"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
       Brian Baker

Tomorrow a dozen or so members of the Cathedral, and all of the clergy, will be driving to Santa Rosa for our annual Diocesan Convention.  This Convention will last through Saturday evening, allowing us to return home for church on Sunday.  We will consider a number of resolutions and elect people to serve on various boards in the Diocese.  Kirk Bone, former senior warden at Trinity, is a nominee for the diocesan Board of Trustees.  There is a resolution temporarily reducing the apportionment for churches that hire new program staff.  I submitted a resolution asking the General Convention of the Episcopal Church to authorize marriage rites for all couples throughout the church.

While the Diocesan Convention is a business meeting, much of what we will be doing transcends the "business" of passing resolutions or electing representatives.  Convention gives us the opportunity to participate in a Christian community that reminds us that the Body of Christ is bigger than our congregation at the Cathedral.   It is too easy to get focused on our parochial ministries and lose the connection with the wider church. Diocesan Convention is a family reunion of sorts, and I appreciate getting to see brothers and sisters of faith who labor in the vineyard of God's love throughout Northern California.

One aspect of Convention about which I am particularly grateful is the presence of our Bookshop.  Cherie Chamness and other volunteers pack up much of the inventory of the Bookshop and set up a temporary shop at Convention.  This is a service that is always appreciated by the Episcopalians who don't have access to a bookshop.  Thank you Cherie, Dana and the other volunteers that will make this possible.

There will also be displays and informational booths.  Jerry Pare will be setting up a table with information about the Cathedral.  Rod Thomas will be helping with an Integrity (LGBT ministries) Booth.

Please pray for us as we gather.  I look forward to returning and seeing you Sunday morning at Trinity if you are able to come to worship.

Blessings,

Brian

Family Promise

Help Needed!

Family Promise is Looking for Volunteers!

Our Family Promise families return to Trinity on Sunday, December 7 and will be staying overnight with us through Saturday, December 13. For each night, we need volunteers to take on just one task:

  • Preparing a meal (you can drop it off and another volunteer will heat it up if you like)

  • Hosting for the evening (serving dinner and making sure the families have what they need: an extra blanket, a glass of water, a couple of aspirin from the meds box that comes with the families, or games and toys for the children)

  • Staying overnight to make sure the families are comfortable and are up at 6 a.m. to eat breakfast and get ready for the Family Promise van to take them to school/job training or other tasks they need to get done that day. (If you've ever thought of running a B&B, this is great training.)

  • On Saturday morning, we need folks to fix breakfast for the families.

  • On Sunday, December 14, we need people to help pack the Family Promise trailer and haul it to the next church, St. Mark's UMC. We also need someone to wash the bedding, which can be done at Trinity (check out the newer washer and dryer in back of the kitchen!) or at home.

Hosts need to be at the Great Hall between 5 and 5:30 p.m. and stay until 8, when the overnight hosts arrive. Dinner is served at 6 p.m. and yes, hosts are encouraged to eat with the families. Overnight hosts bring a sleeping bag or favorite blanket and pillow (we have cots) and sleep in the Great Hall. Trinity families are especially great at being hosts, so we encourage them to come meet the Family Promise families.

Please see the sign-up sheet in the office hallway just outside of the door to the Great Hall and add your name, or contact Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com

Caregiver Support Group

Next meeting:

Wednesday, November 19, 10:30am

If you are caring for a family member or friend who has Alzheimer's or another dementia, you are at increased risk for stress and health problems. Taking care of yourself through learning about and taking advantage of services that can provide you support and respite is essential. Attending a caregiver support group is one way family caregivers can care for themselves.

Trinity is now hosting a support group on the third Wednesday of every month, from 10:30-12:00, in the upstairs conference room. The group will use materials provided by the Alzheimer's Association and will be facilitated by Jackie McGrath, a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and a former caregiver for her parents who had dementia. For more information contact Jackie (jackiewmcgrath@gmail.com, 712-6561).

Annual Transgender
Day of Remembrance Candlelight Vigil

Saturday, November 22, 2014, at 6:30 pm

at Trinity Episcopal Cathedral

Trinity Cathedral will host the annual interfaith candlelight vigil in observance of the 16th International Transgender Day of Remembrance. All are welcome.

Speakers:
  • Nick Gorton, MD, Lyon-Martin Health Services
  • Sage Fox, Capt. US Army Reserve, Transgender Rights Activist
  • Devon Marchant, Transgender Community Advocate

The Transgender Day of Remembrance memorializes those killed due to anti-transgender hatred or prejudice. The first memorial was a candlelight vigil in Boston in November 1999 to honor Rita Hester, murdered in 1998. Since then, annual memorials on this day have been observed around the world. This vigil will be dedicated to the memories of Carina Holleran, Carol Byers and Ruby Molina among our many brothers and sisters who have fallen to ignorance and intolerance.

Please join our reception after the memorial.

Some Good News

Richmond, California, voters stood up to Chevron's massive, money-soaked campaign to put Chevron-friendly candidates in the municipal elections. You see, after the bad fire in the refinery a few years ago, the city of Richmond sued to recover the costs of the damage. Before any outcome in the courts, Chevron put up and supported ($3 million) their friendly candidates with huge media coverage. The citizens of Richmond were not swayed and voted for their own candidates over the Chevron ones. (Source: The Daily Kos)   Yeah-good for you, Richmond.

And this news from the Marin Agricultural Land Trust (MALT): Composting rangeland!

"Last month, the American Carbon Registry, a group that certifies carbon offsets, used results from the Marin Carbon Project to approve a protocol for adding compost to rangeland. Through the new protocol, ranchers who spread compost on their pastures can now claim carbon offset credits and sell them through California's cap-and-trade program. The Marin Carbon Project -a consortium of ranchers, scientists and non-profits, including MALT -has shown that a one-time addition of compost to rangeland improves soil health and water retention, nurturing pasture grasses. This boosts the pasture's ability to pull carbon from the atmosphere, where it contributes to global warming, and fix it instead in the soil as a nutrient."   Thank you, Marin people.
