"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

This has been a week of loss.  On Monday the memorial service for 13-year-old Connor Burns was held in the Cathedral.  The church was overflowing with family, friends and classmates of Connor's brother and two sisters.  The service was beautiful, heart-wrenching and absolutely holy.  As Lynell might say, the Holy Spirit was all over the place.  Yesterday Michi Low, who worked for years as our bookkeeper, died after suffering a stroke.   Michi was a beloved, quiet, steadfast presence in the office.  I ask your prayers for her daughters, Lani and Laura.

In the wake of these two deaths, I find myself struck with periods of sadness as well as gratitude for being knit together by God in a community that holds on to one another in times of loss.  There is a bittersweet, sad beauty as we are honest with our grief in the midst of this life-affirming community of resurrection.

Lent is an appropriate time for such honest experiences of real life.  My heart is open as we head in to Holy Week, where we walk with Jesus on his own journey of love and suffering.   I know on the other side of this grief is resurrection, but it isn't time for that yet.

I hope you are able to join me in our walk through Holy Week, which starts on Palm Sunday, March 29.

Blessings,

Brian

Reception Hosts

The Hospitality Committee is in need of reception coordinators and hosts for the Easter Vigil (Saturday April 4 eve) and Randy Knutson's Ordination (Saturday, April 25 mid-day).  And we could still use a few more coffee hour hosts/co-hosts for the 11:15 and 9 a.m. Sunday services.  Want to help with any of these welcoming activities? Please email or call Georgianna Pfost for more info at dugongs@sbcglobal.net or (916) 266-1802.

The Easter Bunny

needs your help!

We need filled plastic Easter eggs for our annual Easter egg hunt.

Please bring 10 - 12 plastic eggs filled with a piece of candy or a sticker to church on the Sundays before April 4th, or drop them off at the church office. We have bags of empty eggs in the back of the church and in the Great Hall - please take a bag of eggs and bring them back filled. You are also welcome to purchase empty plastic eggs yourself, and bring them back filled.

If you'd like to "recycle" your plastic eggs after Easter - bring them to church and we'll use them next year.

Love a parade? Love to sing?

Love to meet people?

Love Brass Bands?

Have we got a deal for you!

On Palm Sunday, several churches in the Sutter's Fort area will be gathering to start our worship service together, and we will then process to our home churches for Palm Sunday service.

We will be joining with First United Methodist, Pioneer Congregational, and our own St. Paul's for this wonderful worship experience. City of Trees Brass Band (think New Orleans marching band!) will be providing good 'ol heart thumpin' music. To paraphrase Fats Waller, 'This Fort is jumpin!'

Gather at the main gates of the fort at 7:30am

Worship begins at 8am

Procession to churches begins at 8:30am

Nine-o-clockers will have plenty of time to be back home at Trinity for our Palm Sunday service. We hope to make this an annual event.

Stations of the City on Good Friday

Friday, April 3

The Rev. Kathy Hopner and Rev. Megan Anderson will lead a Stations of the City liturgy. This service blends elements of Stations of the Cross with elements of contemporary city living. Stations of the cross originated as a way in which Christians could take a sort of pilgrimage journey reflecting on the last moments of Jesus' life. This Good Friday we will share the story of Jesus' last hours while walking to sites in need of justice work such as River City, the hospital, and the RT station. The Stations Journey will start with worship at the Cathedral at noon and will end back at the Cathedral before the main Good Friday vigil has concluded. If you would like to offer a short reflection at one of our stops or would like to be involved in the stations in any other way, please let us know!

Bishop Yvette Flunder has been a regular preacher on the "Living the Questions" series and she may be very familiar to you. (Please check her out in this video clip, it will be well worth your while!)

Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder
Beyond the Either/Or God -- Yvette Flunder

Additionally, she founded the City of Refuge United Church of Christ in 1991 in order to unite a gospel ministry with a social ministry. City of Refuge is a thriving inner-city congregation that celebrates the radically inclusive love of Jesus Christ.  Here is what she wrote for their home webpage:

Trying to establish a relationship with a God that barely tolerates you but cannot truly accept and certainly will never celebrate you can do incredible damage to ones self esteem. The tortured historical and theological view that suggests that some people are just flawed or born to be the underclass and should never expect to be on God's 'A' list, has been the convenient method used to hold women, immigrants, the poor and LGBT people in chains of self-depreciation.

We all need community. When access to existing communities is not available, marginalized people must seek to develop community for and among themselves. We at City of Refuge UCC are giving birth to a fresh, emerging Christian community. We believe that now, as in the time of Jesus' earthly ministry, seemingly marginalized people respond to a community of openness and inclusivity, where other people from the edge gather. City of Refuge UCC welcomes people to be who they are by embracing a theology of acceptance - a radical inclusivity that leaves no one behind.

Welcome Home!

Rev. Dr. Y.A. Flunder

Bishop Flunder is one of this country's top preachers and the author of "Where the Edge Gathers:  A Theology and Homiletic on Radical Inclusion".  Bishop Flunder will be the next speaker in our series on Friday, May 8th at 7pm.  Tickets are $12 and you can purchase them in the Cathedral Book Shop.  There will be Special Music at 6:30pm and a book signing following the event in the Great Hall.  See you all then!
