"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Brian Baker

On Monday night I returned from a week away.  I was attending two back-to-back governance committees of the Episcopal Church: The Executive Council of the Episcopal Church, which is the governing board of the Church, and the Standing Commission on Liturgy and Music (SCLM.)  Early this year, I was asked to represent our Province (the western dioceses) on the Executive Council, and that appointment included the responsibility of liaising with the SCLM.  My ordination vows include taking part in the governance of the church and for my entire ministry I have tried to say "yes" to one governance commitment at a time.  For most of the first seven years at Trinity, I served on the Board of Trustees of our Diocese and in that capacity helped lead the budget and apportionment subcommittees.  I resigned my position on that body when I was appointed to the Executive Council.

In June, 2015, the triennial General Convention of The Episcopal Church will meet in Salt Lake City.  Both of my meetings this past week kept that event in focus as we moved toward completing the tasks assigned at the last General Convention.  One thing the SCLM has been working on is refining marriage rites with the knowledge that the General Convention may authorize them for same-sex couples to be used throughout the church.  The Executive Council has been working hard on reducing the church-wide budget in order to keep funds in dioceses and congregations where the bulk of the mission of the church is carried out.  We are also examining the possibility of moving the church offices out of Manhattan.  While sitting in day-long meetings takes a particular kind of endurance, I appreciate this opportunity to see how the wider church functions and to play a part in leading the church in this important time.

On another note:
In a world that is becoming increasingly divisive and governed by fear, it is important to find opportunities to embody the comprehensive love of God.  Over the past few years, members of Trinity Cathedral have modeled this love by joining with members of Congregation B'nai Israel, the Salam Center and Capital Christian Center for educational and service events.  For example, a few months ago we gathered at B'nai Israel to watch and discuss a documentary about the fire-bombings of the mosque in Yuba City.  I want to let you know of another special opportunity.  Capital Christian Center is hosting a pre-Thanksgiving potluck dinner.  Trinity hosted one last year and it was a great success.  It will be on Sunday, November 16 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm.  Attendance it limited to 25 people from each congregation.  If you are interested in learning more or in signing up, please email Susan Hotchkiss (susan_hotchkiss1@hotmail.com) or
Linda Jensen (jensen_linda@sbcglobal.net) by November 8th.  Spaces will be given to the first 25 people who contact Susan or Linda.

Blessings,

Family Promise

Help Needed!

How does a few hours of peace and quiet all to yourself while you provide an essential service to our Family Promise ministry sound? Think that is too good to be true? Think again.

We need a volunteer to wash, dry and fold the bedding (approximately 20 sets of sheets and pillowcases) on the Monday following our Family Promise weeks. As we host one week each quarter, we are talking about four Mondays a year.

Bring a good book or a movie loaded on your tablet and relax to the white noise of the washer and dryer here at the Cathedral. If you prefer, you could collect the bedding on Sunday, take it home and return it at your convenience the following week.

The next Family Promise week is scheduled for December 7th - 14th, so your services would be needed on December 15th.

Please contact Eleanor Taniguchi, our Family Promise Coordinator at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com

Thank You to Cheri Meadows

and

Announcing an Opportunity for Service

By The Rev. Steve Skiffington, Cathedral Deacon

Thank you Cheri!

All ministries have changes and cycles. In her role as the coordinator Safe Ground Pilgrimage Program here at Trinity, Cheri Meadows has overseen the many volunteers who make Safe Ground nights at the Cathedral such a blessing to our brothers and sisters who are without homes. This ministry has been enormously successful under Cheri's leadership. In 2013, we served meals to over 4,000 people. As 2014 draws to a close, we on our way to reaching - and probably exceeding - 5,000! Cheri has fine-tuned our system whereby this is all possible. At the end of this month (October), she will be stepping out of the coordinator's role to have more family time. We wish her well and give thanks for her ministry. Happily, Cheri is not leaving Trinity and we look forward to continuing to be blessed with her energy and spirit. Well done, good and faithful servant! (Matthew 25:21)

Announcing an Opportunity for Service!

Cheri's stepping down as coordinator for Safe Ground Pilgrimage here at the Cathedral, offers an opportunity for a parishioner to carry on this fine work. One of the gifts Cheri left us is an amazingly simple, yet effective, system designed to make the Safe Ground Pilgrimage nights possible at the Cathedral. The following is a listing of the skills needed to be the coordinator as well as an outline of the system.

OVERVIEW OF JOB:

This is a job that can be done from home.  While Cheri has usually dropped by on most Safe Ground nights to see how it's all going, that is not necessary to the essentials of the job. Both Ronnie Vaughn and I are normally present during Safe Ground nights as the eyes and ears of the Cathedral to ensure a safe and orderly operation.

