"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

As I was leaving the church last night to head home, I was passed by choir members heading to their first choir practice after taking the summer off.   They seemed eager to get back together -- there was a first-day-of-school vibe, or perhaps it was my imagination.  I always get a little excited this time of year.  The choir will be back in full force, Sunday school starts, and tonight TNAC begins with Compline at 6pm, dinner at 6:15 and classes at 7:00.  We have quite a variety of excellent classes.  I hope you are able to join us.

The clergy met for a day-long retreat today and the vestry will be meeting for a retreat on Saturday.  Both groups will be looking ahead to the coming program year and considering what we can do to make Trinity even more vibrant than it is.  Please pray for us as we do this work and share any suggestions or ideas you may have.  I look forward to this new program year as we strive to come more fully alive in the love of Christ Jesus.

Blessings,

Brian

Ministry Opportunities

Stephen Ministry Logo

A Gift for Listening

We all have challenging times in life. Sometimes we need a friend to walk through those times with us. A Stephen Minister is trained to do just that: to come along side another in their journey, to encourage when encouragement is needed, to be a compassionate companion, to listen.

If you can give one hour once a week to meet with someone who's going through a difficult time, then you may be the perfect candidate to be a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to learn more about this dynamic ministry, please see Cherie or Dana Chamness in the Bookshop between services on Sundays or call the Bookshop at 916-442-9194. Or call Susan Wilson at 916-835-2799.

Cathedral Organ Restoration Project Demonstration

Sunday, September 14, 10:15am in the Cathedral

Cathedral Organ Trinity Cathedral's 1983 Reuter pipe organ has served the Cathedral well for thirty years. While not the largest pipe organ in Sacramento, it is known for its refined, elegant sound, and has been played by some of the world's great organists.

Like any other fine instrument, it needs care and maintenance, as parts age and wear out. Some of that needed TLC has been put off for a number of reasons, principally financial. Additionally, the organ has endured some unexpected trauma, including flooding and an invasion of bats. (Yes, bats!) As a result, Canon for Music David Link has had to perform magic tricks virtually every week to disguise some of the broken sounds generated by the Reuter.

With that in mind, the congregation began a restoration project earlier this year. The ad hoc Organ Restoration Committee, with the support of the Clergy and Vestry, developed a two-phase plan. The first phase is to provide the organ with much-needed renovations. This is critical in order to preserve and protect this expensive and exquisite musical instrument.

The second phase is to enrich its sound by adding an antiphonal voice in the Narthex. Because of the length and shape of the building, the sound of the organ, broadcasting solely from the front of the church, is delayed and deadened by the time it reaches the rear third of the Nave. An antiphonal voice, broadcasting from behind, will fill out and enhance the overall sound, and in particular will encourage and support congregational singing for participants seated in that rear third of the space.

We are very happy to announce that the antiphonal voice will be named in honor of one of Trinity's greatest supports of musical ministry, The Rev. Canon Grant Carey.

The anticipated cost of the project is currently estimated at $155,000. Thanks to the exceptional generosity of some early donors, the first phase, that of restoring the organ to a healthy state, will be able to begin shortly. We now are reaching out to the entire Trinity community to close the remaining gap, so that the second phase can follow on a short time-line. The Committee also hopes to be able to fund future maintenance and repairs, so that the care of this fine instrument can remain current.

You can be part of this exciting project. On Sunday, September 14, between the 9:00 and 11:15 services, Canon Link will present a live demonstration of the organ as it is, and will offer the Committee's vision for the plans to restore and upgrade it. Please plan to attend the demonstration and please prayerfully consider joining other parishioners and friends in financially supporting this important and exciting project.

For questions contact Canon David Link sierracanon@gmail.com or Committee Chair David Lindgren davidlindgren@surewest.net

30/40s and Beyond resumes on September 14th

We will reconnect and catch up with one another as well as starting a new series-The Peaceful Warrior. We will be watching the movie The Peaceful Warrior which is loosely based on the book The Way of the Peaceful Warrior by Dan Millman. The Peaceful Warrior chronicles his life as a college gymnast who had everything he could ever want, until an injury changed his life forever. During his recovery, fate presents Dan with a wife and a stranger named Socrates, who unlocks a world of wisdom and spiritual understanding.

The book and movie have led to a movement in peaceful warrior thinking and living. For more information see www.peacefulwarrior.com.

Welcome back to Sunday School!

Sunday School begins September 14!

We are so excited to begin a new program year! Sunday School is offered to all children and youth ages 4 through 12th grade from 10:15 to 11:15 during the school year. We cannot claim to be faith filled people without knowing the stories and practices of our faith. Theologian Jerome Berryman said, "To carry stories is to become wisdom-bearers, God-bearers, like Mary herself." Our Sunday School program works in conjunction with our worship services, Children's Chapel, Acolyte program, and youth group to help children and youth claim their identity as faith filled and faithful people. Our Sunday School program includes:

Preschool: Our preschool program, Heart Shaper, is designed to engage young children in Bible stories through multisensory activities, crafts, songs, and games.

Godly Play: For kindergarten and first graders, Godly Play is a Montessori approach to faith formation, which helps children explore their faith using a spiral curriculum including Bible stories, our sacraments, and the seasons of the church year through wonder and play.

Faith Builders: Our second and third graders will explore a new program this year! As Faith Builders, they will explore and reflect on our faith and the stories that form us through Legos!

Explorers: Fourth and fifth grades use a variety of materials, including the Episcopal Children's Curriculum and Godly Play at the intermediate levels, to explore in greater depth our sacraments, liturgy, and the Bible.

Junior High: Junior high youth in grades sixth through eighth use a lectionary based curriculum, Faith Lens, and a Bible based program called re:form. They discuss, explore and reflect on the Sunday gospel reading or a Bible story, and its implications for our daily lives.

Senior High: Senior high uses a variety of materials to explore foundational aspects of our faith and contemporary issues to ask what it means to be faithful in the world we live in today.

Family Promise

Family Promise is Coming September 28th!

Trinity will once again host our homeless sisters and brothers the week of September 28th. There are many ways you can help and support this important outreach ministry. When our guests arrive, we need loving volunteers to welcome and spend quality time with the families, cook, serve and clean up after supper and stay the night. You decide the type and extent of your commitment. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Great Hall. Many hands make light and joyful work!

Family Promise Sacramento is the local representation of a nationwide program focusing on homeless families with children. They are supported in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing opportunities to develop skills to improve their lives. A number of Sacramento faith communities are involved in this program. Congregations open their doors for a week at a time to families who have been selected to participate.

During the day, the Family Promise Day Center (located in the Loaves & Fishes complex) provides a safe and secure haven for the families offering essential services such as showers, laundry facilities, a mailing address, computers and food. The center also provides access to telephones and computers. Adults receive assistance in preparing for and finding employment and permanent housing as well as improving literacy and life skills.

Every evening, Family Promise transports the families from the day center to the congregation that is hosting them for the week. Families receive dinner and each family is provided a private room with bedding at the church. Breakfast is served each morning.

For more information about Family Promise and how you can help, please contact our amazing Family Promise Coordinator, Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or Deacon Steve Skiffington at deaconskiff@gmail.com.
