Growing in Faith: The Affirmation of Vocation

This year we baptized two adults at the Easter Vigil on April 4th, confirmed 2 others and had five other parishioners formally reaffirm their faith before the Bishop and the entire Assembly. Chris Chartrand chose baptism by immersion, a notable first for Trinity Cathedral at the Easter Vigil. (David Rickert was baptized by immersion two years ago.) It has been another great year traveling this journey with these people. All of those on our leadership team and the sponsors thrive in this journey.

Next Sunday, Trinity Sunday, at the 9:00 service, we will mark another significant moment in this year's journey - The Rite of Affirmation of Vocation. "Really, Jerry, we aren't done yet?" No, part of the process is realizing that growing in our faith is something that we continue daily throughout our earthly lives.

The prayer that opens the Rite is "Dear Baptized friends: Baptized into the priesthood of Christ, we are called by the Holy Spirit to offer ourselves to the Lord of all creation in thanksgiving for all that God has done and continues to do for us...." This is what being called to God in Christ through the Spirit is all about.

The Affirmation of Vocation is normally celebrated on the Feast of Pentecost. This year, because that celebration lands in the middle of the Memorial Day weekend, we have moved the Affirmation to May 31st, Trinity Sunday. The rite is normally on the Feast of Pentecost because it celebrates what Pentecost celebrates - the realization of God's call inspired in us through the Holy Spirit. The Apostles finally shed their terror and stand up to boldly proclaim the Gospel. We are all called to this ministry, though the form of that proclamation is different for each disciple.

I want to thank the wonderful Growing in Faith leadership team - Laura Jestes, Jeanne Jurgens, Kelly Mieske and Pat Ronne. This undertaking each year would not be possible without their guidance and support. Thank you to our sponsors for traveling with all of us on this journey. Thank you to those who joined us to lead us in various types of prayer. And thank you for your prayers!

We will start again in December. Please come along for the ride!

The Reading Corner...

We are beginning a new weekly column for Trinity Cathedral Library book reviews by the Trinity Librarian, Phyllis Ehlert.

Remember the library is open in the elevator alcove on the first Sunday of the month.

+++++++++++++++++++

The Measure of a Man by Martin Luther King, Jr. The fact that this is a small, unintimidating book may entice the reader to pick it up whether as an introduction - heaven forbid - or for savoring three sermons: "The Measure of a Man," "The Dimensions of a Complete Life," and "Parting."

It is interesting to note that the book was published by Fortress Press, a Lutheran firm. Some may not know that the minister was born with the given name of Michael, after his father, also a well known preacher. The story goes that the elder King went on a trip to the Holy Land with a group of Baptist ministers in 1934, culminating in a world conference in Berlin. Becoming familiar with Martin Luther's conscience-based defiance of corruption in the Roman Catholic Church, the pastor changed his own name and his son's.

Can Trinity Go Solar?

TREE started to investigate solar power for Trinity buildings and discovered that Peter Perera had already done much research. Thank you, Peter. Here are our combined findings:

The facilities square footage is 24,266 and Trinity spends $26,000 on power annually, which we get from SMUD, (cheaper than P.G. & E.)

Peter has consulted with Valley Solar, Solar City, and Sun Run.

We can't put solar panels on the flat roof of the Great Hall because there is other equipment up there, and the adjacent building and tall parapet cast a shadow through part of the day.

The best place is on the roof of the bookshop, and panels there would generate approximately $8,000 worth of electricity per year, about a third of our consumption. Suggestions have been made to build a car port in the alley with panels, and we have considered posts with panels in the garden. All of this means construction costs.

Panels on the actual church roof have not been investigated yet.   Does anyone have strong feelings about this? Shall we pursue? email Ann at dzonokwa@comcast.net

TREE is researching funding organizations for non-profits who would help with costs.

An example is Renewable Social Benefits Funds (RSB Funds), where socially conscious investors get the tax credits and give the loan, and the church pays them for the electricity instead of paying the utility.

Other funding sources might be "crowd funding," community support, or a grant.

Greetings From the Garden...

"One of the pleasures of being a gardener comes from the enjoyment you get looking at other people's yards."  - Thalassa CrusoTo Everything There Is a Season: The Gardening Year

What wonderful weather we are having! The cooler days give newly planted flowers and vegetables recovery time. I hope you have stopped by to enjoy the progress we have made in the Community Garden - only 5 4x4 plots remain available to rent. For just $25 annually you too can grow juicy tomatoes, crunchy bell peppers, okra, cucumbers, more squash than anyone wants, and some flowers, too!

Flowers are a vital part of the garden. They draw in bees, our primary pollinating friends, and other beneficial insects. This Saturday the Fair Oaks Horticulture center will have speakers talking about gardening to support beneficial insects. Follow this link to check out the Horticulture center website. We are in the process of planting an insectary border along 27th Street to encourage beneficial insects and bring color and fragrance into the garden.   I am dreaming of a row of lavender growing along the garden in Trinity Alley.

Garden members have set up a concrete tabletop available for use as a shelf for a portable BBQ, or a demonstration area, or an alter. Don't forget that you can reserve the table and BBQ area for your group meeting or celebration. Please remember this is a working garden. You will need to clean off the table and chairs, remove your trash, and not pick anyone's produce, as tempting as it is! Otherwise, have a great time. Contact Dana Chamness, Facilities Manager, at 916 446-2513 for reservations.

May your time in the garden be a blessing!

Floyd School News...

Sparsely filled library shelves.

As Sleeping Beauty is progressing we have another project that needs our attention. Library books!
Currently the shelves are partly empty. I have talked with the staff and they have asked that you choose your favorite hard back children's book to donate to the library.

