Growing in Faith: The Rites of Lent

Jeanne Jurgens signing the Book of Enrollment.
During the 9:00 service this Sunday we will celebrate "The Rite of Enrollment." This rite is our affirmation that we continue to pray for those preparing for Baptism, Confirmation or Reaffirmation of Faith at the Easter Vigil on April 4. The candidates in turn, sign their names in the Book of Enrollment as a sign that they are ready to lead us through Lent on this journey to accepting or renewing our Baptismal Covenant (see the BCP, p 304 ff) And, equally important, we, the congregation, affirm our support for both candidates and sponsors as they continue this Christian faith journey. For most, the journey began years ago but has been formalized this year in "Growing in Faith" or in youth confirmation classes. Growing in Faith will continue until Pentecost, May 24.

This year Christine Chartrand and John Carlson are preparing

Blessing of the Candidates.
baptism. MeriAngel Enriquez, Michael Donnoe and several youth are candidates for confirmation. Martha Harding, Susan Hotchkiss, Lisa McCandless, Nancy Stoltz and Kathy Twibell are preparing to reaffirm their faith. Each candidate has a sponsor who has been on this journey with them.

At Trinity, the catechumenate or "Growing in Faith" group meets every Sunday afternoon. The meetings are simple but powerful. We reflect on the Gospel passage that is proclaimed on Sunday and how the message in that passage impacts our lives. Lent is a time of more intense focus on the meaning of our baptismal covenant. The Growing in Faith participants actually started their Lenten preparation a bit earlier than most of us. They went on retreat last weekend to focus on the Apostles' Creed. They met this last Sunday evening to hang and pray the Stations of the Cross.

Those preparing for Baptism have led the Church through Lent for centuries. Recent liturgical reforms have brought back many of our practices related to the celebration of baptism. We have associated preparation for confirmation, reception into the Episcopal Church and reaffirmation of faith with these catechumenate practices.

On March 15 and March 22 we will say prayers of blessing over the candidates. Please continue to keep them and their sponsors in your prayers through Lent.

Back Snack Program

Donations of the following foods are needed for our Back Snack program and for the After School Tutoring and Polynesian Dance program. Trinity serves about 15 families each week with a bag of food to tide them over the weekend. We put peanut Peanut Butter butter, a loaf of bread, oatmeal packets, granola bars, fruit cups, Raman soup and macaroni and cheese box for each family. Donations of these items are needed all during the school year. We are also in need of some volunteers who can pack up the bags on Friday afternoon from 1:45 until 3:00. Usually you work about once a month. There is a team of about 3 people who meet to put the bags together. Please contact Dale Reinhard, 916-730-0741 or dale.reinhard@gmail.com, if you can help.

The After School tutoring  and Polynesian Dance program needs granola bars or other handy snacks for about forty children.

If shopping is difficult a monetary donation is very helpful. Please write checks to Trinity Cathedral and put Floyd School in the memo line. All food donations can be placed in the barrels at the top of the stairs above the church office.

Thank you for your support.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

Matthew Fox to Speak at Trinity

Friday, February 20 at 7pm

Fox has written 30 books that have sold millions of copies and by the mid-1990s had attracted a huge and diverse following.  He will be speaking on his book entitled "Original Blessing" which refutes Augustine's view of Original Sin.  Fox argues that before there was ever sin (i.e. the eating of the apple), there was and is always blessing:  "And God said, it was good."  Fox is the first of a speaker's series that the Cathedral is launching.  The Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson, our Adult Ministries Director, is excited to report that Fox's speaking engagement will launch a six week small group series [follow this link to read more about the small group series] that church members and the community can sign up for to dive deeper into this theme of blessing during the season of Lent.  Fox is an intriguing speaker because he was formerly a member of the Dominican Order within the Roman Catholic Church.  He became a priest in the Episcopal Church following his expulsion from the order in 1993, by Cardinal Ratzinger due to his challenging of the Vatican's status quo. We invite you all to attend this inspiring event and individuals will have the opportunity to sign up for a small group experience to explore their faith in a safe setting.  The cost is $12 and the doors will open at 6:30pm with a jazz pianist in the sanctuary.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time in the Cathedral bookshop.

Seating is limited so be sure to purchase your tickets early.  See you all then! To learn more about Matthew Fox please visit his website.

Benefit Organ concert with Canon Link

The Trinity Cathedral Music Series presents Cathedral organist David Link in a benefit pipe organ concert on Sunday, March 8th at 4:00 pm.

The concert is a benefit for NorCal AIDS Cycle, a 330 mile/4 day bike ride which raises funds for local agencies serving those suffering from HIV/AIDS. Many of these agencies also provide prevention and testing services, to help stem the tide of this entirely preventable disease. So in addition to pedaling his bike three-hundred and thirty-miles, Canon Link will be playing the organ pedals to raise funds for NCAC, on Trinity Cathedral's recently restored pipe organ.

David Link recently celebrated his thirtieth year as Canon Musician at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, and has participated in NorCal AIDS Cycle for the last five years. Canon Link rides in memory of Kenneth Piercy, a long time Trinity Cathedral Choir member who died from complications of AIDS in 2011.

The program will include: "Fantasia in G major (Piece d'Orgue)" by J.S.Bach, "Rondeau" by Henry Purcell, "Fantasie sur le Te Deum" by Charles Tournemire, and much more.

The suggested minimum donation for the concert is $10 at the door, though donations of any kind, large or small will be gratefully accepted! And if you are unable to attend the concert, but would still like to support the cause, just click this link to make a contribution!

Greetings from the Garden

by Eileen Harvey-Qualset

This Saturday is a big day in Trinity's Community Garden! Gardeners, would-be gardeners and volunteers are coming to help us with a much needed spring cleanup. We will be filling in the new raised-bed plots that were assembled in October.   And here is my guilty secret about the new raised-bed plots....Morel Mushrooms.   Yes, that's right, these wonderful, expensive and rare mushrooms sprouted right up in two of the half-filled beds. Anyone could have seen and picked them if they peeked into the beds. I didn't tell anyone except Vaughn Wolff and my son-in-law, the mushroom hunter par excellence.   They were delicious! I am drying some for later use and to share with Vaughn.  This once in a life-time harvest doesn't change the rule that gardeners don't pick each other's harvest without permission.

Are you still trying to decide what to grow this year? The Sacramento Master Gardeners has a planting schedule on their website: http://ucanr.edu/sites/sacmg/files/117117.pdf . They also have tip sheets about growing melons, beets, sweet potatoes and other vegetables in the Sacramento region. My beets were not as large this year as I would have liked so I'm going to see what I can do encourage their growth. http://ucanr.edu/sites/sacmg/Growing_beets/

Trinity Community gardeners are invited to participate in Trinity Cathedral's Lenten group discussions, using Matthew Fox's book "Original Blessing". We will be meeting six Wednesday mornings at 10 am, beginning February 25, in Classroom I in the Parish Hall, but hope to move out to the garden as the weather allows. All are welcome and you do not need to have read or buy the book. If you do want to buy it, the Trinity Bookshop just received an order, along with other books he has authored.

Our garden is many things to many people: exercise, physical and spiritual sustenance, a quiet retreat. Martin Luther was known to say "God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars." May your time in the garden be blessed.
