"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

This past Saturday the vestry spent the day establishing goals for their work over the next few months.  Before I describe those goals, I want to reiterate the role of the vestry.  The vestry's role is to: 1) establish the mission of the Cathedral - in our case our mission is to "make disciples who love and serve Christ and his world," 2)  make sure we have the financial resources, financial management and facility to accomplish the mission, 3) establish the budget, and 4) establish policies so our mission is accomplished in a safe manner.  The vestry also has some other important roles like praying for every member of the congregation and participating in the discernment process for those considering ordination.  With that in mind, the vestry established three goals to work on in the next few months.  The first relates to our fundraising.  The vestry will be creating two stewardship sub-committees: one to run our Fall pledge campaign and the other to create opportunities for people to support the work of the Cathedral through their wills and other legacy gifts.  The second goal is to establish a committee that will prioritize and plan for significant facility improvements.   While eventually we will want to build something new on the lots on 27th street, a higher priority is to update and renovate our Cathedral and classrooms, including items such as our landscaping and accessibility.  The third goal is to establish a working group that will look at ways to make our financial accounting and reporting more understandable.

One of the things that will guide the work of the vestry is the results of the survey that was recently completed by 381 members of the Cathedral.  The top three priorities indicated in the survey are:

1) Make necessary changes to attract families with children and youth to our church
2) Develop and implement a comprehensive strategy to reach new people and incorporate them into the life of the church
3) Create more opportunities for people to form meaningful relationships (for example, small groups, nurtured friendships, shared meals, etc.)

You can see how these priorities can help guide the vestry in their decisions.  For example, as we look at renovating our facility, we can look for ways to be more accommodating to families with children, or more flexible with spaces so the staff can develop innovative programs to attract new people to the Cathedral.  Of course, we want to make sure our budget is aligned with these priorities as well.  I think the staffing in our current budget supports these goals.  With The Rev. Kathy Hopner as the director of Family and Youth Ministries, Jennifer Coldiron as our youth leader and The Rev. Megan Anderson creating innovative programs to connect with new members, we have strong staff support for the first two priorities.  I am working with the staff so we increase opportunities to form meaningful relationships in all of our ministries (priority# 3.)

If you feel called to help the vestry in any of their goals, or would like to help the staff in these ministries, please let me know.

Blessings,

Brian

Cathedral Organ Restoration Project Demonstration

Sunday, September 14, 10:15am in the Cathedral

As mentioned in the e-Cross last week, Trinity has begun a campaign to restore and enhance its 1983 Reuter pipe organ. Like any other fine instrument, it needs care and maintenance, as parts age and wear out. Some of that needed TLC has been put off for a number of reasons, principally financial. With that in mind, the ad hoc Organ Restoration Committee, with the support of the Clergy and Vestry, has developed a two-phase plan to bring the organ back to its full stature. Cathedral Organ

You can be part of this exciting project. This coming Sunday, September 14, between the 9:00 and 11:15 services, Canon Link will present a live demonstration of the organ as it is, and will offer the Committee's vision for the plans to restore and upgrade it. Please plan to attend the demonstration and please prayerfully consider joining other parishioners and friends in financially supporting this important and exciting project.

Welcome back to Sunday School!

Sunday School begins September 14!

We are so excited to begin a new program year! Sunday School is offered to all children and youth ages 4 through 12th grade from 10:15 to 11:15 during the school year. We cannot claim to be faith filled people without knowing the stories and practices of our faith. Theologian Jerome Berryman said, "To carry stories is to become wisdom-bearers, God-bearers, like Mary herself." Our Sunday School program works in conjunction with our worship services, Children's Chapel, Acolyte program, and youth group to help children and youth claim their identity as faith filled and faithful people. Our Sunday School program includes:

Preschool: Our preschool program, Heart Shaper, is designed to engage young children in Bible stories through multisensory activities, crafts, songs, and games.

