"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Why do you come to church?  What specifically about Jesus and Christianity has impacted you as good news?  For you, what is the "gospel?"
I ask these questions in the face of a recent Pew Research Center study that shows a rapid increase in the number of people who are religiously unaffiliated - called the "nones," for "no religious affiliation," in the study.

I believe the lack of affiliation is not due to a lack of spiritual hunger.  I just returned from speaking at the Sun Valley Wellness Festival where there were four days of talks from a wide variety of spiritual teachers and booths selling crystals, angel figurines and healing lotions.  Several of the events were sold out and tickets were not inexpensive.  It was clear by the people attending this festival that people are searching.  Incidentally I had the opportunity to share my perspective on Jesus' teachings to this "spiritual but not religious" crowd.  I am guessing it was the first time a Christian clergy-person was invited to teach about Jesus at such a festival.

One reason people have stopped attending church is because some churches stopped embodying the compassionate love of Jesus.  But if we want to be relevant again, and if we really want to be the Body of Christ, we need to be more than places of inclusion and compassionate service.  We need to articulate our gospel. We need to be able to articulate why someone should follow Jesus.  For many of us, we have been so afraid to be considered narrow or judgmental that not only did we stop articulating why Jesus was important to us, we may have even forgot ourselves.

Why do you come to church?  For you, what is the gospel?  For me, I am more human, more alive, more connected to God and others because I chose to follow Jesus, and because I am part of a worshiping, loving community.  For me to explain what it is about Jesus that makes this so requires a longer conversation - a conversation that I am eager to have with anybody willing to listen.  But it has taken me years of pondering to be able to articulate my understanding of the gospel.

I think if we are going to sate the spiritual hunger that is around us, we need to be better at this articulation.  We need to embody the gospel in the quality of our community, but we also need to be willing to speak about our faith in ways that are not usually easy for us.   I would like us, as a Cathedral, to learn how to better understand our faith, and share that faith with others.  People are hungry, and we have good food to share.

Sleeping Beauty is getting its final magical touches and will be presented on Thursday, June 4 at 6:00 pm and again on Friday at 1:30 pm.

All  are welcome. There is no charge to view the first school play ever at Leataata Floyd School, 401 McClatchy Way, Sacramento, 95818, basically beyond at 5th and Broadway.

We are still looking for a video photographer for Thursday night and a sound person. If you can help please contact Nancy Tennyson (916-481-3546).

There are so many people who have helped with the production and we are ever so grateful to you all.

The Library still needs many books. The school is focusing on science: pollinators, native plants, homes for bees and butterflies. If you find appropriate books on these subjects for children that would be wonderful.  We also need children's fiction, poetry, drama or other topics of interest for kindergarten to sixth grade. We have book plates that can be put in the books and then given to the school.

Blessings,

Family Promise

Family Promise

Family Promise

Returns to Trinity

June 21-27

Our Family Promise families return to the Cathedral on Sunday, June 21, and will again be staying in the Great Hall for a week. We need folks to provide a dinner each evening; evening hosts who can serve, clean up, and make sure the families' needs are provided for; and overnight hosts who ensure their security and comfort while they spend the night in the Great Hall. If you like, you can drop off an entree for dinner before 5:30 p.m. and we will prepare it for you. (Please make sure you leave instructions if you go this route! Some us are experienced cooks, but many are not and need some clues.) Please sign up on the Family Promise poster in the office hallway, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295.

In addition, we are planning a special Father's Day barbecue for the families on the 21st. We need a barbecue grill, and if possible, a person who loves to grill. We will be serving hamburgers and hot dogs and possibly chicken as a lighter alternative. (Some of the family members are on medically restricted diets; the coordinators will have more information on the families' needs the week before we host.) If you'd like to donate time, food, or equipment to our party, please contact Eleanor.