Both Cheri and I will work with the new coordinator to enable a smooth transition. Like Cheri, the new coordinator will have direct access to me at all times. My job as deacon is to support all coordinators of the various Outreach Ministries.

SKILLS:

  • Good time management: Keep an eye on the calendar and send out notices in a timely manner.

  • Good people skills: Interact with volunteers and staff (particularly our Building Manager, Dana Chamness).

  • Work without direct supervision: While all outreach ministries are under the overview of the deacon, outreach ministers normally work on their own or in teams.

  • Managing large e-mail data base: Adding names and removing names of Safe Ground volunteers when requested.

  • Writing: Creating notices of needs for Safe Ground nights.

FLOW OF WORK:

  • Using E-mail data base, send out notice of needs one week prior to hosting Safe Ground nights.
  • Monitor responses.

  • After a Safe Ground night send out a thank you to the data base noting how many were served and thanking the volunteers by name.

If this area of ministry calls to you, please contact me and we can talk it over. Many thanks for considering it.

All Saints Sunday Choral Eucharist
Sunday, November 2 at 11:15 am
Josef Rheinberger

The Cathedral Choir will sing the beautiful "Missa Brevis in F major" opus 117 by Josef Rheinberger (1831 - 1901), as we celebrate All Saints Sunday. Rheinberger was one of the most important of German composers in the mid-nineteenth century, and was considered the equal of Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn.

His a cappella Missa Brevis "In Honorem Sanctissimae Trinitatis," sung in Latin, is one of several fine settings he composed during his career. And of course, we'll sing all of those great All Saints hymns! Please join us.
Next Week & Beyond

Election Day Is Just Around the Corner:

Tuesday, November 4th

Trinity Cathedral is a designated polling place so many people who might not ordinarily visit us will be coming by to vote. This presents a great opportunity for us to demonstrate that "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You" is not simply a clever marketing phrase but an accurate description of the Trinity brand of hospitality. Let's show our visitors that we absolutely "walk the talk" by having a team of greeters providing cookies, coffee and lemonade at the polls. So break out your mixing bowls and aprons - or swing by the bakery! You may bring your cookie donations to church labeled "Election Day" any time prior to the election. There will be a table in the Great Hall where you can leave your donation on Sunday, November 2nd. You may also bring your donations on Election Day.

We also need Election Day hosts to greet the voters as they arrive and offer them refreshments.

If you can either help on Election Day or provide some goodies, please sign up in the Great Hall on Sunday or contact Kathleen Montgomery at ladyiris49@gmail.com so we will know we're ready.

Friday, November 7, 6:30-8:30pm in the Great Hall

Mark your calendars! It's almost Board Game Night again! Everyone is invited to join in and have some fun! The games have been great fun and we are all looking forward to November 7th to have another go! We've played a lot of different games, but didn't get around to a whole stack of others. Pick what you enjoy playing and start a game; we don't all have to play the same one. We can make coffee or you can bring your own beverages. Folks have brought snacks for themselves and to share - it's up to you! We meet in the Great Hall from 6:30-8:30 (and may stay later, if there's a hot game in the works!). For more information, please contact Wendy Mustain via email: wmustain.trinitycathedral@gmail.com.

We will set up tables (early Sunday morning) to display your pictures, memorabilia, uniforms, etc. Better yet, wear your uniform! Drop off your items, labeled with your name and phone number, at the cathedral office no later than Thursday, November 6th. Also write up a short statement about your service and describe your contribution to the display. Let us share our stories of service with all of Trinity's congregation! Floyd School logo Floyd School

New Principal, Mr. Eric  Chapman will be with us on Sunday, November 9 at 10:15 am  in the assembly area to talk about his plans for Floyd School. He would like help in the areas of field trips, building up the collection in the school library and volunteers to help children with their reading.

I hope you will  come hear about his plans for the school. He is excited to come speak to us and wants to meet the people of Trinity Cathedral.

Clothes Closet

Last Friday, October 24th, our Clothes Closet was open for families at Floyd School. There were 23 families that were given clothes which has just a about depleted the inventory, according to Josephine Hein one of the clothes closet managers. We are asking for your help in bringing in gently used children's clothes from infant to size 16 childrens. The winter months are coming and the children will need long sleeved shirts and long pants as well as jackets and sweat shirts.

Please bring your donations to the barrel on the stairs on the second floor.

Fruit Cups The Back Snack program is in need of granola bars, Raman soup, fruit cups, macaroni and cheese boxes, oatmeal packets and cans of tuna.  You may also bring those items to the Floyd school barrels near the stairs. You may also write checks to Trinity Cathedral and label it for "Floyd School".

Thank you for your help.
