"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

This past Sunday I preached a sermon that concluded with a short meditation practice. In the days since then, I have been overwhelmed and excited about the responses from many of you. Some seasoned meditation and centering prayer practitioners shared stories about how this life practice has been centering and transformative for them. Others expressed their interest in meditation coupled with their struggle to start or sustained practice. Additionally, several life-long Episcopalians expressed awe about what came up for them in the short practice. In all their experience with church they had never had the opportunity to sit in this way, to be present with their breath, and come to know the great power of simply being.

It has been such a joy to engage in these conversations not only to hear people's stories, but to also reflect on the larger connections and longings that I sense in this community. I hear similar stories and longings from many including young adults during Tuesday night gatherings, from high school youth at camp and on service weekends, and from faithful weekday Eucharist worshippers. From seasoned practitioners to those who have never maintained a long term spiritual practice like meditation, people are longing to engage in centering practices that bring grounding in an uncertain world.

I sense that these stories and experiences need a larger conversation. The Rev. Kathy Hopner and I are eager to host a community of practice where people can come together to discuss and experience spiritual practice on the personal and communal level. If this invitation resonates, please join an initial gathering for simple meditation practice and conversation on the first Sunday in Lent at 5pm in the Assembly Area.

On a different note, before we get to Lent, I would like to extend another invitation. On Friday February 13th, you are warmly invited to a Mardi Gras Potluck Dinner Church celebration. The gathering is a casual encounter with prayer, Eucharist, and conversation all centered around a shared potluck meal. This gathering is especially family friendly with interactive art and music. The celebration starts at 6:30pm in the Assembly Area. I hope to see you there.

With excitement and joy for the things to come,

Megan+

Family Promise

Family Promise is Looking for Volunteers!

Our Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, March 1. We need volunteers throughout the week for the following tasks: preparing dinner; hosting either in the evening or overnight; fixing breakfast on Saturday morning; laundering bedding after the families leave on March 8, and tow the Family Promise trailer to the next host church, First United Methodist.

Family Promise is a national program that transitions homeless families into stable housing and jobs. This is a very successful ministry in which Trinity plays a key role. As a host church, Trinity provides overnight shelter for one week, three times a year for up to four families. After a day of attending school, job training, and counseling, the families come to the Great Hall at 5 p.m. to eat dinner, relax, and get ready for the next day. Your presence on one of the seven evenings can provide warmth to friends who have undergone trauma and loss.

If you want to know more about the tasks needed for this important ministry, there is a handout available at the church office. You can also contact Eleanor Taniguchi, the Family Promise coordinator at Trinity, via email at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com, or phone 916-708-4295 after 6 p.m.

Signing up is easy! There's a Family Promise sign-up poster in the office hallway just outside of the door to the Great Hall. Just add your name and contact information next to the hour and task you want to volunteer for. Thank you!

Safe Ground

Trinity Cathedral's Safe Ground Pilgrimage ministry has a NEW e-mail system through Constant Contact for Safe Ground, which will expand this year to cover other outreach ministries as well. We are very excited about this update, and hope that you will consider joining our e-mail list through THIS LINK.

If you have any questions, or would like to volunteer for Safe Ground, please contact the Trinity Safe Ground coordinator, Michael Donnoe, at mdonnoe@gmail.com, or via cell at 916-992-3196.

Military Veterans

My ministry at Trinity is to develop and support our veterans.  Now that the holidays are over and things are settling down a bit I would like to start by gathering information for a Veterans Roster of name, address, phone, rank, branch of service, years of service, combat years. After the Roster is developed I would like to begin home visits for those who would enjoy that or are not able to travel and eventually having a scheduled weekly time for veterans to gather and visit with each other.

Please submit your roster information by email at diana.turner15@yahoo.com

Blessings,
The Rev. Diana Turner

Floyd School News...

Back Snack Program

Donations of the following foods are needed for our Back Snack program and for the After School Tutoring and Polynesian Dance program.

