TREE's 9th Annual Earth Day Fair...

and the Eiffel Tower!

by Ann Rothschild

Come celebrate God's creation with us as TREE holds its 9th Annual Earth Day Fair in the patio on Sunday, April 19th, from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.

Once again, we will be giving away tomato plants. Representatives from SMUD, Sierra Club, Mountain Lion Foundation, and many more will be here to offer information and inspiration. Learn about GMOs and Electrical Sensitivity, buy yourself a solar cooker for the summer and save gas, and

browse the latest green books and films.

And if you want more good news, here is an encouraging report from Paris:

In their mission to reduce greenhouse gas and boost green energy, the city of Paris has installed wind turbines and solar panels on their 125 year old Eiffel Tower. These improvements offset the commercial activity on the tower's first floor and service two panoramic pavilions. They also have put in a rainwater recovery system that provides flushing water for the toilets. Some interesting info on how they installed the wind turbines at care2.com

Hey, if Paris can do it, why can't we?

Good Job, Ethan!

Commendation and thanks to Ethan for his great contribution of boxes of books to River City Food Bank on Friday, April 10.  Ethan and his mom, Sandy, also helped on the food line handing out food after stocking the empty book shelves with amazing books for children and adults.

Great job Ethan, and thanks Sandy.

Call to Witness

How many times have you heard about a community meeting, rally or demonstration regarding an issue of concern that took place "yesterday" and thought to yourself "If I'd only known. I would have been there."  We are pleased to announce Call to Witness, a new ministry to keep you in the loop!

There are times when people of faith and our values need to be seen and heard.   Community meetings, sessions of elected officials, vigils, rallies and marches can offer us the opportunity to publicly respond as caring, Christian people to issues that affect our sisters and brothers, the larger community and society as a whole.  Call to Witness is intended to let you know about those times.

Call to Witness is not a system to send out information about regular meetings and events in the community or here at Trinity Cathedral.  Rather, Call to Witness is designed to inform you of specific events where your presence is needed to make a strong statement.

  • To sign up for the Call to Witness list, please click HERE
  • Notifications will be sent via email with the subject line: Call to Witness
  • When a notice is sent, it will give the date, time and location of the event along with a very brief explanation of the issue.
  • Notifications for an event will be sent only once.  You will not receive multiple notifications of the same event.
  • The number of notices you might receive are dictated by events in the community.  You might receive one or two a month.  It's possible there might not be any notices at all for a stretch of time.  The Holy Spirit moves as She will!
  • If you will be in attendance at an event, please respond 'yes' to the e-mail so we can have general idea of the number of people we can expect.
  • If you are not able to attend an event, you need do nothing with the notice. Simply "delete".
  • You are not expected to respond with your presence at every event.
  • You may "opt out" of Call to Witness at any time.

Ministry takes many forms, and one of the strongest can be our presence.  Thank you for considering this very important and public ministry of witness.

Holy Week musical gratitude

There are so many people who made the music for Holy Week at the Cathedral special. All of the members of the Cathedral Choir, Celebration Choir, Cathedral Choristers, and Resurrexit. And especially our talented choral scholars: Taylor Haines, Chris Miller, Derek Keller, Patrick F. Rick Kenealey, and Mary Wiley Smith. Thanks to Kamilyn Henry Davis, Director of our Cathedral Choristers, who also popped in to do some accompanying on Easter Day.

And to all of our dedicated clergy and lay staff, who are such a pleasure to work with. Mentioning especially Pat Underwood, who spent so many hours producing our service booklets for the week. A huge thank you to all of you for everything you bring to this work!

Instructional Eucharist
This Sunday, April 19, at 3:00 PM in the Cathedral.

Do you sometimes wonder what we are doing during the Mass?  Why do we kneel or stand at certain times?  Why the number of readings we have and who chooses them?   What is happening when the priest raises the bread and the wine?  We will examine these and numerous other questions about "what we do" when we celebrate the Eucharist this Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM.  The instruction will be an actual Eucharist. The Rev Bob Phillippi will preside and Jerry Pare' will provide the commentary.  All are welcome.  For more information, please contact Jerry Pare' (916-930-8032 or jpare111452@gmail.com).  All are welcome!

Bishop Yvette Flunder

To speak at Trinity Cathedral
Friday, May 8, 2015

Gospel Choir:  6:30pm

Bishop Flunder:  7pm

Tickets: $12

Bishop Yvette Flunder is one of the top five preachers I have ever heard.  Watch this video and you will see why.

Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder
Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder

Bishop Flunder is the senior pastor of the City of Refuge Church in Oakland.  The Adult Ministries team is pleased to announce that she will be the next speaker in our series.  She will speak about her diverse ministry in the inner city and how her congregation reaches for the "fringe" in society and pulls them to the center.  Jesus hung out with those who were cast out by society and brought them to the center of his ministry.  We are called to do the same.

Bishop Flunder's book entitled, "Where the Edge Gathers" speaks directly to this in a profound and moving way.  It's an easy read which will touch your heart.

Additionally, we will have a huge gift!  Bishop Flunder's choir is coming to sing!!!  If you want to hear some great rockin', gospel music, you will NOT want to miss this.

Music begins at 6:30pm and Bishop Flunder will speak from 7-9pm with a reception and book signing to follow in the Great Hall.  Tickets are $12 and available in the bookshop.  See you all then!

Family Promise

Family Promise Week is Coming May 10-17, 2015

The Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, May 10, 2015! We are looking for volunteers who can fix a dinner (you can leave it in the kitchen and we'll heat it up if you like), welcome the families at 5:30 p.m. and help set and clean up the dining area, or ensure their safety and comfort overnight in the Great Hall. We're also looking for people to fix breakfast for them on Saturday morning the 16th, and wash the bedding on Sunday the 17th after they leave.

You only have to do one task, one time during the hosting week. Many hands make light work, and this is a very rewarding ministry. Sacramento Family Promise found homes and jobs for 30 families last year, making it the most successful of all the FP branches in the country. They owe this to the network of churches who host the families at night. Trinity is one of the founding members of this network, and we are proud to share in this success.

Please sign up on the Family Promise poster hanging in the office hallway by the door leading to the Great Hall, or email Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or call/text 916-708-4295. There is also a paper FAQ on Family Promise available at the office if you wish to know more about this ministry.
