"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Last week Andrea and I were blessed to be able to go to the Holy Land with other Cathedral Deans from North America.  We were hosted by the Dean of St. George's Cathedral in Jerusalem.  It was a remarkable trip and it is already impacting how I read and think about the Bible.  For me, one of the most important parts of the trip was walking through the old, walled city of Jerusalem, and experiencing the geography of the area.  For example, the gospels tell of Jesus lamenting over the violence in Jerusalem as he looked at it from the Mount of Olives. "Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city that kills the prophets and stones those who are sent to it! How often have I desired to gather your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, and you were not willing!" (Matthew 23:37)  I have now been to the Mount of Olives and I understand Jesus' geographical perspective as he uttered those words.

The trip was necessarily brief.  The Deans Conference normally lasts just four days and is usually hosted by a cathedral in North America.  While this conference was longer than usual, with the other items on our agenda we had only four days for pilgrimage activities.  Andrea and I are considering leading a pilgrimage, perhaps in 2016.  We want to share the experience we had and we want more time in the Holy Land.  I will keep you posted as our plans evolve.

I preached about my experience last Sunday.  You can see my sermon here. I took many, many photos.  While it will be a while before I can sort through all of the photos, I have created a small, Jerusalem-focused album here All of the photos, except for the one of Andrea at the Sea of Galilee, are either in Jerusalem or of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives.

I look forward to sharing more of my experience in the weeks to come.

The Reading Corner...

We are beginning a new weekly column for Trinity Cathedral Library book reviews by the Trinity Librarian, Phyllis Ehlert.

Remember the library is open in the elevator alcove on the first Sunday of the month.

++++++

God's Bestseller: William Tyndale, Thomas More, and the writing of the English Bible - a story of martyrdom and betrayal by Brian Moynahan. If one is to believe Wikipedia, the Bible is the most published book of all time. So it seems incomprehensible to us that before Reformation times the Bible was not available to the masses and never in the vernacular.

When William Tyndale left England in 1524 in order to translate the Bible into English, it was considered heresy! He translated the New Testament, and smuggled it into England two years later. One can read about the wrath of Henry VIII, the sympathy of Anne Boleyn, and the malice of Thomas More - it is drama ripe for BBC.

Floyd School News...

We had our first rehearsal on the stage yesterday! The kids are getting excited about their costumes and the sets.

The following are a few things we still need.

  • Pattern for a rabbit costume about size 8 we can modify.
  • Gold trims we are ok on buttons.
  • Christmas trees five feet and smaller to make a forest. We will return them to you.
  • People to work behind stage to help the cast.

We rehearse on Monday, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 3:45 to 5:00 pm. Please come any time you can.

Thank you for your help.

Blessings,

NorCal AIDS Cycle 2015 update from Canon Link

With only a few short weeks until NorCal AIDS Cycle 2015 begins, training and fund-raising has kicked into high gear. My goal is to ride a couple of hundred miles a week for the next few weeks, which should put me in a good place for the ride.

I am also trying to finish up my fund-raising, but I need your help! I realize that I had a lofty goal of raising eight-thousand dollars this year. And while I am in the neighborhood of that amount, I still need to raise another $1500 or so to make that goal. If you've been thinking about it, but just having gotten around to it, now is the time! I would love to start the ride this year, having made my goal.

Again, thank you all so much for your support. It truly makes a difference in our community, and ensures that the agencies which provide vital services will be able to continue for another year.

Bishop Yvette Flunder

To speak at Trinity Cathedral
Friday, May 8, 2015

Gospel Choir:  6:30pm

Bishop Flunder:  7pm

Tickets: $12

Bishop Yvette Flunder is one of the top five preachers I have ever heard.  Watch this video and you will see why.

Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder
Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder

Bishop Flunder is the senior pastor of the City of Refuge Church in Oakland.  The Adult Ministries team is pleased to announce that she will be the next speaker in our series.  She will speak about her diverse ministry in the inner city and how her congregation reaches for the "fringe" in society and pulls them to the center.  Jesus hung out with those who were cast out by society and brought them to the center of his ministry.  We are called to do the same.

Bishop Flunder's book entitled, "Where the Edge Gathers" speaks directly to this in a profound and moving way.  It's an easy read which will touch your heart.

Additionally, we will have a huge gift!  Bishop Flunder's choir is coming to sing!!!  If you want to hear some great rockin', gospel music, you will NOT want to miss this.

Music begins at 6:30pm and Bishop Flunder will speak from 7-9pm with a reception and book signing to follow in the Great Hall.  Tickets are $12 and available in the bookshop.  See you all then!

Family Promise

Family Promise Week is Coming May 10-17, 2015

The Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, May 10, 2015! We are looking for volunteers who can fix a dinner (you can leave it in the kitchen and we'll heat it up if you like), welcome the families at 5:30 p.m. and help set and clean up the dining area, or ensure their safety and comfort overnight in the Great Hall. We're also looking for people to fix breakfast for them on Saturday morning the 16th, and wash the bedding on Sunday the 17th after they leave.

You only have to do one task, one time during the hosting week. Many hands make light work, and this is a very rewarding ministry. Sacramento Family Promise found homes and jobs for 30 families last year, making it the most successful of all the FP branches in the country. They owe this to the network of churches who host the families at night. Trinity is one of the founding members of this network, and we are proud to share in this success.

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster hanging in the office hallway by the door leading to the Great Hall, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or call/text 916-708-4295. There is also a paper FAQ on Family Promise available at the office if you wish to know more about this ministry.

Radical Hands on Healing
May 30 in the Cathedral
Transept Ministers 9am -12pm
Community at large 9:30-12pm

Clergy: Rev. Lynell Walker
Lay Leader: Elba White

All who are interested in  healing ministry are invited and heartily encouraged to come and participate in this workshop based on Biblical truths.  I first experienced this approach to healing when I attended a 1 hour workshop at an International Conference of the Order of St. Luke the Physician perhaps 10 years ago in Texas.  I followed the leader's directions and God honored our efforts.  The results have been incorporated into my prayers since then, but I find it helpful to review and practice.  So this workshop will present information on the spine and the physical effects of injury and deterioration, allow time for practice and prayers by all participants, and led by our clergy have a time for worship.

Call Elba White at 916-684-4015 for more information.
