"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
       Brian Baker

On Sunday night I had the pleasure of having dinner with members of Trinity Cathedral, Congregation B'nai Israel, the Salam Center and Capital Christian Center.  This was our second annual pre-Thanksgiving dinner.  It was a lovely opportunity to gather across faith differences and think about gratitude.  The program included a brief talk from Dr. Robert Emmons, a psychology professor at U.C. Davis who has dedicated his career to the study of gratitude.  There are two things I got from his talk.  First he reminded me of the power inherent in seeing the many ways in which we are blessed.  He spoke about the importance of working opportunities for gratitude into our daily lives.  The second insight was more significant.  Dr. Emmons  differentiated between gratitude that focuses on the self vs. gratitude that connects us with others.  He said that gratitude that focuses on the self, "I'm so grateful that I am so awesome," can isolate us from other people and actually lead to less happiness.  The more sustaining form of gratitude is the gratitude that connects us with others.  An example of this is gratitude for the many ways we depend on others  and have been blessed by others.  For example, today was trash day in my neighborhood.  Dr. Emmons talk reminded me to be grateful for the people who collect my trash, or work to produce the food I eat.

At Trinity Cathedral, there are so many ways I am blessed by others, this kind of gratitude is easy.  I am grateful for you and your partnership in ministry.

This Sunday we will all have an opportunity to express our gratitude through our pledge ingathering.  If you are able to come to church, please bring your pledge card.  If you can't come to church, you can mail it in or drop it off in the office.

Blessings,

Brian

Family Promise

Help Needed!

Family Promise is Looking for Volunteers!

Our Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, December 7 and will be staying overnight with us through Saturday, December 13. For each night, we need volunteers to take on just one task:

  • Preparing a meal (you can drop it off and another volunteer will heat it up if you like)

  • Hosting for the evening (serving dinner and making sure the families have what they need: an extra blanket, a glass of water, a couple of aspirin from the meds box that comes with the families, or games and toys for the children)

  • Staying overnight to make sure the families are comfortable and are up at 6 a.m. to eat breakfast and get ready for the Family Promise van to take them to school/job training or other tasks they need to get done that day. (If you've ever thought of running a B&B, this is great training.)

  • On Saturday morning, we need folks to fix breakfast for the families.

  • On Sunday, December 14, we need people to help pack the Family Promise trailer and haul it to the next church, St. Mark's UMC. We also need someone to wash the bedding, which can be done at Trinity (check out the newer washer and dryer in back of the kitchen!) or at home.

Hosts need to be at the Great Hall between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and stay until 8, when the overnight hosts arrive. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and yes, hosts are encouraged to eat with the families. Overnight hosts bring a sleeping bag or favorite blanket and pillow (we have cots) and sleep in the Great Hall. Trinity families are especially great at being hosts, so we encourage them to come meet the Family Promise families.

Please see the sign-up sheet in the office hallway just outside of the door to the Great Hall and add your name, or contact Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com

Cathedral Organ renovation update

The process of restoring and enhancing Trinity Cathedral's wonderful Reuter organ has begun. Built in 1983, the organ urgently needs repairs and deferred maintenance in order to protect and revive its soaring voice that has become a cornerstone of worship here.

This restoration process is planned in two major phases.

  • The first phase will provide much-needed TLC to the mechanics of the existing organ, repairing and replacing worn-out or otherwise-misbehaving pipes and infrastructure.

  • The second phase will complete the antiphonal division in the Narthex, providing a more balanced sound that will encourage and support congregational singing, especially in the rear one-third of the church. This addition was planned for in the original design of the organ thirty-two years ago.

With that in mind, here is an update on the progress of the project:

We are very happy to announce that sufficient funds have been paid or pledged to begin the first phase. We are about to sign contracts for that work to commence.

Meanwhile, Canon for Music David Link has been touring some sites around the country to evaluate possible materials and configurations for new and replacement pipes to build and enhance the sound.

This is an exciting point in the life of music ministry at the Cathedral! We will keep you apprised of progress, and will make you aware of ways that you can contribute to its success.

Thank you.

David Lindgren, Chair, Organ Restoration Committee

David Link, Canon for Music

Annual Transgender
Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil

Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 6:30 pm

at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral will host the annual interfaith candlelight vigil in observance of the 16th International Transgender Day of Remembrance. All are welcome.

Speakers:
  • Nick Gorton, MD, Lyon-Martin Health Services
  • Sage Fox, Capt. US Army Reserve, Transgender Rights Activist
  • Devon Marchant, Transgender Community Advocate

The Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The first memorial was a candlelight vigil in Boston in November 1999 to honor Rita Hester, murdered in 1998. Since then, annual memorials on this day have been observed around the world. This vigil will be dedicated to the memories of Carina Holleran, Carol Byers and Ruby Molina among our many brothers and sisters who have fallen to ignorance and intolerance.

Please join our reception after the memorial.

A Seasonal Meditational Experience

St Francis Church, 1066 26th Street (corner of K Street)

Welcome the Advent Season with this lovely ceremony. We will welcome the season of sacred waiting with a journey into the center where we will meet the light of Christ and bring it out to the world. This simple labyrinth is a picture of the kingdoms of the earth waking to the coming of the savior. We will walk the garden carrying a candle to light in the center, accompanied by our singing.

Be sure to dress warmly and, for reasons of fire safety, we ask that all wear trousers. No dresses or skirts please. In case of rain the Garden will be held in Brunsman Hall.

Please bring a flashlight, and a sweet or savory to share.

Suggested donation is $3.00
