"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Brian Baker

Last night congregation B'nai Israel hosted a remarkable interfaith event marking the 15th anniversary of the arson attacks on three Sacramento synagogues and the 20th anniversary of an arson attack on a mosque in Yuba City.  About 200 people gathered for the event.  We watched a short video on the synagogue fires and a new 30 minute documentary on the mosque fire.  We then heard from David Washburn who created the documentary.  The evening closed with a panel discussion on the importance of interfaith work.  I was on the panel with Rabbi Alfi from B'nai Israel, Imam Azeez from Salam Mosque and Pastor Rick Coles from Capital Christian Center.

I was struck by the response from the Sacramento community after the 1999 Synagogue fires.  The United Methodists were holding their annual conference at the Convention Center and they suspended their meetings on Friday night so the members of the Synagogues could hold their services there.  They also hosted an event where hundreds of religious leaders and thousands of people from Sacramento could gather to pledge their support.  The Sacramento Bee published a full page "United We Stand" ad that people all over Sacramento put in the windows of their homes, cars and businesses.  Rabbi Alfi, who was working at B'nai Israel at the time said it was then that she fell in love with Sacramento.

Last night's event affirmed for me the power of love to cast out evil, and the importance of maintaining strong relationships with people from different beliefs.  I am grateful for those who are organizing opportunities for us to cross boundaries and I call your attention to an event this Tuesday night from 7:00 to 8:30 at Salam Mosque, 4545 College Oak Drive, near American River College.  The first hour will feature Rabbi Loving from B'nai Israel talking about Judaism.  The evening will close with Muslim prayers.  This event is free and I hope you are able to attend.

Blessings,

Brian

Summer Sunday School - Abundant Life

Please join us for our Summer Sunday School program, Abundant Life Garden Project, beginning Sunday, July 6th - August 24th. This program, designed by Episcopal Relief and Development, engages children with Bible stories focused on water, seeds, soil, animals, and harvest. We'll explore what plants and animals need to grow and flourish, and what we as children of God need to grow and shine as a light to the world! We'll meet upstairs in the Assembly Area from 10:15 - 11:15 on Sunday mornings in July and August. We are looking for junior and senior high school youth to help with this program, as well as some adult leaders. If you are interested, please let Rev. Kathy Hopner know at 930-8027.

Moms, Pops, and Tots

Moms, Pops, and Tots is on summer break! Please join us again in September on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30 in the nursery. We welcome children ages birth to four and their parents and grandparents.

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.

Sacramento Gay Pride
Ready to march!
What a glorious day. Perfect weather, great fellowship, beautiful and well attended Eucharist service, parade and great participation and discussions at our booth.

Thank you for making this a successful Pride for Trinity and the Church. Appreciate the help in organizing and producing the materials, transportation, manning the booth, the parade, etc.....

The Rev. Megan Anderson celebrating the Eucharist before the parade.
For me the best part was our Eucharist and the participation. I would say 20-25.  A lot of ideas for next year. Maybe a couple of planned marriages? Just saying. Wouldn't that be awesome!