Godly Play: For kindergarten and first graders, Godly Play is a Montessori approach to faith formation, which helps children explore their faith using a spiral curriculum including Bible stories, our sacraments, and the seasons of the church year through wonder and play.

Faith Builders: Our second and third graders will explore a new program this year! As Faith Builders, they will explore and reflect on our faith and the stories that form us through Legos!

Explorers: Fourth and fifth grades use a variety of materials, including the Episcopal Children's Curriculum and Godly Play at the intermediate levels, to explore in greater depth our sacraments, liturgy, and the Bible.

Junior High: Junior high youth in grades sixth through eighth use a lectionary based curriculum, Faith Lens, and a Bible based program called re:form. They discuss, explore and reflect on the Sunday gospel reading or a Bible story, and its implications for our daily lives.

Senior High: Senior high uses a variety of materials to explore foundational aspects of our faith and contemporary issues to ask what it means to be faithful in the world we live in today.

Family Promise

Family Promise is Coming September 28th!

Trinity will once again host our homeless sisters and brothers the week of September 28th. There are many ways you can help and support this important outreach ministry. When our guests arrive, we need loving volunteers to welcome and spend quality time with the families, cook, serve and clean up after supper and stay the night. You decide the type and extent of your commitment. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Great Hall. Many hands make light and joyful work!

Family Promise Sacramento is the local representation of a nationwide program focusing on homeless families with children. They are supported in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing opportunities to develop skills to improve their lives. A number of Sacramento faith communities are involved in this program. Congregations open their doors for a week at a time to families who have been selected to participate.

Food Fair, Film, and Bags

Celebrate Food Literacy Month by attending the Food Fair at Southside Park, between T and W Streets, and 6th and 8th Streets, on Sunday September 14, from 9 am to 1 pm. There will be children's games and crafts, farm animal petting, live music, and of course, food. After seeing the film Fed Up last month (you did see it, didn't you?), this can be a positive food experience.

Bitter Seeds

A documentary film showing how the rise of genetically modified agriculture is killing the viability of small farms in India -- and sparking a wave of suicides resulting in the deaths of more than a quarter of a million despairing farmers. This film is available on Netflix and is at the Folsom public library - a must in educating yourself on how genetic modification is affecting the world.

TREE's Second Harvest table has been groaning (nay, cheering) with produce lately - thank you to all who share their riches. Other freebies include calendars and Christmas cards.

Check the table, too, for an alternative to those horrible single-use plastic bags we all use, which pollute the oceans world-wide. Hopefully, our governor will sign the ban on them. The alternative is a package of 3 reusable bags with drawstrings, which can bring home your fruits and veggies from the farmers' market and store in your fridge. They can be washed out and reused again and again..... Info and order from 3bbags.com $7.00 a set.

Tour de Pink for Breast Cancer

by Michelle Barry

October will bring the 2 year anniversary of my breast cancer diagnosis. You may have heard me speak about what an incredible healing experience riding in the Young Survival Coalition's Tour de Pink was last year on my 1st anniversary, and Jorge and I are excited to be riding again this year! On October 17-19, starting in Paso Robles, CA, we will ride our bikes over 200 miles with other young survivors, co-survivors, and others to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition (YSC) and increase awareness that young women can and do get breast cancer.

While 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer in their life, less than 7% of diagnoses are made in women under 40. A breast cancer diagnosis can be especially shocking and challenging for young women. At a time in life most often reserved for family and career, issues of treatment, recovery and survivorship suddenly take top priority. With treatment, the chances of survival for young women diagnosed with early breast cancer (like me!) are good. However, breast cancers in younger women tend to be more aggressive and more likely to require chemotherapy. The YSC is providing an important source of information and support for young survivors and those who love them!

We are asking for your support-all donations big or small are appreciated! The YSC is a 501( c )(3) not-for-profit organization. To make a donation, please visit my Tour de Pink page at
