"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

We are blessed with remarkably talented clergy at Trinity Cathedral.  In the past year, we have had some significant transitions in clergy staff, welcoming 5 new clergy.  I realize, for those who are not here every week, it may be difficult to know what clergy are on staff and what they do.  So here are some details about our clergy staff.  Counting myself, we have 10 clergy that serve Trinity Cathedral. Five of our clergy generously offer their services as volunteers.  In addition to me, Canon Lynell Walker, The Rev. Kathy Hopner, The Rev. Megan Anderson are full-time employees.  The Rev. Pamela Anderson is a part-time employee.  All of the clergy are involved in our worship as well as pastoral care.  With four services on Sunday and a Eucharist service every weekday, it helps to have a large group of clergy.

The Rev. Bob Phillippi helps lead our worship services. Bob "retired" last year, but fortunately for us, it looks like he only retired from going to weekly staff meetings.  He is a great help on Sunday mornings.

The Rev. Peter Rodgers officiates monthly at our Sunday 12:45 service.

Blessings,

Brian

Ministry Opportunities

Stephen Ministry Logo

A Gift for Listening

We all have challenging times in life. Sometimes we need a friend to walk through those times with us. A Stephen Minister is trained to do just that: to come along side another in

their journey, to encourage when encouragement is needed, to be a compassionate companion, to listen.

If you can give one hour once a week to meet with someone who's going through a difficult time, then you may be the perfect candidate to be a Stephen Minister.

If you would like to learn more about this dynamic ministry, please see Cherie or Dana Chamness in the Bookshop between services on Sundays or call the Bookshop at 916-442-9194. Or call Susan Wilson at 9168352799.

July 31 Bruce Springsteen's Theology

Presented by Jerry Paré

From Ashbury Park's "Lost in the Flood" (1973) through High Hope's "This is Your Sword" (2014) Bruce Springsteen's music is full of biblical references and depictions of our struggle with evil and our search for the Good. This presentation and discussion of theological themes in Springsteen's music is a chance to explore and enjoy the Boss' music in our common and continuing search for the Divine. Or just come because, along with Bruce, you "believe in the LOVE that you gave me, you believe in the HOPE that can save me, you believe in the FAITH and you pray, that someday it may raise me..." ("Badlands", circa 1978).  Click here for a YouTube recording of "The Rising" (scroll down and click "Show More" to see the lyrics).

Putting your money where your heart is: Divest from Fossil Fuels, Invest in Solar or Wind.

Faith communities recently have taken a stand against climate change and the fossil fuels that largely contribute to greenhouse gases. New York's Union Theological Seminary had $108.4 million invested in fossil-fuel companies, and voted to divest in June.

The World Council of Churches, the Unitarian Universalists, and the United Church of Christ have also divested from fossil-fuels. The Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, the Shalom Center, and the Oregon Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America have approved divestment in fossil-fuels. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA) has voted to study the possibility (Lauren Markoe. "Some U.S. faith groups unload fossil-fuel investments." Washington Post 7.18.14).

Good, good-movement is afoot. Now these entities need to reinvest in good renewable energy-and that's not fracking for natural gas, which has horrible environmental side effects. Much safer to invest in solar and wind energy-it's also a growing business market.

Do you have investments in fossil-fuel companies? Have you checked your portfolio lately?

Green investment advice is offered by greenamerica.org  in their annual Green Pages-lots of socially and environmentally responsible ideas. Look for a copy of their National Green Pages on the Second Harvest Table on Sundays.

Floyd School

Going back to school is quickly approaching for the children at Floyd School and they will be needing school supplies.

Our Back Snack program needs BORING back packs. Please get plain colors, dark green, blue or black if possible. We have a better return rate if they are not so pretty or cool.

Our Clothes Closet needs gently used children's clothing for infants to size children's 16. We especially need pants and shorts for boys size 5 to 8.

Your donations will help a great deal. The barrels for Floyd School donations are on the second floor next to the steps.

Floyd School Garden Clean-up

Michael Shapiro, a school volunteer, is

pictured with Floyd School children in the vegetable garden he created at the school.

To help out and get ready for a new school year we are organizing a school garden clean-up day for Saturday, August 23 from 9 am to 12 at the school. We will be weeding, mulching, and planting some plants which have died over the summer.

Please bring trowels, clippers and gardening gloves. We will have refreshments.  If you need community service hours this is a place to get some.  If you like to garden or just help out we will appreciate your participation.

Meet us at Floyd School, 1401 McClatchy Way, near Fifth and Broadway.

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.
