphia Eagles! Please come by and say hi - I'm even friendly to Dallas fans.

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on October 1

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:15pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the voting rights, making poll taxes and literacy tests as prerequisites to vote unconstitutional.  Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi chronicles her journey as a young girl and as a woman in the thick of the Civil Rights movement in the South.  Come and discuss her journey on Thursday nights in the Cathedral Bookstore.  The book is available for purchase in the bookstore.  This will be facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss.

Mental Health 101
This series will delve into the complex issues related to mental health. We will share information about the local system of support, the places where glaring gaps exist, and our county's plans to augment services.
OCTOBER 1 - Family & Friends
Lawrence Liseno, who is a member of the Board of Directors of the local chapter of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI Sacramento) will share a first-hand story of why and how he discovered NAMI and how NAMI benefited him. Using a Socratic method of presentation, he will bring the group to an even higher level of awareness as they consider sound mental health practices.

The organization began close to forty years ago in a church basement with a few mothers who were trying to find education and support for their loved ones who had a mental health problem.  Facing many of the same issues, family members discovered that stigma is one of the primary hurdles to overcome, and learned that honest and frank stories from family members' help educate our communities and help give hope to those in recovery.  The group helps members understand that mental illness is not a character flaw, it's a physical brain illness triggered by heredity or sometimes severe trauma.  And family members can learn coping skills, the vagaries of mental disorders, community professional resources and sundry benefits of banding together by participating in NAMI educational courses and support groups.  NAMI does not offer professional treatment; it offers something just as important: stories and examples of how family and consumers can reach and maintain consistent recovery from mental illness.  In short, this key support
organization offers hope.

Pope Francis and the Environment
Discussion of Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) TREE (Trinity Respecting Earth and Environment) members will be studying and discussing Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) for four weeks in September.  The Pope touches on every major environmental and economic issue facing humanity today thoughtfully and compassionately.

His Encyclical Letter deserves to be taken seriously and, more importantly, acted on. Members of TREE will facilitate this study and we invite you to come join the conversation.

In the past, this interfaith service has been organized by the Sacramento Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and other community groups. This year, Trinity Cathedral assumes responsibility for this significant event.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and its allies.

Volunteers are needed to help with the planning and organization of the service and the reception following. Contact Michael Donnoe at mdonnoe@gmail.com or Kathleen Montgomery at ladyiris49@gmail.com to offer your time and creativity!
