"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

I have been serving at Trinity Cathedral since last August as a part of the Episcopal Service Corps. My program, the Lutheran Episcopal Volunteer Network is based in Davis where a group of seven young adults live together in intentional community and serve in local non-profits.

I was able to share this past Sunday (click here to see her sermon) that this year has been incredibly formative for me. Working at Trinity showed me where Jesus was present in the world today, and specifically in the youth. They are amazing individuals and have taught me an incredible amount about God and my faith. My experience this year has helped me to discern a call to ministry, and I will be attending Princeton Theological Seminary in the fall. I couldn't have done this without this loving community and all the help from the staff, parishioners and clergy this year!

Our youth group recently got back from a mission trip in Lapwai, ID. Together with 70 others, we worshipped, painted, put on a kids camp and learned about our identity through Christ in the world today. We had time together each day to process what we were learning, and many of you were able to take part in our adventure through our blog (www.trinityEYF.weebly.com). We would love the chance to share with you in person on July 20th at 10:15 in the Great Hall. This trip would not have been possible without your prayers and financial support and we want a chance to recognize all of those who contributed! We will provide brunch, stories from our trip and lots of smiles. Everyone is invited. All you have to do is bring yourself! I hope to see you all there.

Blessings,

Julia Boudrye

Ministry Opportunities

Labyrinth
Walking the Labyrinth

One of the Spiritual Practices that Trinity makes available each month to our parishioners and to the wider community is the opportunity to walk the Labyrinth.  Walking the Labyrinth is a way of centering, a way of slowing the pace, a way of entrusting one's journey to God.  The Labyrinth Ministry is currently looking for a couple of volunteers who could help set up and take down the canvas in the Great Hall on the third Friday of the month.  If you would be willing to take a turn please contact Rhonda Canby and let her know your availability at rcanby@msn.com.

Writing

Writing Group

Conference Room

Anyone who would like to write in an informal setting is welcome to drop in. Writing prompts are offered, we write for 20 minutes, then share what emerges or not, as the spirit moves. For information, please contact June Gillam at jgillam@wavecable.com.

PLANNING OUR FUTURE TOGETHER!

On behalf of the Vestry and the leadership team, we invite you to complete the Church Assessment Tool (CAT), an on-line survey that will help us gauge the strength, vitality, and trends in our church. The information gained from this assessment will be used during our Mutual Ministry Review in September and will help us make better decisions about the future of Trinity Cathedral. Results from the survey and the Mutual Ministry Review will be presented to the congregation this fall. Your participation is vital!

In a few days, you will receive an email with a link to the CAT. Beginning July 15th and ending August 15th, we are asking you to go online by clicking on the link provided and tell us about your experiences in and priorities for our church. Please do not discuss the survey or your answers with others as this may influence their answers.   If you need a paper copy, please come to the office or see an usher before service, and we will provide one.

All answers are strictly anonymous. We have no way of matching any assessment to a particular person, so please feel free to candidly share your perceptions, opinions and experiences. Our future together is dependent on your participation and honest answers. All parishioners in your household are encouraged to submit individual responses.

If you have questions, please contact Chris Tzimenatos at cmtzimenatos@hotmail.com or 916-317-7854.

Many thanks,

Candle Safe Ground Evening Service

Earlier this year, lay members of Trinity Cathedral began offering an evening service of scripture and prayer to guests attending Safe Ground. Safe Ground dinner is served in the Great Hall at 6 pm and the Safe Ground evening service in the Cathedral begins at 5:45 pm. The Safe Ground evening service invites those who are marginalized, dispossessed, homeless, outcast, or alienated from God into a sacred space. Some have never been inside a church. Many, from a variety of faith traditions or none at all, have been chased away from houses of worship and told they are not welcome.  Scripture and prayers in Trinity Cathedral's Safe Ground evening service speak to the special needs of the women and men who are guests at Safe Ground. At the conclusion of the service, guests may light votive candles, or kneel and pray privately, or meet with members of the Cathedral who are available for private, one-on-one prayer. There is much holiness; the presence of the Spirit fills the evening. Those who lead the Safe Ground evening service want to share this very special ministry. Come and see. Be a blessing. Be blessed.

July 10 - Anne Hutchinson

Presented by Susan Hotchkiss

You are invited to become acquainted with Anne Hutchinson, who, in 1637, was charged with sedition and heresy by the Massachusetts General Court. She was ultimately banished by these men and went on to become the only female co-founder of an American colony, Rhode Island, along with Roger Williams. During her lifetime, Hutchinson was referred to as the instrument of Satan and Jezebel by her Puritan detractors. Nathaniel Hawthorne used her as model for Hester Prynne in The Scarlet Letter. All in all a very interesting woman and a very devout voice of faith.

Fed Up with Sugar

I am referring to the 2014 documentary Fed Up, recently shown at Tower thanks to Assembly member Roger Dickinson. The film relates to the epidemic of childhood and general obesity and exposes the food industries' egregious power to sway and manipulate the public through misleading advertising.   Some facts: the one craving we are born with is for sweetness! The American Heart Association recommends a maximum of 25 grams of sugar a day. One soda has 25-35 grams sugar.   Added sugar (dextrose, sucrose, fructose, corn syrup and multiple other names) has no nutritional value whatsoever-it gives temporary energy and excess converts at once to fat. Natural sugars (in fruit and milk) burn more slowly and are integrated into the body's digestive system. Artificial sweeteners simply train the body to crave sweet.

When mandatory nutritional labeling was passed, the sugar lobby persuaded lawmakers to omit the RDA for sugar. So sugar is listed in grams but you have no idea how many you should have per day. All other nutrients have RDA percentages.

With the increased public consciousness around food and health, marketers resort to clever labeling. For instance, products labeled low and non-fat may often have increased sugar content. Read those labels and be informed. This film should be shown at all public schools and parents required to see it.

As Mr. Dickinson said, the only way to change things is from the ground up-that means us! Public opinion forced the tobacco companies to come clean and see what a huge change has happened over the last decade. Can we do the same with sugar?

A 2002 documentary with the same name, Fed Up! chronicles U.S. food production systems from organic farming to genetic engineering. Also worthwhile-it won an Environmental Media Award.

Both films are available on Netflix.

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.
