"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
       Brian Baker

Trinity Cathedral has been blessed with a remarkably dedicated staff who have, in many cases, served the Cathedral for decades.  We are who we are because of the legacy created by people like Canon Winnie Gaines and Canon Grant Carey.  Some of our staff are still shaping their legacy, like Canon David Link who has just celebrated his 30th anniversary as the leader of our music programs.

Nancy Tennyson retired last year from her position as director of our family and youth ministries.  She served in that capacity for 20 years and has had a profound impact on our congregation.  Fortunately she is still part of the congregation and is now volunteering in our outreaching department, leading our work at Floyd School.

At Nancy's retirement we launched an effort to renovate the Nursery in her honor.  Ruth Fitch offered to lead the project and many people, including men from the Men's Group, worked on it.  I am pleased to announce that the project is completed and the Nursery will be dedicated this Sunday at 10:15.

At the conclusion of the 9:00 service, the procession will lead the congregation to the courtyard where we will offer prayers of blessing and we will thank Nancy for her ministry.  The nursery will be open so people can peek in and see how lovely it is.  Thank you Ruth and all the many others who made this renovation possible, and thank you Nancy for your selfless and loving service.

If you would like to contribute to the project in honor of Nancy's ministry, you can write a check with "nursery" written on the memo line.

Blessings,

Thank You to Cheri Meadows

and

Announcing an Opportunity for Service

By The Rev. Steve Skiffington, Cathedral Deacon

Thank you Cheri!

All ministries have changes and cycles. In her role as the coordinator Safe Ground Pilgrimage Program here at Trinity, Cheri Meadows has overseen the many volunteers who make Safe Ground nights at the Cathedral such a blessing to our brothers and sisters who are without homes. This ministry has been enormously successful under Cheri's leadership. In 2013, we served meals to over 4,000 people. As 2014 draws to a close, we on our way to reaching - and probably exceeding - 5,000! Cheri has fine-tuned our system whereby this is all possible. At the end of this month (October), she will be stepping out of the coordinator's role to have more family time. We wish her well and give thanks for her ministry. Happily, Cheri is not leaving Trinity and we look forward to continuing to be blessed with her energy and spirit. Well done, good and faithful servant! (Matthew 25:21)

Announcing an Opportunity for Service!

Cheri's stepping down as coordinator for Safe Ground Pilgrimage here at the Cathedral, offers an opportunity for a parishioner to carry on this fine work. One of the gifts Cheri left us is an amazingly simple, yet effective, system designed to make the Safe Ground Pilgrimage nights possible at the Cathedral. The following is a listing of the skills needed to be the coordinator as well as an outline of the system.

OVERVIEW OF JOB:

This is a job that can be done from home.  While Cheri has usually dropped by on most Safe Ground nights to see how it's all going, that is not necessary to the essentials of the job. Both Ronnie Vaughn and I are normally present during Safe Ground nights as the eyes and ears of the Cathedral to ensure a safe and orderly operation.

Both Cheri and I will work with the new coordinator to enable a smooth transition. Like Cheri, the new coordinator will have direct access to me at all times. My job as deacon is to support all coordinators of the various Outreach Ministries.

SKILLS:

  • Good time management: Keep an eye on the calendar and send out notices in a timely manner.

  • Good people skills: Interact with volunteers and staff (particularly our Building Manager, Dana Chamness).

  • Work without direct supervision: While all outreach ministries are under the overview of the deacon, outreach ministers normally work on their own or in teams.

  • Managing large e-mail data base: Adding names and removing names of Safe Ground volunteers when requested.

  • Writing: Creating notices of needs for Safe Ground nights.

FLOW OF WORK:

  • Using E-mail data base, send out notice of needs one week prior to hosting Safe Ground nights.
  • Monitor responses.

  • After a Safe Ground night send out a thank you to the data base noting how many were served and thanking the volunteers by name.

