"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

One of the things I've noticed in my time as a priest is that some things come in waves.  It seems we are in the midst of a wave of deaths of people who have been very active in the life of the congregation.  We recently held the memorial service for Donna Clark Cheek.  Recently Ralph Bonds, Maggie O'Neil and Eddie Lee have died.  Ralph's service is tomorrow at 1pm, Maggie's is Saturday 9/26 at 10am and the time for Eddie's has not yet been set.  Additionally we have a few others who are now on hospice care.  This is a tender time for many and I ask your prayers for those who are dying, those who are grieving and the pastoral care team serving them.

I want to report on some of my recent activity:

Ghana:  Over the past four years, the Chicago Consultation, of which I am a co-convener, has held three consultations in Africa.  At these consultations we bring together Anglican/Episcopal clergy, scholars and LGBT activists to pray, study scripture and talk about how we may work together to make our continents safer for sexual minorities. The first, in 2011 was in South Africa.  The second in Kenya was in 2013 and the most recent was last week in Ghana.  I am pleased to report that we are noticing significant progress.  At this recent consultation, we were not only hosted by a bishop, but he was willing to be named in our official statement.  As a result of the conference, we are planning on producing a series of Bible studies and a resource for clergy offering pastoral care.  We are also asking churches in Africa to be places of sanctuary for people who are assaulted because of their gender or sexual orientation.  We are also looking at ways we can make people aware of the complicity of groups in the U.S. who have spent considerable money exporting homophobia to Africa.  You can see our official statement here.

Burning Man:  Prior to going to Ghana I spent the week at Burning Man in northern Nevada.  The day after I returned home, and the day before flying to Ghana, I preached about the experience in what was my longest, and surprisingly my most popular sermon ever.  Like all our sermons, it was posted online.  The sermon was shared by people, mostly "Burners" and has now been seen almost 18,000 times.  I am getting emails daily from people all over the world who were touched by the sermon.  It will take a while to discern what this means but I do think it points to a spiritual hunger and an openness, or maybe even an eagerness, to engage the church. You can see the sermon here and my photos here

Digital Camera

Donate your unused

Digital Camera

"Do you have any out of use digital cameras you would be willing to donate to my students? I teach English at Hiram Johnson High School and have taken on Yearbook at the last minute this year. Part of the reason Hiram Johnson students continue to permeate a negative image (even though my students are AMAZING) is based on lack of resources. We need a few good digital cameras for my kids to check out for special events and games. If you have a digital camera sitting in a closet/on a shelf waiting to make my students feel important and accomplished, I would be super grateful."

Please bring your donations to Pat Underwood at the Trinity Cathedral Office and she'll be sure to get them to the Hiram Johnson High School yearbook teacher.

The Reading Corner...

There's always something new in our library, which you can check out on the first Sunday of the month.       ~~Phyllis Ehlert

The Lost World of Adam and Eve by John H. Walton discusses the lack of conflict between science and religion when the creation story is taken in its cultural context. A garden represents sacred space, Adam and Eve are not persons but archetypes. The author writes, "Genesis I has more to do with order, functions and roles than with the material cosmos." Fascinating reading.

Canon Link back from Sabbatical

It is GREAT to be back from my
Canon in Wonderland
summer sabbatical, and among my friends at Trinity Cathedral. Many have asked what I during my summer off, so I have written a blog post about my adventures, which can be accessed by following this link.

I am grateful for the opportunity to take this time off every five years, and can truly say that I have returned full of energy and feeling positive and renewed!

Thank you,
Canon David Link

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

 on September 17

Compline - 6:00pm

Dinner - 6:15pm

 Classes - 7:00pm

Feeling Overwhelmed?

Are you feeling overwhelmed by the drought, fires, environment, and social ills surrounding us?   Come to Thursday Night at the Cathedral class on the Pope's Encyclical Letter, and find relief, perspective, and guidance in the group discussion, led this week by TREE member Gay Ann White.  She will discuss Chapter 1: "What is Happening to our Common Home?" and Chapter 2: "The Gospel of Creation."
CLASSES

Holy Wholly One, Behold Me, Wholly One
Most of the science of philosophy has taught us that God is omnipotent- all powerful, omniscient- all knowing and omnipresent. Much of the theology of tradition tells us that God is Holy- in the vision of Isaiah: Holy Holy Holy. The Holy One is usually defined with a separate and exclusive nature. We will look at a revelation of the Divine as not exclusive but rather as the All Inclusive One. We will learn how to love, and be loved by, a Whole God with a Whole heart and how to love a Whole neighbor as the Whole self is loved.  This class will be facilitated by Morey Lloyd.

