2014 Christmas Pageant

What an amazing Christmas celebration we just had!  The flowers, greens, music, liturgy, pageants and receptions were spectacular.  I am grateful for all who worked so hard to make the services glorious.  One of the things that was different this year is we had a pageant at the 9:00am service on the 3rd Sunday of Advent.  This allowed our families that were going to be away over Christmas to participate in a pageant.  We had two additional pageants on Christmas Eve.  At all of the pageants any child who wanted to could participate - even if it was their first time coming to Trinity.  The Rev. Kathy Hopner did a remarkable job  incorporating new children into the program.  You can see some of the pictures from the pageant here:  https://www.flickr.com/photos/110539556@N07/sets/72157649549692747/

Now we are in to 2015 and looking toward a new year together.  Personally I am looking at significant changes in my household as Andrea begins working full-time at Faith Church in Cameron Park and my son Mark will be graduating from high school and moving out of the house to attend the West Point Prep School at West Point, New York.  We are also adjusting to the new member of our family, Zac, the service dog Andrea brought with her when she returned from her deployment to Afghanistan.  He was part of Puppies Behind Bars, a program that trains prison inmates to raise service dogs.  While most dogs are given to wounded warriors, Zac was sent to Andrea to help her in her ministry as a Chaplain.  As you might expect, he was a huge hit with the soldiers who were missing home.  Zac now lives with us and he will continue to be a part of Andrea's ministry and our family.

I look forward to our partnership in ministry as we see what Christ has in store for us as a congregation in 2015.

Advent - Christmas

Thank You!

Dear Trinity Cathedral,

You don't know what you did this December but it was phenomenal!

Polynesian Dance Program:

Thank you to Annette Bradden-Walker, Mary Hall, Mary Hustler, Monica May, Sheri Wiley, Susan Forde, Kelly Catlett, Nancy Tennyson and Sue Clark who made 25 costumes for the Polynesian Dance Program.

Thank you to Randy Cheek, Per Ostlund, Kevin Sanders, Paul Brosio and Rob Stoinoff who prepared a wonderful pasta dinner for 200 people.

Thank you to Matt Fitch, Jackie and Bill McGrath, John and Nancy Tennyson for serving at the dinner for the Dance program.

The program was a great success, the children looked great but the best part was to see Leatatta Floyd dance with her students, her nephews and she did a dance on her own. It was a proud evening for the Floyd School community. Thank you to all who participated.

Academic Showcase:

Thank you to those who attended the Academic Showcase at Floyd. As we all know you learn more when you are a teacher rather than the student. The Academic Showcase was the idea of Principal Eric Chapman. His plan was to have the students present their findings on investigation of their areas of study in nature to their parents and other adults. They had charts and displays used to explain what they had learned since September. For their first attempt it went very well. Mr. Chapman is planning another showcase in the spring and everyone is encouraged to come, listen and ask questions. I know one of our members gave some very helpful feedback to the staff.

Holiday Bag Project:

The Holiday Bag Project was a great success. Thank you to Mary Lynne Vellinga for chairing this project once again. We decorated, filled and delivered 330 bags to the students at Floyd School on Friday, December 19. The bags contained, a book, socks, toothbrush, holiday toys and some candy. Thanks to all who helped decorate the bags, the Sunday school classes, Gladys Hustler and Eleanor Taniguchi plus others.

Thank you to Cindy Nelson, Margo Hayes, Tim and Harry Kirn, and many others who helped fill the bags on December 14. Special thanks to those who delivered the bags to the school Candace Taylor, John Tennyson, Jennifer Myers, Josephine Hein, Randy Cheek and Dale Reinhard in the pouring rain. Extra Special thanks to Santa and his Elf who joined the volunteers to make the day more festive!

Family Christmas Gifts:

A BIG thank you to all who helped with the Floyd Family Christmas Gifts. This year we served 30 families who had combined 116 children. 60 parishioners gave toys, clothing and food for the families. Another 6 people picked up and delivered the gifts to the families in the pouring rain. Your efforts made Christmas very special for the children and their families.

I also want to thank: East Sacramento Bike Shop for helping us with bikes, helmets and locks for some children, Vic's Ice Cream for providing ice cream for the school events including the dinner, and the students of the Communications Department at Sacramento State University for providing socks, pajamas and peanut butter for our program. Please patronize East Sacramento Bike Shop and or Vic's Ice Cream whenever you can.

The Future:

It was a wonderful and very busy month. There will be more events coming up in the spring. We will need funds for field trips, books for the library and helpers with the Back Snack Program.

Right now we are in need of a Back Snack helper for the fourth Friday of the month. The job includes packing up the food for the children to pick up after school on Friday. You will be given instruction on what to do. You need to be at Floyd School at 1:45 and you are finished by 3:15. If you would like to help please contact Dale Reinhard at 916-730-0741 or dale.reinhard@gmail.com. You can give it a try once if you would like before you commit yourself every month.

Thank you to all of you.

What a Blessing it is to be at Trinity Cathedral!

THANK YOU for Fulfilling Your 2014 Pledge

Thank you for your pledge and payments for 2014!

Unfortunately the IRS does not let us post any further contributions to our 2014 statements.  Of course, we will always take contributions!  Further contributions given in 2015 will be reflected in your 2015 donation statements.  If you want a particular donation put towards your 2014 pledge, we can do that but, for IRS purposes, it will be considered a 2015 contribution.

Thank you for your continuing support of Trinity Cathedral!

Stewardship Campaign 2015 has begun!

