"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

July has been extremely intense for me both professionally and personally and it is so good to be home and back at Trinity Cathedral.  I have already written about my experience at General Convention as the chair of the committee that handled the marriage resolutions.  That professionally rewarding experience was followed by a trip to West Point where we dropped Mark off for the basic training phase of his year at the West Point Prep School.  Andrea and I are proud of our son and looking forward to hearing stories about his experience.  At the end of their first day of training, they marched on the football field for a ceremony where

On the right is Cadet Candidate Mark Baker.

they recited their oath.  I was able to sneak this photo of him.  We flew from West Point to Hawaii where Andrea and I officiated at the wedding of our best friend from our time at West Point.  The Wedding was at St. Andrew's Cathedral, where Susan is serving as the Canon Pastor.  I was confirmed at St. Andrew's Cathedral by Bishop Browning when I was in my early 20's.

This trip reminded me of how our lives and stories intertwine.  It was great to have these events that connect with our past.  At the same time, I am so happy to be back home, and back at Trinity Cathedral where Andrea and I will live into our new lives as empty-nesters.

Stephen Ministry at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral is a program of caring. Stephen Ministers are trained to give one-on-one care to someone who is experiencing a life-changing event: grief, illness, job loss, divorce, a new baby in the family, loss of a loved one, a difficult move, an ailing family member.

We are trained for 50 hours, then commissioned to serve in this ministry for at least two years. In addition to Continuing Education, we also receive support from our peers as we meet with our care receivers.

As Stephen Ministers, we do not: fix anyone; suggest solutions; give pep talks or direction; go shopping; help around the house; express any kind of judgment. We are not therapists or part of a medical team, although we may meet with someone who is experiencing this kind of support.

We do: show up, listen, pray and listen some more . . . week after week, sometimes more than once a week, for about an hour.

Our ministry is simple, effective and dynamic, changing with the occurrences of life, meeting needs as they evolve and change with each situation.

Our next training class begins October 5th.  For information, contact Cherie Chamness in the bookshop, call 916-442-9194 or email Susan Wilson at snbwilson@gmail.com

SAFE GROUND
NEEDS YOUR HELP!

Are you an amateur (or professional) chef, who likes to cook for others?  Do you have good organizational skills, and enjoy helping to guide others in the kitchen?  Trinity Cathedral's Outreach Ministries need your help!

We don't have enough "Chefs / Dinner Captains" to meet our commitment to the homeless community through Safe Ground next month.  If you feel called to serve our community through this ministry, we would love to hear from you!  The volunteer time commitment for our Captains / Chefs is only once per month - cooking and leading Trinity's kitchen on a Wednesday afternoon from about 2pm - 7pm.  We would prefer that Chefs are able to make a commitment to Safe Ground for at least 6 months - which is just 6 dinner services!

If this ministry appeals to you or someone you know, please contact Michael Donnoe, Trinity Cathedral's coordinator for the Safe Ground Pilgrimage ministry.  He may be reached via cell at (916) 992-3196, or email at mdonnoe@gmail.com.

School News

Summer is well underway and the start of school is just around the corner. The ads for Back to School have started.
So with that in mind I asked principal Eric Chapman what items are needed most for school at Floyd.

The students need the following:

* Spiral bound note books or journals wide ruled and college ruled

* #2 pencils

* Crayons

Gently used Children's clothing for infants up to sixth grade is needed for both boys and girls.  Underwear and socks for all ages is needed especially boys size 6 to 8.  We will be having a back to school Clothes Closet before school starts on September 1 and we would like to be well stocked.

Please bring clothing or school supplies to the barrels on the second floor above the office and we will see that they get to the school.

Thank you for your help.

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.  Learn to just be...in the midst of God's love. All are welcome.

We are both grateful for our church family and know we can count on your prayers, which are deeply felt and appreciated.

Sir Michael Tippett

Some consider Sir Michael Tippett the equal of Benjamin Britten. Maybe you've wondered who Sir Michael was. Here is what Clive Paget, writing in Limelight, Australia's Classical Music and Arts Magazine had to say.

"Out and proud? You betcha! One of the few twentieth century composers who examined and discussed his own sexuality, Sir Michael Tippett was a brave light in a period of relative darkness. Unlike the tightlipped Benjamin Britten, he was out there almost waving the rainbow flag. Not that he had it easy: "Being unable to enter into a biological relationship with a woman, it seemed that I was excluded from an understanding of half the human race", he wrote. His relationship with Wilfred Franks, a young painter, produced, in his own words "the deepest, most shattering experience of falling in love", and was "a major factor underlying the discovery of my own individual musical 'voice'." The first composer to seriously portray gay characters in his operas, and to explore the possibilities of bisexuality, Tippett was a true pioneer."

Please join us in the Assembly Area at 7 pm on Thursday August 13 to hear about Sir Michael's music and his life. We will listen to and focus on "A Child of Our Time," one of his best known works.            ~~Loren Weatherly

Our guest speaker at the Veterans Day Celebration will be Chaplain (Captain) Andrea Baker, US Army Reserve, and service dog Zac. She will have a slide show about her deployment to Afghanistan. We have also confirmed the Patriot Guard Riders for our flag line to honor our veterans.

We are going to be inviting the entire Diocese, veterans and their families to join our celebration.

What we are working on right now is getting a Color Guard secured and a sponsor for the BBQ. Candace and Doss Miller will be having their display table so if you have any memorabilia please let them know.

Old Testament

Meets in Room A at 10:15am

"For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." (Eccles 3:1-8) and, as I'm sure the writer meant to say... A time for teaching and a time for learning.

This week in the Introduction to the Old Testament we will look at the "Writings." These include Ecclesiastes, crazy Daniel and some of those books that are in the Catholic Bible but not in the Protestant Bible. Have you ever wondered about what is the difference and why? Come and get some answers today at 10:15 in Room A.

This is an introductory course; no knowledge of the Bible is required; just bring one.

(behind the church next to the parking lot).

You are invited to bring your dinner, or help yourself to popcorn and beverages, and to be ready for stimulating post-film discussions.

Christianity has a rich mystical tradition that reaches back to New Testament times and remains surprisingly relevant today.  It is not an exclusive realm for the very holy, but what the Christian life is about for all of us.  This series of award-winning films recognizes the presence of mystics living among us and how the impact our world.

August 5   The Fisher King (Rated R)

Robin Williams is Perry, a homeless history professor who lives in a magical world full of castles, Red Knights and damsels distress.  Jeff Bridges is New York's #1 shock DJ whose arrogance triggers a tragedy which ruins his career.  Jack finds himself plucked from disaster by the most improbable of saviors--Perry.  This film portrays a modern quest for redemption and the mystical Holy Grail, with humor, heartbreak and courage.
