"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Yesterday I met with all of the chairs of committees of the Episcopal Church's General Convention that will be meeting this summer.  I have been asked to chair the committee that will be handling all of the marriage (read same-sex marriage) resolutions.  While I am not one who loves committee meetings, I am pleased to have been invited to serve on the Marriage committee and honored to be its chair.  This is an historic time in our church.  We will be considering changing our Canons to embrace marriage equality and considering authorizing rites, including the Prayer Book marriage rite, to include same-sex marriage.  The committee I chair will be responsible for shaping the language that, if approved by General Convention, will shape how marriages are blessed, and how couples are welcomed, for years to come.

In addition to being oriented to my duties and our procedures, the meeting let me talk with colleagues about the current state of inclusion in our church.  While in California, Marriage Equality is something the church has embraced, this isn't true for other parts of the Episcopal Church.  I am confident that we will authorize rites for blessing same sex marriages.  There will be voices, however, speaking against changing our Canons to include same-sex marriages, as well as altering the Prayer Book Marriage rite.  The challenge for the Convention will be how to move forward and honor all voices in the conversation.  I ask for your prayers.

At Trinity Cathedral, we have worked hard to incarnate our core value of openness.  We now fully embrace marriage equality and have recently worked to be open to people who are homeless and are struggling in many other ways.  It is now becoming clear that there are new ways the Spirit may be stretching us.  As our nation wrestles with racial and economic equality, I wonder how we might participate in the conversation.  I am pleased to welcome Bishop Yvette Flunder who will be speaking tomorrow night.  Bishop Flunder is the senior pastor of City of Refuge United Church of Christ in San Francisco and author of Where the Edge Gathers: building a community of radical inclusion.  Her talk will be proceeded by a brief performance from her gospel choir.  The music begins at 6:30 PM with Bishop Flunder's talk starting at 7:00 PM.  If you would like to get a taste of her speaking style, you can see a short video here

I hope you can join us.

The Reading Corner...

We are beginning a new weekly column for Trinity Cathedral Library book reviews by the Trinity Librarian, Phyllis Ehlert.

Remember the library is open in the elevator alcove on the first Sunday of the month.

A dic∙tion∙ar∙y of liturgical terms by Philip H. Pfatteicher.

One may wonder why a dictionary is offered for casual reading. But anyone with less than a seminary education may find it fascinating and even some preachers might. It covers commonplace things such as the custom of bowing in church, use of candles, and the term choir to more exotic such as blessing of the waters, Maundy, precedence, and sacrarium.

Floyd School News...

Sparsely filled library shelves.

As Sleeping Beauty is progressing we have another project that needs our attention. Library books!
Currently the shelves are partly empty. I have talked with the staff and they have asked that you choose your favorite hard back children's book to donate to the library.

Floyd School library shelves.

We are creating a bookplate that you can use to put in your book. You can use a bookplate that says a gift from Trinity Cathedral or you may insert your own name. Either way it will be a great help to the school library.

You can deliver your book to church on Sunday, take it to the Floyd school table and select your book plate. You can bring your book to the office and leave a note as to which book plate you would like.

Your gift will be greatly appreciated.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

NorCal AIDS Cycle 2015 update from Canon Link

With only a week until NorCal AIDS Cycle 2015 begins, training and fund-raising has kicked into high gear. My goal is to ride a couple of hundred miles a week, which should put me in a good place for the ride.

I am also trying to finish up my fund-raising, but I need your help! I realize that I had a lofty goal of raising eight-thousand dollars this year. And while I am in the neighborhood of that amount, I still need to raise another $1500 or so to make that goal. If you've been thinking about it, but just having gotten around to it, now is the time! I would love to start the ride this year, having made my goal.

Again, thank you all so much for your support. It truly makes a difference in our community, and ensures that the agencies which provide vital services will be able to continue for another year.

Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder
Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder

Bishop Flunder is the senior pastor of the City of Refuge Church in Oakland.  The Adult Ministries team is pleased to announce that she will be the next speaker in our series.  She will speak about her diverse ministry in the inner city and how her congregation reaches for the "fringe" in society and pulls them to the center.  Jesus hung out with those who were cast out by society and brought them to the center of his ministry.  We are called to do the same.

