What a great annual meeting!  That is what I think after ever annual meeting at Trinity Cathedral.  This was my 10th, and I am always struck by the joy and positive energy.  This year we had the dinner from

5:30pm to 6:30pm, and then stayed in the Great Hall for the meeting.  While we noticed some glitches, it seems staying in the Great Hall for the meeting was a success.  I would like to offer a summary of the meeting.

Here are the election results:

Vestry:  Linda Aston, David Lindgren, Doss Miller, Peter Perera and Mike Pinkerton.   The Vestry will be voting to fill an unexpired two-year term.  If you are interested in serving on the vestry, please let me know.

Diocesan Convention Delegates:   Jeanne Jurgens, Kirk Bone, Matt Fitch, Sue Clark, Mary Hustler, Grant Bakewell, Kira Christianson, Tori Beck, Rod Thomas, Eleanor Tamaguchi, and Cheri Meadows.

Diocesan Convention Alternates:  Susan Hotchkiss, Mary Paré and Curry Mayer
The senior warden is an ex-officio delegate to Diocesan Convention.

My remarks were centered on my belief that we have entered a time of strengthening and stability.  I spoke about the three priorities that surfaced in our survey last year and ways of addressing them.  You can see my comments here:

Chris Tzimanatos presented a narrative budget that breaks our budget into the five different areas of ministry:  Worship, Serve, Learn, Care and Connect.  His presentation is here.

Pat Ronne, our treasurer, gave a robust presentation on our financial situation. You can see it here.

One important aspect of our financial situation is our pledges.  At the time of the annual meeting, we were almost $60,000 below our budgeted amount for pledges.  We had received $936,895 in pledges and our budget calls for $995,000.  The vestry has asked everybody who pledged to consider raising their pledge by 5%.   To put this request in perspective, a 5% increase of a $5,000 annual pledge is $21 per month.  Vestry members raised their pledges from 5% to 25% for a total increase of over $5,000.  At the annual meeting we received another $10,000 in pledge increases or new pledges.  So, by the end of the annual meeting, our pledge deficit shrunk from $60,000 to $45,000.  Members of the stewardship committee will be communicating the need for this increase to the wider congregation.

Follow this link to see the full Annual Report.

The meeting ended with the Dean's Award being presented to Susan Wilson, Vaughn Wolff and Nelson Lucas and the introduction of Kevin Donohue as the Senior Warden.

I feel so blessed to be Dean of Trinity Cathedral and I look forward to a great 2015.

Blessings,
Brian

Family Promise

Family Promise is Looking for Volunteers!

Our Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, March 1. We need volunteers throughout the week for the following tasks: preparing dinner; hosting either in the evening or overnight; fixing breakfast on Saturday morning; laundering bedding after the families leave on March 8, and tow the Family Promise trailer to the next host church, First United Methodist.

If you want to know more about the tasks needed for this important ministry, there is a handout available at the church office. You can also contact Eleanor Taniguchi, the Family Promise coordinator at Trinity, via email at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295 after 6 p.m.

Signing up is easy! There's a Family Promise sign-up poster in the office hallway just outside of the door to the Great Hall. Just add your name and contact information next to the hour and task you want to volunteer for. Thank you!

Floyd School News...

Monday, March 2 is National Reading Day and Dr. Seuss Birthday.

To celebrate his birthday we are asking everyone to come read your favorite children's book to a class or two at Floyd School. The school is open from 9:00 to 3:00 pm. You can choose the grade you would like to read to and you can choose the time. I am hoping to have enough readers for all day.You can sign up in the Great Hall between services and after the 11:15 service.  It should be a fun day! Thank you for helping.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

There are several small groups that meet on Thursday evening.  If you would like to see the full list of  groups that are offered follow this link

Begins on Friday - February 27th at 7:30pm

All are invited this Lenten season to come to the Cathedral and walk the fourteen Stations of the Cross on Friday evenings at 7:30pm.  Such a pilgrimage has been part of our Christian practice dating back to St. Francis of Assisi.   The practice of walking the Stations is intended to assist us in making a pilgrimage of prayer and meditation on the significant moments of Christ's passion beginning with his trial and ending with his burial in the tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.  It is a tender and haunting journey and not for the faint of heart.  The liturgy takes about 30 min. and is a poignant way to recall Christ's final journey of love.

Benefit Organ concert with Canon Link

The Trinity Cathedral Music Series presents Cathedral organist David Link in a benefit pipe organ concert on Sunday, March 8th at 4:00 pm.

The concert is a benefit for NorCal AIDS Cycle, a 330 mile/4 day bike ride which raises funds for local agencies serving those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Many of these agencies also provide prevention and testing services, to help stem the tide of this entirely preventable disease. So in addition to pedaling his bike three-hundred and thirty-miles, Canon Link will be playing the organ pedals to raise funds for NCAC, on Trinity Cathedral's recently restored pipe organ.

David Link recently celebrated his thirtieth year as Canon Musician at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and has participated in NorCal AIDS Cycle for the last five years. Canon Link rides in memory of Kenneth Piercy, a long time Trinity Cathedral Choir member who died from complications of AIDS in 2011.

The program will include: "Fantasia in G major (Piece d'Orgue)" by J.S.Bach, "Rondeau" by Henry Purcell, "Fantasie sur le Te Deum" by Charles Tournemire, and much more.

The suggested minimum donation for the concert is $10 at the door, though donations of any kind, large or small will be gratefully accepted! And if you are unable to attend the concert, but would still like to support the cause, just click this link to make a contribution!

Greetings from the Garden

by Eileen Harvey-Qualset

"In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt."   Margaret Atwood

On Saturday February 21, gardeners and volunteers began the community garden spring clean-up, and did we move dirt! Seven yards of planting soil was moved into the new raised bed planters, leaves were collected and bagged for use in composting, sand moved, and weeds were plucked.   We still need to collect more of the fallen leaves in the garden, so feel free to rake leaves into piles and we will get them bagged eventually.   We are contacting a landscape company to get more wood chips; they will come when available, so we will put out a call for help to get them out of the alley where they will be dumped and into the garden.

We have had a pretty good response from gardeners who want to continue with their plots. I'm fairly confident that come March 1, we will have open plots available. Please let your friends and neighbors know our community garden is open to the public to rent plots. Bill Maynard, Sacramento City's Community Garden Coordinator, indicated there are very few city-sponsored community garden plots available. I am creating signage to tell people how to contact us. Not my finest talent, but it will be good letting people know we are open.

Being in the garden is good for me. I am wonderfully reminded of God's abundance when I'm weeding. No matter how many I pull out, more sprout! If I clear a piece of ground, within weeks new growth is evident. This past fall I started all my vegetables with seeds, which I had never done before as I was afraid nothing would grow. My experience with weeds helped me get over my fear - if the weeds grow where their seeds fall, then the seeds I baby should do better. And they did. What a blessing that weeds can teach me to grow! Matthew Fox says that "..."blessing" is the theological word for "goodness." Meister Eckhart says "Goodness is the proper name of God the Creator." I sit on the cold ground, watch birds flying, and know deep in my heart that this life is good.