Family Promise is a national organization which transitions homeless families into stable homes and employment. The Sacramento center has been the most successful in the network, with 30 families placed into housing and jobs last year. For more information, please ask the office for our Family Promise FAQ, or ask Eleanor to email an electronic copy of the booklet to you.

Education for Ministry (EfM)

EfM

Trinity Cathedral's Education for Ministry (EfM) participants are members of a vibrant and supportive small group devoted to studying, experiencing, discussing, and learning. At the completion of EfM's four year program, participants can expect to have a better understanding of their personal theology and the work they are called to do in the world.

Six members of Trinity Cathedral's EfM Group are continuing in September; two will enter year two, one will enter year three, and three will enter year four. The group meets at Trinity Cathedral on Sunday afternoon between 1 pm and 3:30 pm. $350 per year covers course materials such as textbooks and resource guides; scholarship funds may be available. All are welcome: new EfM participants, EfM participants who would like to continue their studies, and EfM participants who have graduated and would like to enroll in a year they choose. Participants may register beginning immediately and continuing until June 21. Our first class meeting will be Sunday, September 13.

"Exploring and Developing a Mature Faith" is the focus for the class beginning this fall. In Efm, we welcome you as you are on your faith journey, to  explore with us questions and longings that call you to connect to God and serve others with your unique gifts. Through study, reflection and connection, we support each other in deepening our understanding, encouraging and empowering each other along the way. For more information about EfM, talk to someone wearing an "Ask me about Education for Ministry" button, or go to the website www.efm.sewanee.edu, or contact EfM Mentors Carol Savoie 1mecanuk@gmail.com or Loren Weatherly loren.weatherly@gmail.com.

Small Group

Radical Inclusion small group discussion - After hearing Yvette Flunder speak on this subject, come and participate in a small group discussion about Creating, Sustaining, Celebrating and Preaching to Community. Facilitator is Pamela Anderson.

Classes

  • Facilitator - Vaughn Wolff: Finding Faith Hope and Love. This will be an exercise in listening and sharing our stories with an emphasis on spiritual awareness and the evidence of God working in us, in our environments and in the world. Learning how to be at Peace in spite of Adversity is the demonstration of spirit. Coming to a place of confidence that everything matters to God where we find Good in everything we see, hear, touch, feel, know and think, is the homecoming we all seek; and then we are equipped with the Light of Christ to walk back down into the dark places to bring the Light of Faith Hope and Love to those who are weary with the heaviness of a troubled life.

  • Facilitator - Susan Hotchkiss: Holy Women, Holy Men Celebrating the Saints.  This wonderful resource contains lives of men and women who have served God and humanity from ancient history to more current times.  We will discuss the make up of the book and delve into the historic context that put these people in the places and times God needed them to be.

Clergy: Rev. Lynell Walker
Lay Leader: Elba White

All who are interested in  healing ministry are invited and heartily encouraged to come and participate in this workshop based on Biblical truths.  I first experienced this approach to healing when I attended a 1 hour workshop at an International Conference of the Order of St. Luke the Physician perhaps 10 years ago in Texas.  I followed the leader's directions and God honored our efforts.  The results have been incorporated into my prayers since then, but I find it helpful to review and practice.  So this workshop will present information on the spine and the physical effects of injury and deterioration, allow time for practice and prayers by all participants, and led by our clergy have a time for worship.

Call Elba White at 916-684-4015 for more information.

Growing in Faith:

The End and Beginning of a Journey

January 2015 Rite of Commitment

This Sunday we celebrate the Affirmation of Vocation for those who have journeyed together this year in Growing in Faith. The rite is simple: Those declaring their vocation with their sponsors come up to the front of the church near the end of the Mass. The Dean prays over them. Their sponsors and they declare how they are called to serve, and they go out with the rest of us to do just that. They "go forth to love and serve the Lord!" as the Deacon proclaims.