Trinity serves about 15 families each week with a bag of food to tide them over the weekend. We put  Peanut Butter peanut butter, a loaf of bread, oatmeal packets, granola bars, fruit cups, Raman soup and a macaroni and cheese box for each family. Donations of these items are needed all during the school year. We are also in need of some volunteers who can pack up the bags on Friday afternoon from 1:45 until 3:00. Usually you work about once a month. There is a team of about 3 people who meet to put the bags together. Please contact Dale Reinhard, 916-730-0741 or dale.reinhard@gmail.com, if you can help.

The After School Tutoring  and Polynesian Dance programs need granola bars or other handy snacks for about forty children.

If shopping is difficult a monetary donation is very helpful. Please write checks to Trinity Cathedral and put "Floyd School" on the memo line. All food donations can be placed in the barrels at the top of the stairs above the church office.

Thank you for your support.

Blessings,
Canon Nancy Tennyson

Choral Evensong and Candlemas Procession
Thursday, February 5 at 6:00 pm

Celebrated since the fourth century, the Feast of the Presentation of our Lord, commemorates the journey of Jesus family to the temple, forty days after his birth, according to Jewish custom. St Luke recounts their encounter with the elderly Simeon, who tells Mary and Joseph that their son is the "light to lighten the gentiles, and glory of his people Israel." For hundreds of years, a candle-lit procession symbolizing that "light" became a part of the celebration, and the feast has come to be known in many places as "Candlemas."

On February 5th the Trinity Cathedral Choir will sing our monthly service of Choral Evensong, preceded by a Candlemas procession from the Cathedral courtyard. The service will include music by John Sanders and Charles V. Stanford, and the anthem "There Shall a Star" by Felix Mendelssohn.

Please join us for this beautiful and unique service!

Ushers
Ushers greeting a parishioner.

Meets in Room A at 10:15am

Ushers are critical for ensuring that all of Trinity Cathedral's members and visitors feel welcomed and comfortable.

Recently, the ushers have been requested to alter some of our long-standing protocols, which may have caused some confusion. Dean Baker will meet with the ushers at 10:15 (in the break between the 9:00 and 11:15 services) to go over the new protocols and to answer any questions.

If you are not currently an usher, but have an interest in exploring this welcoming ministry, please join us!

If you are unable to attend, but have questions, please send them to KFDSAC@att.net.   We will make sure we get an answer circulated to everyone.

Thanks,
Kevin Donohue

Tradition of Covering All Crosses

On Shrove Tuesday, February 17 beginning at 4:00pm, we will be veiling all the crosses in the church as we prepare for Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  ALL are welcome to come and help.

The practice seems to have originated in ancient times when it was deemed proper to veil images of Christ, covering his glory during the season that focuses on his suffering and death.  In time it became the custom to veil the cross, for the cross is the sign of his glory.  The practice makes a startling transformation of the church and helps us focus single-mindedly on the Passion of Our Lord.  The veiling in the color purple provides an austere quality that reminds us that Lent is a time of fasting and completion.

After we've veiled the crosses, stay and enjoy a Pancake Supper.  Traditionally, it is the day that Christians prepare for Lent by eating up all of the fat and sweets in their homes.

Matthew Fox to Speak at Trinity

Friday, February 20 at 7pm

Fox has written 30 books that have sold millions of copies and by the mid-1990s had attracted a huge and diverse following.  He will be speaking on his book entitled "Original Blessing" which refutes Augustine's view of Original Sin.  Fox argues that before there was ever sin (i.e. the eating of the apple), there was and is always blessing:  "And God said, it was good."  Fox is the first of a speaker's series that the Cathedral is launching.  The Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson, our Adult Ministries Director, is excited to report that Fox's speaking engagement will launch a six week small group series [follow this link to read more about the small group series] that church members and the community can sign up for to dive deeper into this theme of blessing during the season of Lent.  Fox is an intriguing speaker because he was formerly a member of the Dominican Order within the Roman Catholic Church.  He became a priest in the Episcopal Church following his expulsion from the order in 1993, by Cardinal Ratzinger due to his challenging of the Vatican's status quo. We invite you all to attend this inspiring event and individuals will have the opportunity to sign up for a small group experience to explore their faith in a safe setting.  The cost is $12 and the doors will open at 6:30pm with a jazz pianist in the sanctuary.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time in the Cathedral bookshop.

Seating is limited so be sure to purchase your tickets early.  See you all then! To learn more about Matthew Fox please visit his website.
