"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

 Brian Baker

I am Resurrection and I am Life, says the Lord.

Whoever has faith in me shall have life,
even though he die.
And everyone who has life,
and has committed himself to me in faith,
shall not die for ever

These are the words that begin the Episcopal burial liturgy.  This is the first paragraph of an anthem that is spoken by the congregation before the opening prayer.  I love these words.  They are words of hope spoken in the crucible of grief and loss.  For me, there is something about the burial liturgy that changes me, deepens my faith, each time I pray it.  Resurrection and hope seep into my bones.  I begin to know resurrection in a way that creates resilience in the face of death.  That's one of the benefits of praying together faithfully over time.  The words of the prayers change us.

Last weekend we had the opportunity to pray these words twice, once at the service for Nancy Bunch and once at the service for Jim Shultz.  I missed Nancy's service because I was officiating at a wedding at the same time as her service.  I was present for Jim's service Saturday night.  Because of Jim's connection with the music of the Cathedral - he was one of our substitute organists - the service was filled with beautiful music he had selected.  The service was spectacular and the experience filled me with gratitude for Trinity Cathedral, the Episcopal liturgy and the invitation to celebrate life and forgo fear, an invitation that is present in our celebration of resurrection.

Next week we have another opportunity to say these words and proclaim resurrection.  We will have a memorial service for Alma Mason, a beloved, long-time member of Trinity Cathedral, at 11:00am on October 23.  If you are available I hope you can join us.

Also, if you are in Sacramento this weekend, please come to our Jazz Mass and parish dinner on Saturday.  If you want to come to the dinner, call the office at 916.446.2513.  If you forget to call, come to the dinner anyway.  I would love to see you.

Blessings,

Brian

Parenting Matters

This Sunday from 10:15 - 11:15 in the Assembly Area!

Active, anxious, easy, challenging, cautious - a child's temperament profoundly impacts family life and parenting! Temperament is innate - it's our preferred style of relating to people and events. Understanding temperament can help us develop effective parenting strategies that help our kids live joyfully in the world. Please join me this Sunday as we explore temperament, behavior, and parenting strategies. -- Rev. Kathy Hopner

Confirmation
Confirmation Classes

for High School Youth

Join us this Sunday

in Room F at 11:15am

Confirmation classes are held on the first and third Sundays of each month.

"We are made Christ's own by virtue of our baptism.  And then in confirmation, Christ becomes our own, as a visibly manifest transformative force determining the character of our whole lives." - Kathryn Tanner, "Towards a New Theology of Confirmation."

Confirmation -- like Baptism -- is not something we simply do as a required rite of passage.  It is a public commitment to living out our baptismal faith. In this sacrament we ask for God's empowering Spirit to strengthen us to live out Christ's love in the world.  Confirmation classes for youth at Trinity offer a chance to explore what we believe and what we don't, what it means to be a Christian and a part of a faith community, and what it means to be a person of faith in this world. Classes will continue until the Easter Vigil service when the confirmation is held. Please contact Rev. Kathy Hopner or Rev. Megan Anderson if you'd like more information about this program

All Saints Sunday Choral Eucharist

Josef Rheinberger

The Cathedral Choir will sing the beautiful "Missa Brevis in F major" opus 117 by Josef Rheinberger (1831 - 1901), as we celebrate All Saints Sunday. Rheinberger was one of the most important of German composers in the mid-nineteenth century, and was considered the equal of Johannes Brahms and Felix Mendelssohn.

His a cappella Missa Brevis "In Honorem Sanctissimae Trinitatis," sung in Latin, is one of several fine settings he composed during his career. And of course, we'll sing all of those great All Saints hymns! Please join us.
