Gratitude for the Sacrament of "Place"

The Book of Common Prayer describes "sacrament" as the "outward and visible sign of inward and spiritual grace...". When we think of "sacrament" the words that most often come to mind are Holy Eucharist (or communion) and Baptism. Sharing in the sacramental life of the church helps us to recognize God's presence among us in ways that we can catch. Over time that knowledge shapes who we become.

I am also coming to realize that the Church buildings themselves are a kind of sacrament. Though not listed among the seven sacraments of the church, I believe that sacred places also help shape who we become.

I became keenly aware of this while on the Camino de Santiago. It was hard to walk anywhere in Spain and not find evidence of sacred space. Grain bins were decorated on most every farm and topped with crosses for all to notice. Churches were open everywhere for pilgrims to stop and pray. Their architecture and art spoke to the good news that God is in our midst in ways that were easy to catch. In one parish there was a large crucifix inside an even larger open frame. There were stacks of post-it-notes available for people to write out their petitions and leave them within Christ's redeeming embrace. It was that parish's way of helping people discover the availability of God.

Trinity Cathedral is also an example of sacred space. Our weekday services are embraced by the cloud of witnesses in the columbarium who have preceded us. We come together each day to pray for the needs of the world. It is a place to pray for those who, like us, don't deserve God's favor. It is a place to lay burdens down. It is a place to intercede for those we love. It is a place to be re-minded of the Good News held for us in scripture. It's a place to "taste and see that the Lord is good."

While I know that God is everywhere, there is something about being in a holy place that makes God's presence easier to catch. I invite you to join us in this sacred place and to be part of the Good News in the midst of a world desperate to find peace. Jesus prayed, "Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven." I believe participating in the prayer life of the Church to be one way that prayer is being answered in our generation.

The needs of the world are great and often overwhelming but I truly believe prayer changes things. We are called to intercede for our enemies, for those who suffer loss, for those suffering from epidemics and their caregivers, for our President. We pray for those who feel forgotten. We are a people who pray even when the results of our intercessions are hard to find.  As followers of Christ, it's just what we do.

I want to invite you to join us for any of our weekday services and be part of a community of prayer. Service times are: Mondays 5:45pm, Tuesdays 12:10pm, Wednesdays 9am, Thursdays 6pm, Fridays 9am, or Centering Prayer - Tuesdays at 6pm.

People ask what they can do, the problems of this world seem so huge. Jesus said, "Get two or three together and pray."

SACT Logo LET MY PEOPLE VOTE

ˇDESPIERTA MI PUEBLO! ˇVOTA!

This November, we're all voting.

As people of faith, we're called to make our voices and our values heard at the ballot box.

Every single day, families in our community face the consequences of economic inequality, heartbreaking levels of violence, health disparities and the separation of their families through mass incarceration and senseless deportations. Our vote is our power to change these things.

Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) is taking action, and Trinity's local organizing committee (T-ACT) will be working diligently with other congregations to educate low-incidence voters and get them to the polls. WE need you to do two things:

1) Make a pledge that you will vote on November 4 (pledge cards available at welcome center) and get your friends to sign one, too;

2) Come out to help with T-ACT Phone Banking, for the next six Tuesday nights from 5:30 - 8:30 pm in Room C at Trinity Cathedral.

Phone Banking Dates: September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21, 28

Tour de Pink for Breast Cancer

by Michelle Barry

October will bring the 2 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink was last year on my 1st anniversary, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 17-19, starting in Paso Robles, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page at
