"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Today begins the holiest time in the church year.  Tonight, with our Maundy Thursday services, we begin the Easter Triduum, a three-day period that is considered one extended time of worship.  Tonight we celebrate Maundy Thursday with our regular 7:30pm service as well as a special service for families with children at 4:30pm.  "Maundy" means "command" and is connected to the command Jesus gave his disciples to love one another as he loved them.  We will share in a foot-washing as well as remember Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples.  The services then flows in to a vigil in the East Transept that connects us with Jesus time in the Garden of Gethsemane.

Tomorrow we have two Good Friday services: a meditation vigil from noon to 3:00pm and a traditional Good Friday liturgy at 7:30pm.  At the vigil there will be periods of silence, scripture and 7 spoken meditations.  If you can't participate in the entire vigil, please feel free to come for a portion of it.  There will be a group that will participate in the beginning of the meditation vigil and then pray the "stations of the city" at various places of brokenness in our community.

Our primary service on Saturday is the Easter Vigil which begins at 7:30pm.  The Bishop will be our celebrant and preacher and several members of the Cathedral will be received or baptized or will renew their faith.  The Easter Vigil is preceded by the Holy Saturday service at 9:00am, a pancake breakfast at 9:00 and the Easter Eggstravaganza with crafts and Easter egg hunt at 10:00am.

On Easter Sunday we have our services at the regular times: 7:30am, 9:00am, 11:15am and 12:45pm.  I will be preaching at the first three and The Rev. Diana Turner will preach at the 12:45.  There will be a free brunch in the Great Hall.

You can see the full schedule here.

Have a blessed Triduum!

A letter to the Cathedral...

Dear Bishop Beisner, Dean Baker,

and Trinity Cathedral Clergy,

Yesterday, I held a palm branch aloft as the sun rose over Sutter's Fort, and the voices of many local congregations joined in unison - "Hosanna!"  Just as these palm leaves symbolically brought Christ into Jerusalem and into our hearts, when the clergy gathered to symbolically hold a rainbow flag at Trinity Cathedral, Christ's love was brought into the hearts of the LGBTQ community.

The brief moment on Trinity Cathedral's steps, holding the rainbow LGBTQ pride flag, was a powerful, radical act of profound love.  You stood up with the clergy, and fearlessly held your ground, standing with love against the homophobia that has this week pulled apart the State of Indiana in the name of religion, standing with love against the bullying and hate that has claimed young lives through suicide, standing with love against all the bigotry, the intolerance, and the fear that has driven so many to hurt others and hurt themselves.  In a world where people still have to wonder or even ask if they are welcome - let alone loved - by Christ and by the Church, you stood up for the completely radical act of proclaiming love, and offering hope.

This simple, quiet act - of holding up a rainbow flag, and standing to be counted up there on the Cathedral steps - was one of the most deliberate acts of sincere love I have witnessed in my life.  For the frightened child I still held inside me, frightened to come out, to be rejected, to be hated - this was a very healing moment.  For the young people that still hold such fears - you've given them hope.  As Harvey Milk said, "The only thing they have to look forward to is hope. And you have to give them hope. Hope for a better world, hope for a better tomorrow, hope for a better place to come to if the pressures at home are too great. Hope that all will be all right."

On behalf of the entire LGBTQ community, thank you.  Thank you from the deepest sense of love I'm able to return to all of you.  Thank you for giving our entire world hope.

Yours very sincerely,
                                                           Michael Donnoe

Automatic Check Withdrawals and
Credit Card Pledge Users

Since the transition of our bookkeeping staff with Michi Low's illness, we have been struggling to keep up on all aspects of donation processing.  This has significantly impacted on automatic check withdrawals (ACH) and credit card payments for your pledge.  We have not been able to process ACH and credit card donations for March.  We take management of your donations seriously and apologize for the current circumstance.

We have hired a staff accountant to take over the bookkeeping position.  She will start this Tuesday.  We expect to be able to process such payments by mid-April.  If you have questions, please contact Jerry Pare' (jpare111452@gmail.com; 916-257-2489).

Thank you for your patience.

Maundy Thursday Service for Children and Families

Thursday, April 2 at 4:30 p.m.

Living out our faith stories help us to know that this great story is ours, and that we, too, have an active role in it. At Christmas the story becomes real and tangible for children as they take part in the journey to the stable as angels, shepherds or kings. On Maundy Thursday we have a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience one of our most important stories: the last supper Jesus shared with his friends. We'll wash feet, share the bread and wine, and clear and wash the altar as we leave the space empty for the transformation of the resurrection. Maundy Thursday sets the stage for the wonder and joy of Easter. Please join us for this engaging, interactive service designed especially for children. All are welcome!

Stations of the City on Good Friday

Friday, April 3

The Rev. Kathy Hopner and Rev. Megan Anderson will lead a Stations of the City liturgy. This service blends elements of Stations of the Cross with elements of contemporary city living. Stations of the cross originated as a way in which Christians could take a sort of pilgrimage journey reflecting on the last moments of Jesus' life. This Good Friday we will share the story of Jesus' last hours while walking to sites in need of justice work such as River City, the hospital, and the RT station. The Stations Journey will start with worship at the Cathedral at noon and will end back at the Cathedral before the main Good Friday vigil has concluded. If you would like to offer a short reflection at one of our stops or would like to be involved in the stations in any other way, please let us know!

Next Week & Beyond
"Do this often in remembrance of Me"

These words are part of the consecration of bread and wine that happen every time we celebrate Holy Communion at the Cathedral.  They come from Jesus and were spoken at the last Passover meal he shared with his disciples before his crucifixion.  Each week we come forward and share in a meal together, but I have become increasingly aware that there are some for whom full participation in this Eucharistic feast is not possible.

The Worship and Music Ministry Team has worked on this and have decided that beginning the Sunday after Easter, April 12th, we will begin offering the "wine" in both kinds: the white wine we currently use and white grape juice.  At each of the services there will be a white grape juice option in the west transept and it will be in a pottery chalice for easy identification.

The Cathedral has had a long history of accommodating those with allergies to wheat by offering rice wafers.  It only seems right that we offer white grape juice to those who have reasons not to drink wine:  small children, people with health/medication issues and people in recovery.  +Bishop Beisner and Dean Baker are fully on board with this decision.  We want all to be welcome to fully participate at Christ's table. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

New Small Group Series

Beginning the week of April 12th, we will have a new four week small group series.  The groups will look at the four appearance sightings of Jesus according to each of the four Gospels.  If you would like to see what groups are available, please go our website where you will see the times and days and who will be leading them.  Brochures are also available in the back of the church.  If you have any further questions, please speak with Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson or email her at pamela@trinitycathedral.org.  Come join the fun!
