One week from Saturday we have an annual parish dinner, sponsored by the vestry.  Last year was the first time we hosted this dinner and it was  lovely.  It is an opportunity to celebrate the exciting things that are happening at Trinity as well as kick-off our fall pledge drive.  There will be sign-up sheets in the Great Hall so you can sign up when you come to church on Sunday.  You can also call the office at 916.446.2513 to sign up.  There will be no charge for the dinner and I promise it will be delicious.

On another note, we had a great Blessing of the Animals service on Sunday.  You can see some of my pictures here:

In memory of our brothers and sisters who have suffered violent deaths through murder or suicide because they were (or perceived to be) gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, queer or intersex

Please join us as we remember their lives with love, bear witness to the atrocity of their deaths and affirm together that hatred and violence must end.

This service will embrace a variety of spiritual expressions including the Jewish, Christian, Buddhist, Muslim and Hindu traditions and we will honor the names of over 750 people (and the countless others whose names are not known to us) who died at the hands of hatred, ignorance and fear.

In 1999, the first Service of Remembrance was held at Trinity Cathedral and again in 2008.

Cathedral Organ First Choral Evensong service of the season

Be sure to join the Cathedral Choir for our first Choral Evensong service of the season on Thursday, October 9 at 6:00 pm. This short music-filled evening service consists of psalms, canticles, scripture readings, and prayers. Using the majestic language of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer, it is a time to let go of the busy-ness of the day, and meet God in a meditative way. In the liturgical calendar, we will commemorate Robert Grosseteste who became Bishop of Lincoln in 1245. The choir will be joined by guest organist Dr. Ryan Enright, and will include music by J. S. Bach, Thomas Ebdon, Mark Blatchly, and Peter Hallock. Please join us!

TREE Tip

TREE LogoUse Leaves and Ashes!

by Ann Rothschild

This from a knowledgeable member of our congregation who declined to be named...  Use your BBQ ashes for feeding your garden. Fold them into the soil. The minerals will feed the earth and the veggies will feed you. Good for vegan and vegetarian gardens too. I am kicking myself for discarding those ashes all these years.

We know how nutritious chard and kale are, but are you using up the beet greens too? They are good in soups and casseroles. Radish greens are edible, carrot tops make a great stand-in for parsley, and leaves from your pepper plant will add the green pepper flavor to your dishes.

Wonderful-nothing wasted.

PS - check www.interfaithpower.org for coverage of the huge march in New York last week to push for strong policies to combat climate change. Roughly 400,000 people marched and the faith communities contributed 10,000 of those! Seems that people do want action and are willing to make changes in their lives. Remember Joseph Bruchac's words - "we have to think of how our actions will affect seven generations in the future."

Greetings from the Garden

What joy to be in the garden now! The days are cooler, new shoots are bright green against rich brown soil, and the fragrance of soil has always been soothing to me.   God seems more approachable when I'm digging in the dirt. I see the green growing spirit of God, I hear the voice of God in the birds and the wind singing through our Chinese Elms, and I experience the joyful dance of God as the corn bends and sways.

The garden brings joy to our neighborhood community, too. Every time I'm there people stop to tell me how much they enjoy watching the garden's development. Early one day, a mom with two little girls, three and five years old, discovered the garden for the first time. I invited them in, and spent a wonderful 45 minutes helping them learn through their senses. We felt leaves, some soft, some prickly; felt stems, some round and some square (yes, mint family plants have square stems!); sniffed flowers and tasted herbs. So nice to watch their faces light up with the wonder of discovery.

It's also chore time in the garden. The decline of our summer crops draw insects, especially ones we consider pests. Scientists believe that insects use chemical smell and taste cues to help them recognize host plants. Stressed or dying plants are excellent hosts! For example, our gardeners have seen a sharp increase in aphids in the past few weeks. We can avoid some of them by pulling out declining vegetables, using our clippers to cut vines and stems into 4 - 6 inch lengths and placing them in the cold compost bins - the self-contained bins located against the west fence. Cold composting will not kill weed and vegetable seeds, so please be observant about what goes into the cold compost bins.

We are working on creating composting bins that will generate heat and kill seeds, but they are not ready now. During the past few weeks, we've sealed, primed and painted the fence that is the backbone for the garden's compost piles. The irony in attempting to protect a wooden fence from decaying with everything else in the compost pile is not lost on me. Anita or Kevin would love to hear from you if you have time to help build the bins!

The garden is many things to many people: exercise, physical and spiritual sustenance, a quiet retreat. Martin Luther was known to say: "God writes the gospel not in the Bible alone, but on trees and flowers and clouds and stars. " May your time in the garden be blessed.
