As I write this it is Wednesday evening. The Episcopal Church is in session at General Convention and marriage - what it really means and who can be married in the church - is a hot topic, and the Supreme Court of the United States is about to release their historic ruling on whether or not same gender couples can marry under The Constitution. As Episcopalians we have long been proud of our connection to the founding of this great country of ours, and so it is indeed ironic that these two great institutions - one ordained by God and one by the Declaration of Independence - are about to make history on the same issue, and at virtually the same time. And so I ask you, do you think God is saying something here? Well, as a Deacon of the church and a Gay man, I believe the answer is a rousing 'Yes!'

 

We hold dual citizenship: We are both citizens of The Kingdom and of The United States. Both citizenships have great responsibilities, both have times of great pain and sorrow, and both have times of great joy. I've always believed that the words of the Declaration were God given:

We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.

 

Our problems have always been in the difficulty of living up to our baptismal vows and the words that Thomas Jefferson so eloquently wrote. I am also aware that not all people are of the same mind when it comes to agreeing on any issue. However I can only speak with the voice that my life experiences have given me, I have no other voice. Likewise, The Episcopal Church and the Supreme Court also speak from their life experiences. TEC tries to discern the will of God and the Court tries to discern the meaning of the words of Thomas Jefferson. But I've got to tell you that I believe The Church has an edge, because it's got Jesus. Yes, he often spoke in parables - which drove the disciples nuts - but he was also very clear when he gave The Great Commandment, "Love one another as I have loved you."

 

No matter what the Supreme Court rules, no matter what actions General Convention takes, I'll follow Jesus. And I'll be singing along with The Beatles, "All you need is love." I wonder where they got THAT idea?

Performer: Doug Smith, is a Grammy award winning acoustic guitarist and finger style champion. His  music combines folk, classical and jazz elements and has been called a cross between Chet Atkins, Leo Kottke and Michael Hedges.  His program is suitable for all ages.

Tickets: adults $20, children  ages 8-16 $10, under 8 free, family package adult and children $60. 

 

Tickets will be available in the Great Hall after the 9:00 service at the Camp Noel Porter table.

Centering Prayer is a method of meditation that helps quiet the mind and participate in God's presence. It is a receptive form of prayer - a kind of resting in God.

Walk for a JUST Affordable Housing Ordinance

Join the faith community and other low-income housing advocates in walking to City Hall to take a stand for a JUST Affordable Housing Ordinance to create desperately-needed housing for low-income individuals and families, seniors and the disabled. Meet in front of Trinity at 4:30pm to walk, or at City Hall at 9th & I Streets by 5:30 pm to attend the hearing before city council. Introduction to the

Old Testament

 

Meets at 10:15am in Room A

 

 

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. These are the scriptures Jesus was always quoting.  NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED OR ASSUMED. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the Old Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the Law (1st 5 Books of the Hebrew Scriptures); the Prophets (there are more than Isaiah & Jeremiah) - these are the 2 parts Jesus often refers to when he refers to "the Scriptures say..."; or "according to the Law and the Prophets" And we will spend time on the historical books and the "Writings." Come and check it out! The class is in Room A after the 9:00 service and runs until 11:05...leaving time to attend the 11:15 service. Required text: The Bible; Recommended text: Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.)

 

Jerry Paré will teach this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California and knows how to make those dry bones talk!

Thanksgiving for the LGBT Community and Solidarity for Equal Rights

The United States Supreme Court will soon announce a landmark ruling regarding marriage equality and most specifically the rights of lesbian and gay couples to marry in all fifty states. This ruling will be announced during the month of June.

 

Trinity Cathedral is working with a coalition of faith community members to actively support our LGBT sisters and brothers with participation in two events.

July 23 -- The Art of Life presented by Kiho Cho, D.V.M., Ph.D. Cho brings a unique blend of science and art as he shares a gallery of images discovered as part of his scientific studies.

 

July 30 -- Ray Leonardini is the Director of Prison Contemplative Fellowship, an association of current and former prison inmates, chaplains, and volunteers committed to sharing the practice of centering prayer with the prison population.

 

August 6 -- Robert L. Litchfield, Jr., is both an author and an advocate for the homeless in Auburn, CA, having written Until they have faces: 110 interviews with the homeless people of Auburn, California, which he is selling as a fundraiser for homeless services in his town.

 

August 13 -- Facilitated by Loren Weatherly.

Sir Michael Tippett was an adventurous composer - some of his symphonies are haunting and some are beautiful and some are obscure and derivative.  

On Sunday, July 12, 12:30-2:00pm in the Bookshop, the Rev. Diana Turner will present a line of natural products that will improve your life inside and out.