If this area of ministry calls to you, please contact me and we can talk it over. Many thanks for considering it.

thanksgiving-illustration.jpg A Thanksgiving Thank You

Many Thank You's to all who came to share in the 4th Annual Community Thanksgiving meal...I am beyond grateful to Trinity for their willingness to donate all the food for our Thanksgiving meal which fed 60 to 75 people and I am incredibly delighted by those who arrived to spend their day helping to prepare the banquet to feed those 60 to 75 people and then to help in cleaning up...I believe it was a most wonderful day that showed the abundance - not of food - but of community and communion - as what Thanksgiving should be. Thank you - thanks in giving...  Tracy

Friday, December 12
at 7:30 pm

"NATIVUS: interpreting the Saga through song" will feature a program of carols and music to carry us through the journey of Mary and Joseph. Artistic director Tracia Barbieri has developed a reputation for original and creative programming. This choral drama portrays 14th-century carols alongside premiere works composed expressly for this production, and spotlights rich refrains of long-ago times and far-reaching cultures.

VAE sets the stage for an imaginative journey in which choral music, narration, and haunting tableaux depict a blessed event that travels through tragedy and triumph. Narration by Adam Sartain of the Davis Musical Theater Company.

Please come and enjoy this stop on our Advent pilgrimage. Suggested donation at the door $6-20.

The Presiding Bishop on

President's immigration plan

[November 21, 2014] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following statement on President Obama's recently announced immigration policies:

Together with families and communities across the United States, I give thanks for President Obama's announcement that nearly five million undocumented immigrants will soon be eligible for relief from the threat of deportation. Too many families have lived for too long continually worried about parents being separated from children, wage-earners and caregivers from those who depend on them, and unable to participate fully in their communities and the nation's economy.  Permanent and comprehensive reform of our broken immigration system through congressional action is still urgently needed, but the President's action is a constructive step toward a system that honors the dignity and intrinsic value of every human being.  It will immediately strengthen our nation's communities by allowing immigrant families much fuller participation in American civic and economic life.

The Episcopal Church will work with Congressional leaders and the White House to press for implementation of the President's plan as quickly, fairly, and inclusively as possible.  The President's plan is not perfect.  Some deserving persons and families are excluded, meaning that additional work lies ahead.  All persons equally deserve the ability to pursue their dreams and contribute to their communities and families with liberty, dignity, and freedom.  I pray that the President's action will lead our nation toward a future in which those sacred possibilities are open to all.

Presiding Bishop's Statement on
the Way Forward from Ferguson

[November 25, 2014] Episcopal Church Presiding Bishop Katharine Jefferts Schori has issued the following statement on the way forward from Ferguson:

The Episcopal Church joins many others in deep lament over the tragic reality that continues to be revealed in Ferguson, Missouri. The racism in this nation is part of our foundation, and is not unique to one city or state or part of the country. All Americans live with the consequences of centuries of slavery, exploitation, and prejudice. That legacy continues to lead individuals to perceive threat from those who are seen as "other." The color of one's skin is often the most visible representation of what divides God's children one from another.

Michael Brown's death was and is a tragedy, and has become a powerful witness to those divisions between human beings in this nation. His death also carries the potential to become a sacramental offering - if it continues to challenge us to address our divisions and the injustices in this nation that are far more than skin deep.

This nation was founded with a vision for freedom, a vision that has required repeated challenges in order to move toward true liberty for all the people of this land. Christians understand the sacred vision of the Reign of God as a society of peace with justice for all. May the life and death of Michael Brown drive us toward reconciliation that will shake the foundations of this nation toward the justice for which we were all created. The Episcopal Church will continue to partner and push for racial reconciliation in Missouri and across this land. I ask you to stand with hands extended in love, to look for the image of God in every neighbor, and to offer yourself in vulnerability for the sake of reconciliation across this land. May we become instruments of God's peace and healing, made evident in communities of justice for all.
