"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

There has been a heaviness in my heart this week, a heaviness from two different and distinct directions.  First was the death of Robin Williams.  For some reason Robin Williams death has had a significant impact on me and many, many people.  Perhaps it was because he had such a remarkable influence and made so many of us feel good about the world.  Perhaps it was because the illness he died from, depression, is so poorly understood, and clearly, so hard for us to treat.  As a culture, we don't do a good job talking about and treating mental illness.

Second was the killing of Michael Brown in Ferguson, MO, a suburb of St. Louis.  This death and the response of the police to protesters highlights the deep racial divisions that continue in our country.  As I was reading reports of a pastor being shot with a 60 caliber (that's big) rubber bullet and reporters being shut down, I realized that today is the feast day of Johnathan Daniels, an Episcopal seminarian from New Hampshire who went to Alabama to participate in a civil rights protest.  He was shot and killed on this day in 1965 as he pushed Ruby Sales, a young African American girl, out of the line of fire.

While my heart is heavy, my faith invites me to see, and strive for, a better way of being - a way where we care for those struggling from illness, particularly mental illness, and we see all people as God's children, deserving of, and capable of love and respect.  I invite you to pray for the members of Robin Williams' family as well as all those struggling with depression.  Pray also for the protesters and police in Ferguson, that peace may prevail.  Please hold in your prayers the members of St. Stephen's Episcopal church, and their Rector, The Rev. Steve Lawler, as they strive for justice and peace in their community.

Blessings,

Brian

Church Assessment Tool Survey

Thank You!

To all who have submitted completed questionnaires.

If you haven't, now is the time!

The results from this assessment need to shed light on WHAT our members are feeling, and HOW MANY share those feelings. This is critical to guiding us on our journey together. PLEASE DON'T MAKE THE MISTAKE OF LETTING OTHERS SPEAK FOR YOU. Sharing your story will only take 20 - 30 minutes, and this is your last chance. The window on this opportunity closes after August 15th (tomorrow)!

If you'd like to help us gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church, please complete the survey by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/TrinityCathedral

If you have questions, please contact Chris Tzimenatos by email at cmtzimenatos@hotmail.com.

Many thanks,
The Trinity Cathedral Vestry & Leadership Team

Ministry Opportunities

NEEDED!!!
Office Volunteers
Susan Hotchkiss, one of our current, happy volunteers!
The front desk volunteers are welcome ministers.  They are the ones who greet you when you call the office or come for a visit.  We need people to manage the front desk in the office.  Currently we have openings on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons (1 PM - 5 PM) as well as Friday mornings (9 AM - 1 PM).  If you can help but not at those shifts, contact Jerry and we will see if we can flex our current schedule.  Join us in welcoming all sorts of inquirers to Trinity Cathedral.

Skills required include good phone and customer relationship.  Computer skills are welcome but not necessary.

Contact Jerry Pare' (930-8032 or jpare@trinitycathedral.org).

Thank you for considering helping us out!

Stephen Ministry Logo

A Gift for Listening

We all have challenging times in life. Sometimes we need a friend to walk through those times with us. A Stephen Minister is trained to do just that: to come along side another in their journey, to encourage when encouragement is needed, to be a compassionate companion, to listen.

If you can give one hour once a week to meet with someone who's going through a difficult time, then you may be the perfect candidate to be a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to learn more about this dynamic ministry, please see Cherie or Dana Chamness in the Bookshop between services on Sundays or call the Bookshop at 916-442-9194. Or call Susan Wilson at 916-835-2799.

Sonya Reichel
Seminarian Heading Out to the Field

I want to let you know that I will begin my year of field education at St Michael's in Carmichael on August 27th. In the coming year I will be participating there in Sunday liturgies, being mentored in organizational and liturgical leadership, and most importantly, being formed for priesthood through all my relationships, just as you all have been forming me.

I ask for your continued prayers. I am so grateful for your support and encouragement in my discernment process, and for your modeling of living into and out of our baptismal promises.

I will visit as I am able, and please consider yourselves invited to St Michael's as well. I keep our beautiful, vibrant Trinity Cathedral community in prayer and carry with me many treasures from you to share.

Yours in Christ,

Sonya Reichel

Children and Family Ministry

Do you like to sew?

Are you good with craft projects?

Children and Family Ministries is looking for people to help us with some cutting and sewing projects. We need to add

2010 Christmas Pageant
2010 Christmas pageant cast.

to our Christmas pageant costumes. These are simple costumes - we have the patterns and some of the fabric. We will also soon begin work on a felt project. If you can cut out preprinted felt patterns and glue them together, we'd love your help - no sewing needed for these! Please contact Rev. Kathy Hopner at 930-8027 for more information. Thank you!

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.
