"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Today is the last day that Julia Boudrye is with us.  Julia has been working 1/2-time at Trinity as part of the LEVN (Lutheran Episcopal Volunteer Network) program.  Julia has been a remarkable asset to our youth and children's programs and we are sad to see her go.  Julia came to us after graduating from Roanoke College in Virginia and will be attending Princeton Divinity School in the Fall.  I am eager to see where her ministry takes her.

This was our first time participating in the LEVN program, which partners recent college graduates with year-long ministry opportunities.  The LEVN volunteers receive a small stipend and live in community at the Belfry at U.C. Davis.  The cost to the Cathedral for a 1/2-time volunteer is $10,000.  Looking back on the ways in which Julia was able to connect with and engage our teens, this was certainly a good investment.  We are planning on continuing our participation in this program next year.

Youth ministry is a team effort, and while the LEVN volunteer cannot provide continuity or create lasting relationships, we have learned that a LEVN volunteer can bring new energy and enthusiasm, as well as diversify and strengthen our leadership team.

Julia, as our first LEVN volunteer, has set the bar high for all those who will come after her.  We wish her all the best.

Blessings,

Brian

7:00pm - Voices of Faith

July 24 Freedom Summer

Presented by The Rev. Dr. Pamela Anderson

Freedom Summer (also known as the Mississippi Summer Project) was a campaign in the United States launched in June 1964 to attempt to register as many African-American voters as possible in Mississippi, which had historically excluded most blacks from voting. This is also the time when three political activists were murdered for educating voters. It has been 50 years ago that this historical summer changed America and strengthened the civil rights movement. Come and listen to these Voices of Faith and let us celebrate their courage when all the odds were against them.

They will be needing school supplies and our Back Snack program will need back packs. The program needs BORING back packs. Please get plain colors, dark green, blue or black if possible. We have a better return rate if they are not so pretty or cool.

We need gently used children's clothing for infants to size children's 16. We especially need pants and shorts for boys size 5 to 8.

So as you see sales please purchase what you can. Your donations will help a great deal. The barrels for Floyd School donations are on the second floor next to the steps.

Thank you for helping,

Nancy Tennyson

Leatatta Floyd School has a wonderful helper in
Michael Shapiro
Michael, pictured above, is a retired junior hIgh teacher who has created a vegetable garden and orchard at the school. He takes small groups of children  to the garden on Tuesdays and Thursdays and teaches them about plants, gardening, composting, planting and harvesting. Students and staff members take the produce home during school time. This summer Trinity Cathedral has partnered with Mr. Shapiro. He picks the produce and we transport it to the River City Food Bank. I believe to date we have delivered over 200 lbs of zucchini, cucumbers, tomatoes, egg plant and kale to the food bank this summer.

To help out and get ready for a new school year we are organizing a school garden clean up day for Saturday, August 23 from 9 am to 12 at the school. We will be weeding, mulching, and planting some plants which have died over the summer.

Please bring trowels, clippers and gardening gloves. We will have refreshments.  If you need community service hours this is a place to get some.  If you like to garden or just help out we will appreciate your participation.

Meet us at Floyd School, 1401 McClatchy Way, near Fifth and Broadway.

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.
