"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

On Sunday, toward the end of the 12:45 service, The Rev. Kathy Hopner and a group of teenagers walked into church seeking a blessing.  They were about to leave for their mission trip to San Francisco.  The small group of worshipers were happy to oblige.  Judging by the pictures Kathy has posted on Facebook, Kathy, Megan and the teens are having a good time.  I remember a priest I worked with who used to say that one week in camp or on a mission trip could be as transformational as an entire year of Sunday School or youth group.  Two weeks earlier, Kathy took a group of younger teens on a mission trip to a Paiute reservation in Nevada.  I know the teens participating will have memories from these trips that last their entire lives.

Back at Trinity, there are some adults who have been working  on their own mission - beautifying the Cathedral.  Eileen Harvey-Qualset, Peter Perera and our Junior Warden Kevin Sanders have been working with contractors to power wash the exterior and to repair the floor of the Cathedral. Ken Hearne has been working diligently on the floors.  And we have been getting new organ pipes installed. The Cathedral sparkles!

Caring for the physical structure that make so much ministry possible is sacramental work and I am grateful to all of you who offer financial and in-kind support.

Stephen Ministry at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is a program of caring. Stephen Ministers are trained to give one-on-one care to someone who is experiencing a life-changing event: grief, illness, job loss, divorce, a new baby in the family, loss of a loved one, a difficult move, an ailing family member.

We are trained for 50 hours, then commissioned to serve in this ministry for at least two years. In addition to Continuing Education, we also receive support from our peers as we meet with our care receivers.

As Stephen Ministers, we do not: fix anyone; suggest solutions; give pep talks or direction; go shopping; help around the house; express any kind of judgment. We are not therapists or part of a medical team, although we may meet with someone who is experiencing this kind of support.

We do: show up, listen, pray and listen some more . . . week after week, sometimes more than once a week, for about an hour.

Our ministry is simple, effective and dynamic, changing with the occurrences of life, meeting needs as they evolve and change with each situation.

Our next training class begins October 5th.  For information, contact Cherie Chamness in the bookshop, call 916-442-9194 or email Susan Wilson at snbwilson@gmail.com

Volunteer Opportunities...
SAFE GROUND
NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Are you an amateur (or professional) chef, who likes to cook for others?  Do you have good organizational skills, and enjoy helping to guide others in the kitchen?  Trinity Cathedral's Outreach Ministries need your help!

We don't have enough "Chefs / Dinner Captains" to meet our commitment to the homeless community through Safe Ground next month.  If you feel called to serve our community through this ministry, we would love to hear from you!  The volunteer time commitment for our Captains / Chefs is only once per month - cooking and leading Trinity's kitchen on a Wednesday afternoon from about 2pm - 7pm.  We would prefer that Chefs are able to make a commitment to Safe Ground for at least 6 months - which is just 6 dinner services!

If this ministry appeals to you or someone you know, please contact Michael Donnoe, Trinity Cathedral's coordinator for the Safe Ground Pilgrimage ministry.  He may be reached via cell at (916) 992-3196, or email at mdonnoe@gmail.com.

August 6-- Robert L. Litchfield, Jr., is both an author and an advocate for the homeless in Auburn, California, where he has been making waves because of his most recent book. He describes himself as "a conservative, Republican, business attorney and very spiritual person."

His latest book came about a when friend asked him to write an article to support the maker of a video about homelessness. Litchfield thought this would be easy, interview "three or four of these guys." He found, "I was amazed at how easy it was to fall in love with these people." He went further, writing Until they have faces: 110 interviews with the homeless people of Auburn, California, which he is selling as a fundraiser for homeless services in his town. This is his seventh book.

Robert has participated in and served in leadership positions with the Boy Scouts, Rotary, Habitat for Humanity, Caring About Kids, Salvation Army, Presbyterian Church, and board of the Truckee River Bank.

Sir Michael Tippett

Some consider Sir Michael Tippett the equal of Benjamin Britten. Maybe you've wondered who Sir Michael was. Here is what Clive Paget, writing in Limelight, Australia's Classical Music and Arts Magazine had to say.

"Out and proud? You betcha! One of the few twentieth century composers who examined and discussed his own sexuality, Sir Michael Tippett was a brave light in a period of relative darkness. Unlike the tightlipped Benjamin Britten, he was out there almost waving the rainbow flag. Not that he had it easy: "Being unable to enter into a biological relationship with a woman, it seemed that I was excluded from an understanding of half the human race", he wrote. His relationship with Wilfred Franks, a young painter, produced, in his own words "the deepest, most shattering experience of falling in love", and was "a major factor underlying the discovery of my own individual musical 'voice'." The first composer to seriously portray gay characters in his operas, and to explore the possibilities of bisexuality, Tippett was a true pioneer."

Please join us in Room A at 7 pm on Thursday August 13 to hear about Sir Michael's music and his life. We will listen to and focus on "A Child of Our Time," one of his best known works.            ~~Loren Weatherly

Coming Up...

INTRODUCTION TO THE NEW TESTAMENT

Begins on Sunday, August 23 at

10:15am in Room A

Are you smarter than a 5th Grader? Fifth graders at Trinity spend the entire academic year studying the Bible. If you think they might have one up on you, then attend the course, Introduction to the New Testament from August 23 - November 1 in Room A after the 9:00 service. Don't feel you have to attend all classes. Please bring a Bible. (Early on we will talk about recommended translations.) Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The New Testament for Beginners is recommended but not required. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.) NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED. After all, our 5th graders don't know that much about it before their 5th grade year. But our 6th graders now know that Luke wrote something else besides a gospel! They know that Revelation is wild and crazy but not necessarily about tomorrow's destruction of the "bad guys."

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the New Testament. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the New Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the 4 Gospels & Acts of the Apostles, the letters of St. Paul and others, and The Book of Revelation"!

Jerry Paré teaches this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California. He is repeatedly reminded of the truth of John 1:1:  "In the beginning was the Word"!

Save the Date:

TRINITY SUMMER FESTIVAL!

Sunday, August 30 from 10 AM to 3 PM at Trinity Cathedral

Activities will include food (BBQ, solar cooking & pies), DUNK THE DEAN, garden activities, sidewalk chalk art, music, and time to sit down with friends and neighbors to chat. And that's not all! We are recruiting cooks and judges for a CHILI COOK OFF and are planning a good ole CAKE WALK. This may be better than the State Fair (even if we don't have bacon wrapped corn on the cob)! Plan to come. Look for more information next week.

Trinity Cathedral Speaker Series

The next speaker in our Speaker Series is Dewitt Jones on Friday, October 2nd at 7pm.  He was a National Geographic photographer for 20 years and he will share his photos and insights that he learned in his photography career.  The title of his talk is "Celebrate What's Right with the World."  It's a phenomenal presentation and not to be missed!

August 12   Vision: From the Life of Hildegard von Bingen

(Rated G and Subtitled)

An abbess, visionary, naturalist and composer, Hildegard is a memorable mystic of the Middle Ages.  Her legacy comprises radiant accounts of religious experience, yet her faith-filled visions were questioned. Despite living in an era in which women were proscribed from preaching and interpreting scripture, Hildegard believes that she must reveal the visions she experienced as a gift from God.  A stirring and beautiful film.
