I first encountered Dewitt Jones at a week-long Centering Prayer retreat.  We watched a DVD of a presentation by Dewitt titled "Celebrate What's Right With the World."  I was transfixed with his message and the images he used to reinforce it.  I was inspired again with a different video presentation of his at a CREDO clergy development retreat.  And now I get to hear, and see him in person.  We are blessed to have Dewitt Jones speaking at Trinity Cathedral on Friday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.  He will also be offering a phone photography workshop on Saturday, October 3 at 10:00 a.m.  Tickets are on sale at the bookshop.   You can learn more about him here.  There is a button at the bottom left of this page that takes you to a brief video introduction.

I promise Dewitt will be entertaining and inspiring.

Blessings,
Brian

Trinity Cathedral volunteers lead a 5:45 evening service of scripture and prayer each time Safe Ground guests are on campus for dinner. Between 15 and 40 guests attend the service; some light a candle for a loved one; others pray alone or with a cathedral volunteer. For many, this is their first invitation and welcoming into a holy place.

Family Promise

Reflection...

A moment of reflection as we close the 2015 chapter of Family Promise here at Trinity Cathedral. You helped shelter eleven families, which was comprised of thirty-three children! Many of you help provide a meal, donated sheets and other items. While still others spent hours doing laundry, hauling the trailer and entertaining the young guests. This ministry would not be possible if not for the support of parishioners.

We heard this past Sunday from the Gospel reading...
Mark 9: "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." Instantly I was reminded of tender angels in need of a place to lay their heads.

Thank you again,
Eleanor & MeriAngel

CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the voting rights, making poll taxes and literacy tests as prerequisites to vote unconstitutional.  Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi chronicles her journey as a young girl and as a woman in the thick of the Civil Rights movement in the South.  Come and discuss her journey on Thursday nights in the Cathedral Bookstore.  The book is available for purchase in the bookstore.  This will be facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss.

Mental Health 101
This series will delve into the complex issues related to mental health. We will share information about the local system of support, the places where glaring gaps exist, and our county's plans to augment services.
September 24 - Consumer Panel
Three persons with the lived experience of having mental illness will be presenting their stories of hope and wellness, overcoming the challenges associated with having a mental illness.  They will be sharing their paths to recovery.   They will also discuss ways of overcoming the stigma associated with mental illness.

Pope Francis and the Environment
Discussion of Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) TREE (Trinity Respecting Earth and Environment) members will be studying and discussing Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) for four weeks in September.  The Pope touches on every major environmental and economic issue facing humanity today thoughtfully and compassionately.

His Encyclical Letter deserves to be taken seriously and, more importantly, acted on. Members of TREE will facilitate this study and we invite you to come join the conversation.

Follow this link for classes offered beginning in October.
This Sunday - September 27

The scheduled preacher at the

7:30, 9:00 and 11:15 services is

Want to know about more this class? Consider the book's subtitle: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources. The book is available in the bookshop, and is recommended for those who want to gain the most from this enlightening topic. However, reading the book isn't necessary to participate in the class.
30/40's and Beyond
Meets in the Conference Room at 10:15am

We will continue discussing Transforming Questions, which invites faithful questioning for those new to the Christian faith and longtime members. We will explore, through God's Word, our own faith journey and continue to ask the questions that stir within us.  This study is  produced by Forward Movement and each participant will have their own guidebook to reference and reflect in. Questions? contact Amy Dierlam - dnarock@pacbell.net.

Trinity Cathedral Celebrates
The Feast of St. Francis
with
The Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 4, 9:00am Family Service

Bring your pet to be blessed and
a donation of pet food to help Sacramento Pet Food Bank

On Sunday, Oct. 4th, we will gather in the Great Hall for the Blessing of the Animals in honor of the Feast of St. Francis. Francis, born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone (1181-1226), underwent a radical conversion that led to the renouncing of his personal wealth and choosing a life of humility and poverty for the sake of Christ. Francis is revered to this day for his love of God's creatures and for how they increase our capacity to love. His life is remembered at the Cathedral with the Blessing of the Animals where we gather with our critters great and small in the Great Hall for music, scripture, prayers of gratitude and individual critter blessings! So bring your pets of all variety and species and join us in this festive day. If you think it would be too stressful for your pet to be there in person, you can bring a picture of your animal companion to be blessed in its absence.

