The Reading Corner...

We are beginning a new weekly column for Trinity Cathedral Library book reviews by the Trinity Librarian, Phyllis Ehlert.

Remember the library is open in the elevator alcove on the first Sunday of the month.

Beyond the Walls: Monastic Wisdom for Everyday Life by Paul Wilkes.

The author began monthly visits to a Trappist monastery for respite from his hectic professional world and for religious insight. It was far more complex than he expected. He observes that the desire of St. Bernard and St. Benedict-"though modern-day jargon would have been incomprehensible to them"-was to make "self-actualized, happy individuals."

And he states: "It is true that God seems closer to us when we are silent. It is not so much that God is speaking more clearly; it is rather that, having turned off the static of our lives, we are listening better." Wilkes gained much from his year and in this book wants to share with others.

AB 35 and AB 90 Pass First Legislative Committee
Support letters still needed!

Two of the four bills in this year's housing-affordability bill package have cleared their first hurdle in the Capitol. Today, AB 35 (Chiu and Atkins) and AB 90 (Chau) both passed the Assembly Housing and Community Development Committee. (Remind me what these bills do.)

Housing California Executive Director Shamus Roller had this to say, "State investment in affordable home development has dwindled even as the need for homes affordable to large segments of California workers and families has spiked. Speaker Atkins' 4-prong package of legislation works together to create the financing tools that will get California building affordable homes again, support local governments in meeting housing needs in their communities, and leverage billions of federal and private dollars that will bring good jobs to our state."

Vocal Art Ensemble "Mostly Madrigals"

The Trinity Cathedral Music Series presents the Vocal Art Ensemble in concert. This concert traces the heritage of this faire art form, toasting the charm that made it beloved among monarchs and peasants alike. This hour long musical feast nourishes a finer appreciation of early music, and gifes a taste of its influence both across the globe and through the generations.

VAE will be joined by the "Baroque and Beyond" recorder ensemble for this unique program. Suggested donation at the door $10-25. Please join us for this musical feast!

Bishop Yvette Flunder

To speak at Trinity Cathedral
Friday, May 8, 2015

Gospel Choir:  6:30pm

Bishop Flunder:  7pm

Tickets: $12

Bishop Yvette Flunder is one of the top five preachers I have ever heard.  Watch this video and you will see why.

Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder
Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder

Bishop Flunder is the senior pastor of the City of Refuge Church in Oakland.  The Adult Ministries team is pleased to announce that she will be the next speaker in our series.  She will speak about her diverse ministry in the inner city and how her congregation reaches for the "fringe" in society and pulls them to the center.  Jesus hung out with those who were cast out by society and brought them to the center of his ministry.  We are called to do the same.

Bishop Flunder's book entitled, "Where the Edge Gathers" speaks directly to this in a profound and moving way.  It's an easy read which will touch your heart.

Additionally, we will have a huge gift!  Bishop Flunder's choir is coming to sing!!!  If you want to hear some great rockin', gospel music, you will NOT want to miss this.

Music begins at 6:30pm and Bishop Flunder will speak from 7-9pm with a reception and book signing to follow in the Great Hall.  Tickets are $12 and available in the bookshop.  See you all then!

Family Promise

Family Promise Week is Coming May 10-17, 2015

The Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, May 10, 2015! We are looking for volunteers who can fix a dinner (you can leave it in the kitchen and we'll heat it up if you like), welcome the families at 5:30 p.m. and help set and clean up the dining area, or ensure their safety and comfort overnight in the Great Hall. We're also looking for people to fix breakfast for them on Saturday morning the 16th, and wash the bedding on Sunday the 17th after they leave.

You only have to do one task, one time during the hosting week. Many hands make light work, and this is a very rewarding ministry. Sacramento Family Promise found homes and jobs for 30 families last year, making it the most successful of all the FP branches in the country. They owe this to the network of churches who host the families at night. Trinity is one of the founding members of this network, and we are proud to share in this success.

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster hanging in the office hallway by the door leading to the Great Hall, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or call/text 916-708-4295. There is also a paper FAQ on Family Promise available at the office if you wish to know more about this ministry.

EfM
Education for Ministry Graduation
Friday, May 15 at 7pm

All are invited to join in celebrating this year's Education for Ministry (EfM) graduation (including our own Jean Alford), in the Cathedral, with a reception following.  If you've ever wondered what EfM is, it's a great way to learn more, and if you're an EfM alumni, it's a great way to reconnect.  Hope to see you there!

For more info on Trinity's EfM program, contact Carol Savoie at 1mecanuk@gmail.com or Loren Weatherly at loren.weatherly@gmail.com.  Registration for next year's program begins in June, and some scholarship aid is available.  For general program info see http://efm.sewanee.edu/
Education for Ministry Scholarships

Support Trinity's Education for Ministry (EfM) program by donating to the scholarship fund!  Checks or cash can be dropped in the collection plate or at the office by noting "EfM Scholarships" in the check memo line or on the donation envelope.  And come celebrate the 2015 EfM graduation, Friday, May 15 at 7 p.m. with reception following.  All are welcome!

McAllister Keller Guitar Duo

The suggested donation at the door is $15 general, $10 for students & seniors (65+), and children ten and under are free. Please join us for an evening for exceptional music!

Greetings from the Garden...

by Eileen Harvey-Qualset

Please come by and enjoy our accomplishments in Trinity's Community Garden! Many beds are planted and others are in the process. The two front beds facing 27th street are being planted with vegetables for River City Food Bank, as is the area along Trinity Alley. We have a few 4 foot by 4 foot beds and two 4 foot by 8 foot beds still available for annual rental. Come join us!

Along 27th street we are installing an insectary border. This is a border of plants that attract beneficial insects, bees and birds. It will probably take two years to finish this project. Some of the plants going in the ground this year include yarrow, parsley, Winter-blooming Honeysuckle (Lonicera fragrantissima), cosmos, Mexican Torch Flower (Tithonia rotundifolia), and Cleveland Sage (Salvia clevelandii).  We have seen lady bugs busy eating aphids and hope other beneficials will soon join them. I have a dream of lining Trinity Alley with Lavender plants.

Last weekend Vestry Member Kevin Sanders and I attended Sacramento's Interfaith Community Garden Association. There is quite a range of activity in Sacramento: full scale urban gardening for food banks, community garden start up's like ours, and those in the planning stage. Some sites have preschools and the gardens are a wonderful learning environment.

Gardens are wonderful places, full of spirit and comfort. We are expanding our garden mission to include other activities besides gardening. Currently there is a table and eight chairs under a canopy available for meetings, picnics and other small gatherings. Please contact Dana Chamness, Facility Manager, to schedule time. You can reach him at (916) 446-2513.

And of course, this time of year, no gardening notes are complete without a plea for help in pulling weeds...
