Generosity & Gratitude

In 2 Corinthians 9, the Bible says: "The point is this: whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows bountifully will also reap bountifully. Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver."

I am overwhelmed with the generosity of the Trinity Cathedral community and grateful for the many gifts of time, talent, and treasure in our Church.   We are truly bountiful givers - at last count, we have raised almost $900,000 in pledges, close to our goal of $995,000 and we still have almost a month until the Annual Meeting.

On behalf of the entire Vestry, I would like to thank everyone that has already pledged for 2015 and encourage anyone who is considering a pledge to prayerfully decide what is right in your heart and give cheerfully.   If you would like to make or increase your pledge for 2015, you can call the church office at 916-446-2513, pick up a pledge form around the church, or enter your pledge online by clicking the "Pledge Form for 2015" at the top of our website at www.trinitycathedral.org.

Facilitator: The Rev. Randy Knutson

Drawing from experiences, photographs and video from his January 2014 Pilgrimage to the Holy Land with Bishop Beisner and members of our Diocese, Rev. Randy Knutson will present a class focusing on Jesus' time in Galilee and a book by one of the speakers they heard on the Pilgrimage.

The first half of the class will be timely, covering sites mentioned in the Gospel texts for the Sundays in Epiphany of 2015. The second half of the class will focus on a new book by Mitri Raheb, Faith in the Face of Empire: The Bible Through Palestinian Eyes; whose ministry in Bethlehem they visited last year.

Spirit Flow Yoga or Soul Fired Yoga

Trans 101 

Bring your honest questions and your open mind and heart to this series of six facilitated presentations, addressing various aspects of the transgender experience in a spiritual setting.  We will explain terms, share stories, and together, come to an even deeper understanding of what it means for an institution, church, or group to be radically inclusive. The following topics are scheduled (but are subject to change) for the class: Let's start at the very beginning, The Episcopal Church's Response to transgender individuals, Parents and Friends, Gender Identity and Youth, Schools and Transgender Youth, Transgender Military life. Vaughn Wolff will facilitate this group using The Basic Principles of the Science of Mind by Dr. Frederick Bailes to guide us. We will read from the book and discuss personal experiences with prayer and healing.

Small Groups Forming

In a recent survey conducted at the Cathedral, there was a high level of interest for small group ministry.  As a result, during the season of Lent, Trinity Cathedral is going to have a six-week small group series that will begin the week of February 22nd through to Holy Week.  We are basing the six-week series on Matthew Fox's book "Original Blessings".  Matthew Fox will launch the six weeks with his speaking engagement of Friday, February 20th at 7pm.  The small groups will begin the following week and you and your friends and the larger community are invited to participate!  Small groups will be available varying days and times of the week.  You can check out what is available at the sign up table in the Great Hall on the Sundays of February 1, 8 and 15.  If you are not able to come to attend these Sundays then please call the church office to find out which groups are still open.  We will also have the days and times listed for the small groups on the church website, but you will still need to sign up in person or over the phone.  It is our hope that everyone in the church will participate in this exciting program!  If you have any questions, please contact Rev. Board Game Night

Mark your calendars! It's almost Board Game Night again! Everyone is invited to join in and have some fun! The games have been great fun and we are all looking forward to February 6th to have another go! We've played a lot of different games, but didn't get around to a whole stack of others. Pick what you enjoy playing and start a game; we don't all have to play the same one. We can make coffee or you can bring your own beverages. Folks have brought snacks for themselves and to share - it's up to you! We meet in the Great Hall from 6:30-8:30 (and may stay later, if there's a hot game in the works!). Ushers are critical for ensuring that all of Trinity Cathedral's members and visitors feel welcomed and comfortable.

Recently, the ushers have been requested to alter some of our long-standing protocols, which may have caused some confusion. Dean Baker will meet with the ushers at 10:15 (in the break between the 9:00 and 11:15 services) to go over the new protocols and to answer any questions. If you are not currently an usher, but have an interest in exploring this welcoming ministry, please join us!

If you are unable to attend, but have questions, please send them to KFDSAC@att.net.   We will make sure we get an answer circulated to everyone.

Tradition of Covering All Crosses

On Shrove Tuesday, February 17, we will be veiling all the crosses in the church as we prepare for Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent.  ALL are welcome to come and help.

The practice seems to have originated in ancient times when it was deemed proper to veil images of Christ, covering his glory during the season that focuses on his suffering and death.  In time it became the custom to veil the cross, for the cross is the sign of his glory.  The practice makes a startling transformation of the church and helps us focus single-mindedly on the Passion of Our Lord.  The veiling in the color purple provides an austere quality that reminds us that Lent is a time of fasting and completion.

After we've veiled the crosses, stay and enjoy a Pancake Supper.  Traditionally, it is the day that Christians prepare for Lent by eating up all of the fat and sweets in their homes.

Trinity Cathedral's Men's Group is sponsoring the Shrove Tuesday/Mardi Gras Shindig on February 17.   Be prepared to have the best gourmet pancakes and New Orleans red beans and rice ya'll ever had. The whole family can eat for a paltry $12 or $5 per person (really??? YES really). Come on down. The party starts at 5:30 and ends at 7:00pm sharp in the Great Hall. Get there early before all the gators eat everything up. 

Matthew Fox to Speak at Trinity

Fox has written 30 books that have sold millions of copies and by the mid-1990s had attracted a huge and diverse following.  He will be speaking on his book entitled "Original Blessing" which refutes Augustine's view of Original Sin.  Fox argues that before there was ever sin (i.e. the eating of the apple), there was and is always blessing:  "And God said, it was good."  Fox is the first of a speaker's series that the Cathedral is launching.  Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson, our Adult Ministries Director, is excited to report that Fox's speaking engagement will launch a six week small group series that church members and the community can sign up for to dive deeper into this theme of blessing during the season of Lent.  Fox is an intriguing speaker because he was formerly a member of the Dominican Order within the Roman Catholic Church.  He became a priest in the Episcopal Church following his expulsion from the order in 1993, by Cardinal Ratzinger due to his challenging of the Vatican's status quo. We invite you all to attend this inspiring event and individuals will have the opportunity to sign up for a small group experience to explore their faith in a safe setting.  The cost is $12 and the doors will open at 6:30pm with a jazz pianist in the sanctuary.  Tickets can be purchased ahead of time in the Cathedral bookshop.

Rare Fine Art Bible

Trinity Cathedral is pleased to announce a program featuring The Saint John's Bible Heritage Edition. Brad Neary, Heritage Program Director, will provide a presentation on The Saint John's Bible project. One of the seven Heritage Edition volumes, Gospels and Acts, will be on display during the session.
