"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

In this coming Sunday's gospel reading, Jesus tells Peter, "Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven."  This statement is echoed at the end of John's gospel when Jesus tells all of the disciples that they have the power to hold people in their sins and the power to loose them from their sins.  I believe this is true for all of us.  We can hold people in their sins by focusing on the ways we believe they have wronged us or others, and having this wrongdoing define them.  We have this ability.  But if we are going to follow Jesus who commands love of enemy and forgiveness, even of those crucifying him, I don't think we have permission to hold people in their sins.    We must be in the business of freeing people from their sins.  We do this by realizing that no matter what they have done, they are still beloved children of God, members of our human family, deserving of, and capable of, love.   With this in mind, we must move toward healing and reconciliation.

This is not easy.  It is particularly difficult in times of crisis or high anxiety.  The events in Ferguson, as well as the many crises around the world, can easily drive us to move in to camps of like-minded people that demonize those on the other "side."  For the sake of the gospel, and the sake of our own souls, we need to remember that everybody, protesters, police, Israelis, Palestinians, etc., are God's children deserving of, and capable of love.  We must also be aware of the ways in which we and others participate in collective guilt -- judging everyone in a particular group based on the actions of some in the group.  All too often police, protesters, African Americans, Muslims, and others are clumped together.  This denies the complexities of the situations we face as well as the uniqueness of each child of God in the group.

We live in a challenging time.  But the challenges we face are not bigger than the Gospel we proclaim and the transforming love of God.  Now is our time to stand for love and reconciliation trusting in the power of God to shine light into darkness.

Blessings,

Brian

Stephen Ministry Logo

A Gift for Listening

We all have challenging times in life. Sometimes we need a friend to walk through those times with us. A Stephen Minister is trained to do just that: to come along side another in their journey, to encourage when encouragement is needed, to be a compassionate companion, to listen.

If you can give one hour once a week to meet with someone who's going through a difficult time, then you may be the perfect candidate to be a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to learn more about this dynamic ministry, please see Cherie or Dana Chamness in the Bookshop between services on Sundays or call the Bookshop at 916-442-9194. Or call Susan Wilson at 916-835-2799.

Native American Dancers coming from Alaska

to the Sacramento area!

Why churches? Our dances have a message! In the past missionaries told the Native Americans they had to give up their culture to become a Christian. They were forced, with the help of the US government who had an intentional policy of de-culturalizing Native Americans, to give up their native names, languages. and dancing. There has been a rediscovery of Native Culture among many native people in the past several years. It is now believed one can have their culture and Christianity too. We now know that you don't have to become white to become a Christian. But our group wants to take this a step further. We want to communicate Christianity through the culture. The Metlakatla Presbyterian Youth Fellowship Alaskan Native dancers will be bringing a Christian message through their dancing. This will be an artistically pleasing program as well as a form of Christian witness. Some of the native leaders here have called this program ground-breaking.

We want to communicate Christianity through the culture.

Family Promise Family Promise is Coming

September 28th!

Trinity will once again host our homeless sisters and brothers the week of September 28th. There are many ways you can help and support this important outreach ministry. When our guests arrive, we need loving volunteers to welcome and spend quality time with the families, cook, serve and clean up after supper and stay the night. You decide the type and extent of your commitment. Look for the sign-up sheet in the Great Hall. Many hands make light and joyful work!

Family Promise Sacramento is the local representation of a nationwide program focusing on homeless families with children. They are supported in their efforts to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness by providing opportunities to develop skills to improve their lives. A number of Sacramento faith communities are involved in this program. Congregations open their doors for a week at a time to families who have been selected to participate.

During the day, the Family Promise Day Center (located in the Loaves & Fishes complex) provides a safe and secure haven for the families offering essential services such as showers, laundry facilities, a mailing address, computers and food. The center also provides access to telephones and computers. Adults receive assistance in preparing for and finding employment and permanent housing as well as improving literacy and life skills.

Every evening, Family Promise transports the families from the day center to the congregation that is hosting them for the week. Families receive dinner and each family is provided a private room with bedding at the church. Breakfast is served each morning.

For more information about Family Promise and how you can help, please contact our amazing Family Promise Coordinator, Eleanor Taniguchi at ehtaniguchi@gmail.com or Deacon Steve Skiffington at deaconskiff@gmail.com.
