"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

In the coming days, Dean Baker and I will leave for Salt Lake City Utah to attend the General Convention as Deputies from the Diocese of Northern California. Perhaps you have been following the issues that will come before the Convention for months. Or perhaps you have never even heard of General Convention. Either way, I believe this is an excellent opportunity to follow big movement and changes in the wider Episcopal Church.

General Convention convenes as a whole every three years. This will be my fifth General Convention. I started as a teenager as a member of the Official Youth Presence, representing Province 8. 18 young people are elected each Convention to advocate for issues using their seat and voice on the floor of the House of Deputies. Being a part of this presence not only gave me the knowledge and tools to navigate the complex legislative process, it also deepened my love for our Church and the collective power of community acting together. The same excellent training I received then is now available to everyone through the internet.

For a crash course in legislative process and key issues coming before this General Convention, I highly recommend watching the orientation videos at http://www.generalconvention.org/r/gc-orientation.

In addition to the many Marriage resolutions that the Dean has discussed previously, here are a few issues that I am especially interested in:

  1. Mission and Evangelism: Last Convention, the Standing Commission that I served on wrote a resolution to foster new church community start-ups that nature creative ministry and reaching out into the community. This funding helped to launch the communities featured over on this blog: http://www.acts8moment.org/category/stories/mission-enterprise-zone/. This Convention, Resolution A085 asks for the continuation of these grants in total of 5 million dollars over the next three years.

  2. The Election of the next Presiding Bishop: A new Presiding Bishop is elected every 9 years (unless the current office holder runs for re-election). This Convention, the Nominating Committee put forth a slate of 4 candidates. You can research them and watch their statements over at http://www.generalconvention.org/pbelect.
  3.

  4. Issues coming before the Social Justice and International Policy Legislative Committee: Especially after participating in the Bishop's Holy Land pilgrimage last year, I am eager to follow resolutions supporting justice and peace in Israel-Palestine.

Stay up to date on everything General Convention with these links:

I will miss you all over the next two weeks. I ask for your prayers, and I will keep you in mine.

Peace,

Megan +

Trinity Cathedral Welcomes
Elica Health Centers
to Safe Ground Pilgrimage

by Deacon Steve

Last Wednesday, June 10th, Elica Health Centers brought their mobile van to the cathedral for the first time.   Elica had visited once before, but the van was not available on that night, so this was its official debut.  Dave Coburn of Safe Ground has arranged for Elica to be present at all future Safe Ground Pilgrimage nights at the cathedral.

Elica Health Care Centers is a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) which provides comprehensive primary care and preventative care services to persons of all ages, regardless of their ability to pay. They use a sliding scale based on patients' family size and income which is available to eligible patients for many of their services.

Elica is open to all, and that includes members of the cathedral.  In addition to the mobile service unit, there are two clinics:

  •  3701 J Street, Sacramento (454-2345)
  •  155 15th Street, West Sacramento (375-8981)

Introduction to the

Old Testament

Meets at 10:15am in Room A

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. These are the scriptures Jesus was always quoting.  NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED OR ASSUMED. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the Old Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the Law (1st 5 Books of the Hebrew Scriptures); the Prophets (there are more than Isaiah & Jeremiah) - these are the 2 parts Jesus often refers to when he refers to "the Scriptures say..."; or "according to the Law and the Prophets" And we will spend time on the historical books and the "Writings." Come and check it out! The class is in Room A after the 9:00 service and runs until 11:05...leaving time to attend the 11:15 service. Required text: The Bible; Recommended text: Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.)

Jerry Paré will teach this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California and knows how to make those dry bones talk!
