If you were in church at 11:15am last Sunday you might have noticed a telltale sign that summer is approaching: the choir was not vested. For the summer months, the choir is more casual in their attire and they do not have evening rehearsals. If you enjoy singing, summer is a good time to try out being in the choir. The Celebration Choir meets in the Assembly Area at 8:20am to prepare for the 9:00am service. The Cathedral Choir meets in the Cathedral at 10:40am for the 11:15am service. If you want to sing in the choir, just show up for the morning rehearsal - no audition or sign-up is required.

There are other summer changes. The Lunch Bunch and Thursday Night at The Cathedral dinner and classes are taking a break until July 9. The 30/40's group will not be meeting over the summer. We have a Vacation Bible School next week and a Women's Retreat this weekend. On Sunday mornings at 10:15am we have an Introduction to the Old Testament Class as well as our Newcomers Group.

We have had some excellent guests preaching the last couple of weeks. If you were away, you can watch them online. Bishop Beisner preached about the Trinity and The Rev. Jesse Vaughan preached last weekend.  I will be preaching the next two Sundays, and then I will be General Convention from June 22 to July 4.

I pray you have a blessed Summer.

Family Promise

Family Promise

Family Promise

Returns to Trinity

June 21-27

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, June 21, and will again be staying in the Great Hall for a week. We need folks to provide a dinner each evening; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. If you like, you can drop off an entree for dinner before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but many are not and need some clues.) Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

In addition, we are planning a special Father's Day barbecue for the families on the 21st. We'd love to have a couple of people who love to grill help us. We will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs and possibly chicken as a lighter alternative. (Some of the family members are on medically restricted diets; the coordinators will have more information on the families' needs the week before we host.) If you'd like to donate time, food, or equipment to our party, please contact Eleanor.

Family Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.

Education for Ministry (EfM)

EfM Scholarship Fund

Education for Ministry is a four year program to deepen the faith and develop the understanding of ministry of participants. Many of the lay leaders of Trinity Cathedral have participated in this valuable program. For some Trinity members the $350 annual cost of EfM is a barrier to joining. If you are able, please donate to the EfM scholarship fund to enable those who can't afford EfM to take part. Any amount will help. To donate, write a check to Trinity Cathedral, with "EfM scholarship" in the memo line. The deadline for signing up for EfM is June 14th, so donations need to be made as soon as possible. If you're interested in participating in EfM, contact Loren Weatherly at (916) 715-1501.

Canon Link Anniversary Celebration
and Sabbatical

Canon Link's Anniversary Celebration

(L to R) David, Joann, Justine, Abagail, Carol (Mom) and Nancy (Sister)

I wish to extend my sincerest thanks to everyone who attended the celebration of my thirty years of ministry at Trinity Cathedral. It was truly a blessing to have all of you there with my family, to celebrate this big milestone in my life. I have now figured out that I have spent half of my life at Trinity Cathedral!

I would especially like to thank the members of the choirs for all of they work put into making the evening special. And more specifically, the planning committee of Ric Burwell, Mary Smith, and Chris Miller, along with Kami Davis, Rick Kenealey, and Abagail Link, who shared musical leadership.

Some of you have asked why I have not gone on sabbatical yet! My sabbatical starts in two more weeks on June 22nd, and finished up on Monday, August 31st. During my absence, musical duties will be taken by Nancy Metzger, a regular substitute when I am gone.

I am still working on specific plans for my sabbatical. But I am planning to relax, get lots of exercise, spend time away with my family, and finish up with a big backpacking trip around Mount Rainier!

Again, thanks to all of you for your support!

All are invited to be with us especially Newcomers and visitors. If you have questions contact Randie Strike at email randie.trinity@gmail.com or 916-446-2513.

30/40s and Beyond

The group will be taking a break for the summer starting this Sunday.  My son has a championship baseball game this Sunday morning (does anyone go to church anymore? I get so tired of being the lone sports mom who speaks up for not wanting any games on Sunday mornings) and our group has dwindled these past few weeks.  So we will break early and return back to meeting in mid September when Sunday School starts up again.

ALL ages welcome! Contact: Amy Dierlam at dnarock@pacbell.net

Introduction to the

Old Testament

Are you smarter than

our 5th graders?

Meets at 10:15am in Room A

Are you smarter than a 5th Grader? Fifth graders at Trinity spend the entire academic year studying the Bible. If you think they might now have one up on you, then attend the course, Introduction to the Old Testament in Room A after the 9:00 service. Don't feel you have to attend all classes. Please bring a Bible. Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners is recommended but not required. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.) NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED. After all, our 5th graders didn't know that much about it before their 5th grade year. But now they know there are 2, count them 2 creation stories! They know that the Prophet Ezekiel was a wild and crazy guy! (Who else would have visions of dry bones rising up to be the nation of Israel?) They know that the Song of Solomon is a beautiful love song (or maybe they didn't get that far.)

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. These are the scriptures Jesus was always quoting. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the Old Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the Law (1st 5 Books of the Hebrew Scriptures); the Prophets (there are more than Isaiah & Jeremiah) - these are the 2 parts Jesus often refers to when he refers to "the Scriptures say..."; or "according to the Law and the Prophets" And we will spend time on the historical books and the "Writings." Come and check it out!

Jerry Paré will teach this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California and knows how to make those dry bones talk! Jerry long ago realized that, like the Prophet Jeremiah, God seduced him, and he let himself be seduced (Jer 20:7) Woo!!

Thanksgiving for the LGBT Community and Solidarity for Equal Rights

The United States Supreme Court will soon announce a landmark ruling regarding marriage equality and most specifically the rights of lesbian and gay couples to marry in all fifty states. This ruling will be announced during the month of June.

Trinity Cathedral is working with a coalition of faith community members to actively support our LGBT sisters and brothers with participation in two events.

TREE Tip...

TREE Logo Money, Action, and Coffee.

 by Ann Rothschild

Money: Thank you to those who have donated to TREE in the past, and who have participated in our Christmas Fairs and paid table fees and profit percentages. You may wonder where all this money goes. Well, we pay membership to California Interfaith Power and Light which supports and encourages communities of all faiths to cut down on energy use and innovate with renewable energy.   We buy tomato plants to give away at Earth Day, plates made of recycled paper for picnics, and we plan to support environmental changes at Trinity - like well marked recycle bins... and maybe a water-wise demonstration garden to replace a piece of lawn outside the bookshop.

Actions: Please walk past the bulletin board in the corridor between the Great Hall and the Bookshop. You may see some familiar faces on TREE's space doing good things for the environment...do you have photos of your efforts?   Please email your photos to Deacon Tina Campbell ( tinarcampbell@comcast.net ), and we will print and display them to encourage others in their daily efforts.

Coffee:   Cups, that is.   Bring your own coffee cup to coffee hour and cut down on the waste of paper cups.   Show us your cup at the TREE Second Harvest Table, and we will give you a name tag and raffle ticket good for a delightful prize. One ticket per person. Drawings to be held on the 4th Sunday of Even Months and our first drawing will be in June.
