Have you heard? Our Family Service has moved to the first Sunday of the month! This Sunday we will celebrate the Feast of St. Francis in the Great Hall at 9:00 a.m. Everyone is welcome to bring pictures of their pets or their stuffed animals for our altar.

I was recently asked why we have this service. This is an important question, and I wanted to share my answer with all of you. Due to their developmental processes,

The Rev. Kathy Hopner

celebrating a Family Service.

children learn through the active use of their bodies. Kinesthetic learning is also one of the three primary ways adults receive and process information. The early church understood this. First John begins, "We declare to you what was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we have looked at and touched with our hands, concerning the word of life, that you might have fellowship with us." The apostles embodied their faith. We do, too; not only in the ways in which we live our lives as followers of Christ, but in our Episcopal services as well. We stand, we sit, we kneel. We light candles, we sing, we come forward to share communion together. In forming the Family Service, we have looked for ways to actively engage our children, helping them to form a deeper connection to our traditions and practices.

Children bring all that they are to God - wiggly or calm, quiet or noisy. We welcome them as full members and participants in this service. We ask the children for help with various parts of the service: lighting the candles, bringing up the bread and wine, passing the collection plates, and serving as Eucharistic ministers. During the Prayers of the People, we bring our needs, concerns, and thanksgivings to God in words or drawings. These are collected and read by the children. "The Story" is a combination of the gospel and the sermon shared in language and actions appropriate for them. We intentionally explore the liturgical year; watching the changing seasons in the colors and actions of each service.

Following each First Sunday Family Service, we share a simple brunch and make some art! Art has always been an important part of our faith; just think of our music and stained glass - the beauty of our worship spaces. The art projects we do, based on the gospel, provide an opportunity for the children to reflect and respond deeply and creatively to what they have experienced in the service. When we do art together and share a simple meal, we get to know each other a little better, and make new friends. Please join us as we gather together - mind, body and soul - to worship and glorify God.

Cathedral Organ Restoration Project
Now on the Web

As you may know, the Cathedral's 1983 Reuter pipe organ is badly in need of major repair and rebuilding. A capital campaign is underway to raise funds to complete this work, and restore the instrument to it's original quality. The campaign has gotten off to a great start, and we'd like to invite you to be a part of it!

A special section of the Cathedral website has been dedicated to the project. It gives detailed information and photos about the need, and the plan for restoration. Click here to check it out!

At the bottom of the page, you can download a brochure and contribution form. Thank you all for your support and participation in this exciting project!

Ruth-less Religion

Presenter: Morey Lloyd

This short three act play in the Book of Ruth reveals a reformation within the Scriptures to upset even the staunchest believer by demonstrating the true nature of the Eternal One. Life becomes a witness to the Acts of God.

In the Community

SACT Logo LET MY PEOPLE VOTE

ˇDESPIERTA MI PUEBLO! ˇVOTA!

This November, we're all voting.

As people of faith, we're called to make our voices and our values heard at the ballot box.

Every single day, families in our community face the consequences of economic inequality, heartbreaking levels of violence, health disparities and the separation of their families through mass incarceration and senseless deportations. Our vote is our power to change these things.

Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) is taking action, and Trinity's local organizing committee (T-ACT) will be working diligently with other congregations to educate low-incidence voters and get them to the polls. WE need you to do two things:

1) Make a pledge that you will vote on November 4 (pledge cards available at welcome center) and get your friends to sign one, too;

2) Come out to help with T-ACT Phone Banking, for the next six Tuesday nights from 5:30 - 8:30 pm in Room C at Trinity Cathedral.

Phone Banking Dates: September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21, 28

Tour de Pink for Breast Cancer

by Michelle Barry

October will bring the 2 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink was last year on my 1st anniversary, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 17-19, starting in Paso Robles, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page at

http://www.ysctourdepink.org/goto/michelledbarry
