"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Last week I wrote about the importance of sharing our gospel of God's love to those who are spiritually hungry outside the church.  I have not been thinking about this in isolation.  An increasing number of people in the Episcopal Church have been exploring ways for us, as the church, to look more like Jesus as he loves the world into wholeness.  There is a group of people, including our own bishop, who are urging the upcoming General Convention to make changes that will help the church change its focus.  They wrote a memorial, which is a letter to the Convention, as well as proposed resolutions.  You can read the memorial here.  If you are interested in the resolutions, select the "resolutions" tab at the top of the memorial webpage.  The second bulleted item in the memorial particularly caught my attention.  It calls us to "Share the Good News of Jesus Christ in word and deed, including learning how to tell the story of how Jesus makes a difference in our lives, even and especially to those who have not experienced true transformation."

At the upcoming General Convention, I believe there will be three areas of significant importance: the election of the Presiding Bishop, consideration of changing our canons and liturgy to include same-sex marriage, and resolutions on restructuring the church so it is more outwardly focused.  The resolutions on this memorial website are geared toward the third area.  I think we are in for an exciting Convention and we at Trinity Cathedral have the good fortune of having two clergy, myself and Megan, as part of the Northern California deputation.  We will be letting you know how you can stay abreast of Convention news.

Family Promise

Family Promise

Family Promise

Returns to Trinity

June 21-27

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, June 21, and will again be staying in the Great Hall for a week. We need folks to provide a dinner each evening; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. If you like, you can drop off an entree for dinner before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but many are not and need some clues.) Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

In addition, we are planning a special Father's Day barbecue for the families on the 21st. We'd love to have a couple of people who love to grill help us. We will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs and possibly chicken as a lighter alternative. (Some of the family members are on medically restricted diets; the coordinators will have more information on the families' needs the week before we host.) If you'd like to donate time, food, or equipment to our party, please contact Eleanor.

Family Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.

Education for Ministry (EfM)

EfM

Education for Ministry

Ever wanted to get a better understanding of the Bible and what its ancient stories may mean to you?  Or learn more about the history of the Christian church and the origins of its varied traditions and movements?  Or sort out your own theology or calling to serve in the world?   In my three years (so far), I've found the Education for Ministry (EfM) program does all that and more in a supportive (and exam-free!) small group learning environment, facilitated by EfM grads trained to mentor.

Trinity's EfM group currently has room for a few new (or returning) students, so if you're interested, talk to any of us wearing "Ask me about EfM" buttons, or email either of our current mentors--Carol Savoie at 1mecanuk@gmail.com or Loren Weatherly at loren.weatherly@gmail.com for more information.  Registration for next year's course (beginning Sunday afternoons in September) is open now through June 21.  The course fee is just $350 per academic year (including textbooks and materials), and some scholarship funds are available.

If you're looking for a solid next step in your lifelong learning adventure, check out EfM!

Georgianna Pfost

EfM Scholarship Fund

Education for Ministry is a four year program to deepen the faith and develop the understanding of ministry of participants. Many of the lay leaders of Trinity Cathedral have participated in this valuable program. For some Trinity members the $350 annual cost of EfM is a barrier to joining. If you are able, please donate to the EfM scholarship fund to enable those who can't afford EfM to take part. Any amount will help. To donate, write a check to Trinity Cathedral, with "EfM scholarship" in the memo line. The deadline for signing up for EfM is June 14th, so donations need to be made as soon as possible. If you're interested in participating in EfM, contact Loren Weatherly at (916) 715-1501.

Happy Birthday AA!

This year, Alcoholics Anonymous celebrates its 85th Anniversary.  On a trip to Akron, Ohio, a stockbroker known as Bill W. met Dr. Bob.  Both were considered "hopeless alcoholics". Bill W. had "lost everything", was trying to start over in his profession and had just recently stopped drinking (again). Dr. Bob was active in his addiction often walking into surgery drunk or hungover. Dr. Bob was convinced that his family and friends had sent Bill W. to get him to stop drinking.  Bill W. was actually there to bolster his own sobriety. He believed that talking to another alcoholic would help him stay sober. On June 10, 1935, Dr. Bob stopped drinking.  The two had an earthshaking idea - form a fellowship of alcoholics supporting and helping each other.

Alcoholics Anonymous was born. They were only two people, but their idea grew and has saved the lives of millions all over the world. Today, the AA program continues to offer hope and healing and is a model for numerous groups dealing with other addictions. Many consider Bill W. and Dr. Bob modern day "saints" who have done more to ease human suffering than all the Nobel Laureates, clergy, medical researchers, national leaders, social advocates, etc. combined.  Dr. Bob died in 1950 and Bill W. in 1971, but their legacy continues to touch the lives of millions.

Trinity Cathedral proud to welcome several "12 Step" groups meeting on a regular basis throughout the week. Last year, we held our first Recovery Sunday celebration. It was a wonderfully inspiring day! We are grateful to the Rev. Anne McKeever, for her leadership and guidance in beginning what we hope will be an annual event. Watch for announcements regarding our second Recovery Sunday to be held in September, National Recovery Month.

Growing in Faith:

Introduction to the Old Testament

Begins Sunday, June 7 at 10:15am in Room A

"Growing in Faith" has two components in its part of Adult Spiritual Formation. The first is what we have experienced from January thru this past Sunday; from members of the parish being involved in formative preparation for baptism, confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church or formal renewal of their faith. The other is a series of introductory classes: "Introduction to the Old Testament," Introduction to the New Testament," Introduction to Worship and Prayer," and "Introduction to the Church." Everyone is welcome to participate in these classes. IF YOU WANT TO PREPARE FOR BAPTISM OR CONFIRMATION, they are strongly recommended.

This Sunday we begin INTRODUCTION TO THE OLD TESTAMENT. It will run from June 7 - August 16 in Room A after the 9:00 service. Don't feel you have to attend all classes. Please bring a Bible. (Early on we will talk about recommended translations.) Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners is recommended but not required. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.) NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED.

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. These are the scriptures Jesus was always quoting. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the Old Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the Law (1st 5 Books of the Hebrew Scriptures); the Prophets (there are more than Isaiah & Jeremiah) - these are the 2 parts Jesus often refers to when he refers to "the Scriptures say..."; or "according to the Law and the Prophets" And we will spend time on the historical books and the "Writings." Come and check it out!

Jerry Paré will teach this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California and loves to dig into the Scriptures.