As a Vestry member, I would like to share a secret with you. One which I bet many of you did not know.

People often think that Stewardship is just about collecting money to pay expenses (which is necessary, of course, but not very interesting. We all have expenses).  Here is the secret: Stewardship is really about laying the foundation which allows all of us to become closer to God!  Really?  (you are probably thinking). Yes, really and here are the details of what that means.

For every dollar Trinity collects in pledges:

31 cents goes to Worship - or how we connect with the Holy

29 cents goes to Learning - finding ways for us to know God

better

15 cents goes to Care - those ways we connect with the

needs of others (so we can be like Jesus!)

11 cents goes to opportunities to Serve - how we

participate in Good works (again like Jesus)

14 cents goes to Connecting - building relationships

with others at Trinity

All of those activities bring us closer to God!

Every $1 has big impact!  So, no pledge is too small.

The good news is that Trinity already has 241 pledges (as of 1/5/14), totaling $742,718!  We are well on our way to our goal of $995,000!

Thanks to all of those who have already pledged.  If you haven't pledged yet, please consider doing so.  (Now that you know the secret of specifically what your pledge is doing, that brings us all closer to God.)

Vestry Nominations

It is time for the members of Trinity Cathedral to select Vestry representatives, who discern the mission of the Cathedral today and in the future, and set goals and priorities to support its mission. The Vestry also is responsible for the Cathedral having the necessary funds, and necessary and appropriate physical assets, to accomplish its mission. Please consider this opportunity to serve.

Follow this link for the Cathedral's job description for a Vestry representative, and this link for the format to apply.

Contact Senior Warden Kevin Donohue at KFDSAC@att.net or Loren Weatherly at loren.weatherly@gmail.com if you have questions. Completed applications must be submitted to the Cathedral Office by January 19.

Military Veterans

My ministry at Trinity is to develop and support our veterans.  Now that the holidays are over and things are settling down a bit I would like to start by gathering information for a Veterans Roster of name, branch of service, years of service and contact information. After the Roster is developed I would like to begin home visits for those who would enjoy that or are not able to travel and eventually having a scheduled weekly time for veterans to gather and visit with each other.

Please submit your roster information by email at diana.turner15@yahoo.com

Blessings,

The first half of the class will be timely, covering sites mentioned in the Gospel texts for the Sundays in Epiphany of 2015. The second half of the class will focus on a new book by Mitri Raheb, Faith in the Face of Empire: The Bible Through Palestinian Eyes; whose ministry in Bethlehem they visited last year.

The following topics are scheduled (but are subject to change) for the class: Let's start at the very beginning, The Episcopal Church's Response to transgender individuals, Parents and Friends, Gender Identity and Youth, Schools and Transgender Youth, Transgender Military life. Guest speakers and facilitators will change each week. Check the website (trinitycathedral.org/learn/thursday-night-cathedral) for updates on topics and/or presenters.

E-Squared              Facilitator: Vaughn Wolff

"E-squared could best be described as a lab manual with simple experiments that prove reality is malleable, consciousness trumps matter, and you shape your life with your mind. Yes, you read that right. It says prove." From the back cover of E-squared, by Pam Grout, available in the Cathedral Bookshop. Drop-ins are welcome!

Growing in Faith: The Rite of Commitment

By Jerry Paré

2014 Rite of Commitment

During the 9:00 service this Sunday we will celebrate "The Rite of Commitment." This rite celebrates the first public statement of commitment that those participating in the Growing in Faith meetings make when they want to be baptized, confirmed or reaffirm their faith. It is their statement that they want to travel a path towards celebration of baptism, confirmation or reaffirmation of faith.   The candidates have sponsors who commit to journeying with them. And, equally important, we, the congregation, pledge our support for both candidates and sponsors as they make this Christian faith journey.

At Trinity the catechumenate (we call it "Growing in Faith") meets every week. The meetings are simple but powerful. We reflect on the Gospel passage that is proclaimed on Sunday and how the message in that passage impacts our lives. Because of the level of sharing that occurs, we ask for a commitment to the process from those seeking baptism, confirmation or reaffirmation of faith. If not committed now, then when? This is a real and serious question that candidates reflect on prior to standing before us for the Rite. It is a question that Jesus' disciples reflected on when they first decided to join him on his path to Jerusalem.

Growing in Faith is not always easy. In fact, all of us find ourselves called to seek answers to the questions faith puts before us. We are called to sacrifice. We are called to service. But we are also called to new life and celebration. This is what "Growing in Faith" is about. This is what candidates commit themselves to. This is what we invite each of you to participate in not only during the Rite of Commitment but throughout the coming months by praying for our candidates, sponsors and the leadership team.

Christmas Fair a Resounding Success

Trinity's Christmas Fair, organized by TREE, was a great success this year-vendors said it was the best year ever, so thank you to all who attended and bought beautiful, hand made gifts for your families and friends. Charities and non-profits all did well, and all said they enjoyed coming to Trinity because we are friendly, helpful, and reliable. Quite a few people came from outside the church, too, having seen the banner and our publicity.

Matthew Fox coming to town!

TREE is delighted that Matthew Fox is coming and we hope everyone will buy tickets to his talk on February 20th. Tickets are for sale in the bookshop and his books are there. Kay Kosinski-Duren has bequeathed her collection of his magazine Creation Spirituality, which will be in the book shop on the free trolley. Good reading, still pertinent after many years, by various excellent writers. Take a few home with you and browse.

Reminder: our water shortage is not over - see photos of Folsom Lake - bare and dry. Please continue to conserve water in your homes and businesses.