Coming of Age in Mississippi
On August 6, 1965, President Lyndon Johnson signed the voting rights, making poll taxes and literacy tests as prerequisites to vote unconstitutional.  Anne Moody's Coming of Age in Mississippi chronicles her journey as a young girl and as a woman in the thick of the Civil Rights movement in the South.  Come and discuss her journey on Thursday nights in the Cathedral Bookstore.  The book is available for purchase in the bookstore.  This will be facilitated by Susan Hotchkiss.

Mental Health 101
This series will delve into the complex issues related to mental health. We will share information about the local system of support, the places where glaring gaps exist, and our county's plans to augment services.
September 17 - Supporting Our Students:  Addressing the Mental Health Needs of Children
Barbara Kronick, L.C.S.W, the Director of Student Support and Health Services for the Sacramento City Unified School District, will provide attendees with information on the estimated scope of need by students in the K-12 educational system, the framework used by SCUSD to identify students in need of mental health services and the resources available to support children and their families. She will also talk about some of the innovative ways that schools have been working with other community partners in recent years to assure the integration of services, and share what has been done by educators to build capacity so that children in crisis can receive mental health "first aid" as early as possible.

Pope Francis and the Environment
Discussion of Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) TREE (Trinity Respecting Earth and Environment) members will be studying and discussing Pope Francis' Encyclical Letter (Laudato Si) for four weeks in September.  The Pope touches on every major environmental and economic issue facing humanity today thoughtfully and compassionately.

His Encyclical Letter deserves to be taken seriously and, more importantly, acted on. Members of TREE will facilitate this study and we invite you to come join the conversation.

The Soul of Money
Meets in Room A at 10:15amThe Soul of Money
Two years ago we offered a popular class based on Lynne Twist's book, The Soul of Money. Now we're offering a reprise. It's not just a repeat, as fresh material will be included each week.

Bud Swank will be leading most sessions, with Vaughn Wolff and Susan Van Dyke tag teaming for certain sessions.

Want to know about more this class? Consider the book's subtitle: Reclaiming the Wealth of Our Inner Resources. The book is available in the bookshop, and is recommended for those who want to gain the most from this enlightening topic. However, reading the book isn't necessary to participate in the class.
30/40's and Beyond
Meets in the Conference Room at 10:15am

We will begin Transforming Questions, which invites faithful questioning for those new to the Christian faith and longtime members. We will explore, through God's Word, our own faith journey and continue to ask the questions that stir within us.  This study is  produced by Forward Movement and each participant will have their own guidebook to reference and reflect in. Questions? contact Amy Dierlam - dnarock@pacbell.net.

Trinity Cathedral Celebrates
The Feast of St. Francis
with
The Blessing of the Animals
Sunday, October 4, 9:00am Family Service

Bring your pet to be blessed and
a donation of pet food to help Sacramento Pet Food Bank

On Sunday, Oct. 4th, we will gather in the Great Hall for the Blessing of the Animals in honor of the Feast of St. Francis. Francis, born Giovanni Francesco di Bernardone (1181-1226), underwent a radical conversion that led to the renouncing of his personal wealth and choosing a life of humility and poverty for the sake of Christ. Francis is revered to this day for his love of God's creatures and for how they increase our capacity to love. His life is remembered at the Cathedral with the Blessing of the Animals where we gather with our critters great and small in the Great Hall for music, scripture, prayers of gratitude and individual critter blessings! So bring your pets of all variety and species and join us in this festive day. If you think it would be too stressful for your pet to be there in person, you can bring a picture of your animal companion to be blessed in its absence.

All who are able are invited to bring canned or dry pet food to be distributed to those who help care for the Sacramento Pet Food Bank, which is in a regional partnership with the SPCA and the county shelter.  The City of Sacramento Animal Care Services shelter on Front Street serves more clients than the other two facilities, giving out 3000 pounds of food per week to 2000 needy pet owners who can obtain food once a month.  They also provide collars and tags as well as immunization shots and spaying/neutering for the pets of the needy so they will not have to surrender their pets.  The goal of the shelter is to have "seventy-five percent of the animals leaving with a heartbeat."

Please be generous in your donations of canned and dry cat food and dog food to help the pets of those with limited means.

We will also have a pet food drive on October 4th after each of the Sunday services. The pet food drive is to help our neighbors who want to keep their pets but can't do so without some assistance.
You are invited!