Floyd School library shelves.

We are creating a bookplate that you can use to put in your book. You can use a bookplate that says a gift from Trinity Cathedral or you may insert your own name. Either way it will be a great help to the school library.

You can deliver your book to church on Sunday, take it to the Floyd school table and select your book plate. You can bring your book to the office and leave a note as to which book plate you would like.

Your gift will be greatly appreciated.

Blessings,

Family Promise Mother's Day Dinner for Family Promise Moms Smashing Success!

On May 10, Mother's Day, Trinity Cathedral was blessed by the presence of three mothers and their families in the Great Hall. Given the day and the circumstances of the families, we decided to throw a special Mother's Day dinner for them. Floral settings for the tables were contributed by Trinity's Flower Committee. Gift bags with special "mom stuff" were assembled by Nancy Tennyson, with contributions from Avon representative Yvonne Osorio. For dinner we served spiral cut honey glazed ham, with roasted potatoes by Becky Barbrow, salad by MeriAngel Enriquez. For dessert we had a Mother's Day cake brought by Nancy and assorted treats by MeriAngel. Marlyn Jones and Becky acted as evening hosts and kitchen staff, and Ruben and Olivia, Family Promise graduates, served as our overnight hosts. Steve Skiffington was our Costco power shopper and ham hoister. (It should be mentioned that ham was just ounces short of 20 pounds!)

The families loved all of it! They were tired and sunburnt after a day at the river, and everyone had a hearty appetite. In the short time I have served as Family Promise coordinator, I have never seen a happier, livelier group.

If you missed out on the fun, there's another opportunity to join in. Trinity will be hosting the Family Promise families on Father's Day, June 21, 2015.

Radical Inclusion small group discussion - After hearing Yvette Flunder speak on this subject, come and participate in a small group discussion about Creating, Sustaining, Celebrating and Preaching to Community. Facilitator is Pamela Anderson.

Classes beginning May 14:

  • Facilitator - Vaughn Wolff: Finding Faith Hope and Love. This will be an exercise in listening and sharing our stories with an emphasis on spiritual awareness and the evidence of God working in us, in our environments and in the world. Learning how to be at Peace in spite of Adversity is the demonstration of spirit. Coming to a place of confidence that everything matters to God where we find Good in everything we see, hear, touch, feel, know and think, is the homecoming we all seek; and then we are equipped with the Light of Christ to walk back down into the dark places to bring the Light of Faith Hope and Love to those who are weary with the heaviness of a troubled life.

  • Facilitator - Susan Hotchkiss: Holy Women, Holy Men Celebrating the Saints.  This wonderful resource contains lives of men and women who have served God and humanity from ancient history to more current times.  We will discuss the make up of the book and delve into the historic context that put these people in the places and times God needed them to be.

PENTECOST

Speaking in Tongues

Sunday, May 24 at all services

Fifty days after the great celebration of Easter - Christ's resurrection from the dead - we have another great feast to celebrate: the coming of the Holy Spirit to Jesus' Apostles and to us - the Feast of Pentecost! Sometimes referred to as the birthday of the Church, Pentecost is one of the most important days of the Christian year. This year Pentecost is celebrated on May 24th. In the liturgical year, the color red represents the Holy Spirit. One will see red hangings on the Altar, the pulpit and the lectern. Many wear red to symbolize the Holy Spirit coming as in "tongues of fire". We hear the story from the Acts of the Apostles: "Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the Spirit gave them ability."

We will once again share the reading of scripture in "foreign languages". One verse from The Acts of the Apostles is read in as many languages as we have people to share them. If you speak another language, please share that gift with our Cathedral family. It is always great fun to hear this same verse over and over in languages that we do not know, but still share.

Beginning this Sunday we will have a sign up sheet at the Welcome Center or you may contact Elizabeth Kenealey at superverger@yahoo.com.

The gift of the Holy Spirit to all

The birth of God's church

Pentecost!

Certainly cause for great rejoicing.

Transept Ministers 9am -12pm
Community at large 9:30-12pm

Clergy: Rev. Lynell Walker
Lay Leader: Elba White

All who are interested in  healing ministry are invited and heartily encouraged to come and participate in this workshop based on Biblical truths.  I first experienced this approach to healing when I attended a 1 hour workshop at an International Conference of the Order of St. Luke the Physician perhaps 10 years ago in Texas.  I followed the leader's directions and God honored our efforts.  The results have been incorporated into my prayers since then, but I find it helpful to review and practice.  So this workshop will present information on the spine and the physical effects of injury and deterioration, allow time for practice and prayers by all participants, and led by our clergy have a time for worship.

Call Elba White at 916-684-4015 for more information.

Camp Noel Porter Camp Noel Porter

As you are making your summer plans be sure plan a week at camp Noel Porter for your children. There are camps for children from second grade up to high school. You can find a camp that is right for your child. Camp is a great place to make new friends, enjoy the beautiful Tahoe area and share in God's love. To register or get more information  visit www.campnoelporter.org

Speaking of camp, there are some youth that we know of who would like to go to camp but need some financial help. Camp costs $465 for the week. If you could sponsor a camper or just donate towards our scholarship fund. That would be great. Write your check to Trinity Cathedral and in the memo line put "Camp Noel Porter". A child will be very glad you did.

ALSO:
We need some hard working, sturdy people to help set up camp on Saturday, May 23. Anyone who can help for a day is needed. You can stay over night either Friday night or Saturday night if you need to. As the saying goes many hands make light work. I am going and hope to have some Trinity friends with me. Let me know if you can go.