Why this pageantry? The rites we celebrate with the catechumenate or "Growing in Faith," -- the Rite of Commitment in January; the Rite of Enrollment at the beginning of Lent; baptisms, confirmations, receptions and affirmations at the Easter Vigil; the Affirmation of Vocation this Sunday - help the candidates, sponsors and all of us mark significant moments in our faith journeys. We remember and renew our commitment to Christ and the Church. We remember and renew our baptism and confirmation. We remember and renew our sense of call and our response.

We will begin the journey again this next Advent with a new group of adults and sponsors seeking baptism, confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church or formal Renewal of Faith. Please consider joining us. Take some time to consider how you want to celebrate your journey of faith at this time. If that may be through the group discussions and rites of the catechumenate, then come on Sunday afternoons from 3 - 5 PM, starting in December.

Thanksgiving for the LGBT Community

and Solidarity for Equal Rights

The United States Supreme Court will soon announce a landmark ruling regarding marriage equality and most specifically the rights of lesbian and gay couples to marry in all fifty states. This ruling will be announced during the month of June.

Trinity Cathedral is working with a coalition of faith community members to actively support our LGBT sisters and brothers with participation in two events:

  1. On the day the ruling is announced there will be a rally on the steps of the Capitol building at 6:00 pm.   Please join us to ensure that the Sacramento faith community is represented! We expect a large crowd. I will announce from the podium a Service of Thanksgiving which will take place the following Sunday. We will also be distributing flyers of invitation.
  2. On the Sunday following the ruling a multi-faith Service of Thanksgiving will be held at 3:00 pm. Regardless of the decision, "win or lose", the tone of the service will be one of thanksgiving. We are thankful for God's wonderfully diverse creation. We are thankful for God's presence in our lives. We are thankful to be blessed with the knowledge that the Holy Spirit will continue moving to bring justice and peace to our world. The service will be held at Congregation B'nai Israel on Riverside Blvd unless the ruling is announced the last week of June making the service day fall on the last Sunday, June 28th. In that case, the service will be held at Pioneer Congregational United Church of Christ on 27th and L Streets.

More information on both events will be announced as it becomes available.

I do hope that you will take these opportunities to join with others to show God's love as we stand together in thanksgiving and solidarity with the LGBT community and all people of conscience.

You are invited to a special prayer service uniting the faith community at Loaves & Fishes. Introduction to the Old Testament

Are you smarter than a 5th Grader? Fifth graders at Trinity spend the entire academic year studying the Bible. If you think they might now have one up on you, then attend the course, Introduction to the Old Testament from June 7 - August 16 in Room A after the 9:00 service. Don't feel you have to attend all classes. Please bring a Bible. (Early on we will talk about recommended translations.) Donald Grigg's The Bible from Scratch: The Old Testament for Beginners is recommended but not required. (Copies are available in the Bookshop.) NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE BIBLE IS REQUIRED. After all, our 5th graders didn't know that much about it before their 5th grade year. But now they know there are 2, count them 2 creation stories! They know that the Prophet Ezekiel was a wild and crazy guy! (Who else would have visions of dry bones rising up to be the nation of Israel?) They know that the Song of Solomon is a beautiful love song (or maybe they didn't get that far.)

This course is meant to provide a basic understanding of the Old Testament or Hebrew Scriptures. These are the scriptures Jesus was always quoting. We will start with the basics: What is the Bible? Where is the Old Testament located in the Bible? What is a "good" translation? What makes it "good"? and move on to study the Law (1st 5 Books of the Hebrew Scriptures); the Prophets (there are more than Isaiah & Jeremiah) -these are the 2 parts Jesus often refers to when he refers to "the Scriptures say..."; or "according to the Law and the Prophets" And we will spend time on the historical books and the "Writings." Come and check it out!

Jerry Paré will teach this course. He has a Master of Arts in Scripture from the Claremont School of Theology in Claremont, California and knows how to make those dry bones talk! Jerry long ago realized that, like the Prophet Jeremiah, God seduced him, and he let himself be seduced (Jer 20:7) Woo!!
