"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Six months ago Trinity parishioner Tina Wilks came to see me.  She had a desire to do something to promote peace in the world on the U.N. declared International Day of Peace, September 21.  She wanted to create an event that would include a broad cross-section of Sacramento and, since it was a Sunday, an interfaith service.  It was an ambitious vision.  Now that we are days away from the 21'st, I am in awe of the breadth of the event that Tina has put together.  Starting at 8:00 a.m., on the North steps of the Capitol, there will be yoga, family activities, a labyrinth made of donated shoes, speakers, musicians, tables with information on non-profit organizations including some serving veterans and art activities.  The event will end with a 30 minute interfaith service that begins at 1:30pm and includes myself, Rabbi Mona Alfi of B'nai Israel, Imam Azeez from the Salam Center and Pastor Rick Cole from Capital Christian Center.   I think with the ideological, political and religious conflict around the world, there is an important witness in having a Jewish rabbi, a Muslim imam an Episcopal priest and an Assembly of God pastor come together and pray.  I am grateful for Tina's vision and hard work.  You can see a detailed schedule of the event on their facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/peaceday2014?ref=br_tf

Last year, around Thanksgiving, members from the four congregations just mentioned (Trinity, B'nai Israel, Salam & Capital Christian) met in Trinity's Great Hall for a potluck dinner.  It was a lovely event.  This year the dinner will be hosted by Capital Christian Center on the evening of November 16.  We will communicate the details when we have them worked out.  I hope you are able to join us.

Blessings,

Brian

Special Diocesan Prayer Request

Northern California Wildfires

There are currently several wildfires burning within the Episcopal Diocese of Northern California. Please join us in praying for the victims and families of those in harm's way, and all of the firefighters working to contain the fires.

From the Book of Common Prayer, page 832

Assist us mercifully, O Lord, in these our supplications and
prayers, and dispose the way of thy servants towards the
attainment of everlasting salvation; that, among all the
changes and chances of this mortal life, they may ever be
defended by thy gracious and ready help; through Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.

Greetings from the Garden

Trinity's Community Garden is growing and growing! We have just completed our first summer with only two plots still available for those of you who would like to start a winter garden. As the tomatoes, peppers and squashes wind down, seeds for lettuce, beets, carrots and pansies are ready to plant. Broccoli, cabbage and other vegetables are ready for transplanting.

Peas, both edible and sweet flowering varieties, should be planted now also.

On Saturday, August 30, Trinity hosted nearly 25 gardeners from Trinity Cathedral, Leataata Floyd Elementary School, and four local area Lutheran churches to continue development of an interfaith gardening community network.

Presentations included information on large-scale compost programs provided by the Green Restaurants Alliance Sacramento (GRAS) and by Bill Maynard, the City of Sacramento Community Garden Manager, who discussed composting on an individual and community garden basis. Trinity member Ann Rothschild demonstrated solar cooking and Thrivent Financial, a Christian financial institution, graciously provided lunch and information about their grant opportunities.

This was a wonderful opportunity to hear about established gardens, newbies like Trinity, and churches who are considering community gardens.

For Garden information, please contact Anita Williams at anita.trinity@gmail.com or 916-806-2471 or Kevin Sanders at kevinlsanders50@gmail.com or 916-612-1950.

SACT Logo LET MY PEOPLE VOTE

ˇDESPIERTA MI PUEBLO! ˇVOTA!

This November, we're all voting.

As people of faith, we're called to make our voices and our values heard at the ballot box.

Every single day, families in our community face the consequences of economic inequality, heartbreaking levels of violence, health disparities and the separation of their families through mass incarceration and senseless deportations. Our vote is our power to change these things.

Sacramento Area Congregations Together (ACT) is taking action, and Trinity's local organizing committee (T-ACT) will be working diligently with other congregations to educate low-incidence voters and get them to the polls. WE need you to do two things:

1) Make a pledge that you will vote on November 4 (pledge cards available at welcome center) and get your friends to sign one, too;

2) Come out to help with T-ACT Phone Banking, for the next six Tuesday nights from 5:30 - 8:30 pm in Room C at Trinity Cathedral.

Phone Banking Dates: September 23, 30, October 7, 14, 21, 28

10th Annual Mustard Seed Spin

Sunday, September 28

Trinity parishioner, Victoria Akins created "Mustard Seed Spin" in 2005. Please support her efforts on this 10th Anniversary of the Spin.

This great charity bike ride has become a Sacramento tradition for kids and families. All proceeds are donated to the Mustard Seed School for homeless kids.

The Mustard Seed Spin starts and ends at William Pond Park, at the south end of Arden Way, and offers 3 routes along the beautiful American River for riders of all ages.  Cost is $35/person or $30 per person for a family of 3. At the end of the ride: Dos Coyotes burritos, Hagen's freezes, bike raffle and silent auction.  T-shirts, live music, safety instruction, helmet checks and Steve Buzzard as MC make this one event you don't want to miss!   Follow this link for more details.

Tour de Pink for Breast Cancer

by Michelle Barry

October will bring the 2 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink was last year on my 1st anniversary, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 17-19, starting in Paso Robles, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page at

Please bring a bag lunch. Chairs, cushions, tea provided. Please refrain from using scented products that may affect others.