All who are able are invited to bring canned or dry pet food to be distributed to those who help care for the Sacramento Pet Food Bank, which is in a regional partnership with the SPCA and the county shelter.  The City of Sacramento Animal Care Services shelter on Front Street serves more clients than the other two facilities, giving out 3000 pounds of food per week to 2000 needy pet owners who can obtain food once a month.  They also provide collars and tags as well as immunization shots and spaying/neutering for the pets of the needy so they will not have to surrender their pets.  The goal of the shelter is to have "seventy-five percent of the animals leaving with a heartbeat."

Please be generous in your donations of canned and dry cat food and dog food to help the pets of those with limited means.

We will also have a pet food drive on October 4th after each of the Sunday services. The pet food drive is to help our neighbors who want to keep their pets but can't do so without some assistance.
You are invited!

Service of Remembrance

On Sunday, October 18th at 4:00 pm, Trinity Cathedral will host the seventeenth annual Service of Remembrance in memory of our brothers and sisters who have suffered violent deaths by murder or suicide as a result of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression.

In the past, this interfaith service has been organized by the Sacramento Chapter of PFLAG (Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) and other community groups. This year, Trinity Cathedral assumes responsibility for this significant event.

Please mark your calendars and plan to attend to stand in solidarity with the LGBT community and its allies.

Volunteers are needed to help with the planning and organization of the service and the reception following. Contact Michael Donnoe at mdonnoe@gmail.com or Kathleen Montgomery at ladyiris49@gmail.com to offer your time and creativity!

"Remember their lives with love. Bear witness to the atrocity of their deaths. Affirm together that violence and hatred must end."

The Rev. Steve Skiffington, Deacon
Service of Remembrance for our Pets
Tuesday, October 27 at 6:00pm in the Cathedral

All are invited to a short service of remembrance for our pets who have passed away.  God has generously graced us with loving companions who have brightened our journey.  This service gives us a chance to be thankful for their lives and the joy they have given us and our families. You are invited to bring the ashes or a picture of your animal companion that has passed away.  Special prayers will be said this night in thanksgiving in honor of their lives.  All are
welcome.

Growing in Faith...

What "Growing in Faith" Means in my Life.
by Jeanne Jurgens

Trinity has a lot of different ministries to offer, for that I am extremely grateful. My journey at Trinity started in the Newcomers group, then progressed into the "Introduction to..." series of classes. I was drawn to and excited about the teachings of the Bible & listening to the discussions and exploration into the history of the Church and many other intro classes. I realized I was home and I wanted to be confirmed as an Episcopalian, a decision I will cherish for a lifetime.

I then decided to participate in the Catechumenate meetings "Growing in Faith." Little did I know how these meetings would play a huge role in my life. I soon realized that not only did the meetings allow me to experience the Bible and my faith on a whole different level, but I learned a lot about myself. It was my chance to dig deep, using my heart, mind and soul in a way everyone should experience. As time went on, my heart and spirit were opened in a way I cannot explain. Some of the most meaningful experiences for me were hanging the "Stations of the Cross" at the start of Lent (walking the path Jesus did before he gave his life to forgive US for our sins); a day retreat at the Mercy Center where we focused on the Apostles Creed and wrote our own creeds, fitting for this journey; listening to and experiencing other's expressions, views and insights during our times of Lectio (a type of Scripture reflection); experiencing an assortment of different ways to pray. My understanding and experience of the Mass grew as we explored the meaning of what it is to worship together. "GIF" does not only mean "Growing in Faith" it is also about growing within. It's about letting Love explode in every direction possible. It's about listening and sharing stories with others in the group, and growing in family. I would have never dreamt that in a lifetime I would make so many close, dear friends in such a short period of time. I became so attached to the entire Catechumen Ministry that, when asked if I would be part of the leadership team, I was overjoyed. There are times when I honestly believe that involvement in Growing in Faith is central to my faith life. My heart is so into this process that I get emotional every time I think of the experiences and love I have had since the start of my catechumenate journey (what we call "Growing in Faith").

Jeanne joined Trinity in 2013 and is involved in the ministries of usher, hospitality, Flower Committee, Stole Stitchers, and Growing in Faith, first as a candidate, then as a sponsor and currently as a member of the leadership team.
 ~~~~~~
"Growing in Faith" begins on November 1, All Saints Day. Take this opportunity to explore your sainthood whether you seek baptism, confirmation, renewal of your faith or being a sponsor. The meetings are on Sundays, 3 - 5 PM. Save your Sunday afternoons and look for further announcements as we get closer to November.