Bishop Flunder's book entitled, "Where the Edge Gathers" speaks directly to this in a profound and moving way.  It's an easy read which will touch your heart.

Additionally, we will have a huge gift!  Bishop Flunder's choir is coming to sing!!!  If you want to hear some great rockin', gospel music, you will NOT want to miss this.

Music begins at 6:30pm and Bishop Flunder will speak from 7-9pm with a reception and book signing to follow in the Great Hall.  Tickets are $12 and available in the bookshop.  See you all then!

Family Promise

Family Promise Week begins TODAY

The Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, May 10, 2015! We are looking for volunteers who can fix a dinner (you can leave it in the kitchen and we'll heat it up if you like), welcome the families at 5:30 p.m. and help set and clean up the dining area, or ensure their safety and comfort overnight in the Great Hall. We're also looking for people to fix breakfast for them on Saturday morning the 16th, and wash the bedding on Sunday the 17th after they leave.

You only have to do one task, one time during the hosting week. Many hands make light work, and this is a very rewarding ministry. Sacramento Family Promise found homes and jobs for 30 families last year, making it the most successful of all the FP branches in the country. They owe this to the network of churches who host the families at night. Trinity is one of the founding members of this network, and we are proud to share in this success.

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster hanging in the office hallway by the door leading to the Great Hall, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or call/text 916-708-4295. There is also a paper FAQ on Family Promise available at the office if you wish to know more about this ministry.

Next Week & Beyond

Choral Evensong for Ascension Day

Thursday, May 14 at 6:00pm

The Cathedral Choir sings the final evensong for 2014-15 season. This short meditative service of music, prayer, and readings is a great way to finish a busy and stressful day. Included will be music by Iain Quinn, Richard Lloyd, Herbert Sumsion, and the exciting anthem "O Sing Joyfully" by Adrian Batten.

Please join us as we celebrate Jesus' completion of God's plan for us!

Thursday Night at the Cathedral

New Small Group beginning May 14

Radical Inclusion small group discussion - After hearing Yvette Flunder speak on this subject, come and participate in a small group discussion about Creating, Sustaining, Celebrating and Preaching to Community. Facilitator is Pamela Anderson.

OTHER Classes beginning May 14:

  • Facilitator - Vaughn Wolff: Finding Faith Hope and Love. This will be an exercise in listening and sharing our stories with an emphasis on spiritual awareness and the evidence of God working in us, in our environments and in the world. Learning how to be at Peace in spite of Adversity is the demonstration of spirit. Coming to a place of confidence that everything matters to God where we find Good in everything we see, hear, touch, feel, know and think, is the homecoming we all seek; and then we are equipped with the Light of Christ to walk back down into the dark places to bring the Light of Faith Hope and Love to those who are weary with the heaviness of a troubled life.

  • Facilitator - Susan Hotchkiss: Holy Women, Holy Men Celebrating the Saints.  This wonderful resource contains lives of men and women who have served God and humanity from ancient history to more current times.  We will discuss the make up of the book and delve into the historic context that put these people in the places and times God needed them to be.

Radical Hands on Healing
May 30 in the Cathedral
Transept Ministers 9am -12pm
Community at large 9:30-12pm

Clergy: Rev. Lynell Walker
Lay Leader: Elba White

All who are interested in  healing ministry are invited and heartily encouraged to come and participate in this workshop based on Biblical truths.  I first experienced this approach to healing when I attended a 1 hour workshop at an International Conference of the Order of St. Luke the Physician perhaps 10 years ago in Texas.  I followed the leader's directions and God honored our efforts.  The results have been incorporated into my prayers since then, but I find it helpful to review and practice.  So this workshop will present information on the spine and the physical effects of injury and deterioration, allow time for practice and prayers by all participants, and led by our clergy have a time for worship.

Call Elba White at 916-684-4015 for more information.
