Summer Sunday School - Abundant Life

Please join us for our Summer Sunday School program, Abundant Life Garden Project, beginning Sunday, July 6th - August 24th. This program, designed by Episcopal Relief and Development, engages children with Bible stories focused on water, seeds, soil, animals, and harvest. We'll explore what plants and animals need to grow and flourish, and what we as children of God need to grow and shine as a light to the world! We'll meet upstairs in the Assembly Area from 10:15 - 11:15 on Sunday mornings in July and August. We are looking for junior and senior high school youth to help with this program, as well as some adult leaders. If you are interested, please let Rev. Kathy Hopner know at 930-8027.

Moms, Pops, and Tots

Moms, Pops, and Tots is on summer break! Please join us again in September on Wednesday mornings from 10:00 - 11:30 in the nursery. We welcome children ages birth to four and their parents and grandparents.

We need Legos, Legos, Legos!

Do you have unused Legos that need a new home? We are just the place for them! In September, we will begin a new Sunday School program for our second and third grade class: Building Faith, Brick by Brick. We are very excited about this program which uses Legos to explore our faith stories. We'd love donations of used or new Legos - we're also in need of Lego people and their accessories.

TREE Tip for June

Bee Colony Collapse and Pesticides.

You have all heard of the worldwide die-off of bees recently, I am sure. While some die-offs occur naturally with the ups and downs of life, the last few years has seen a massive increase in bee losses. This is a serious problem-no bees, no pollination, no food!   Research has revealed one culprit as a new group of pesticides containing chemicals called neocotinoids or neonics, which can kill the bees, attack bee immune systems, and damage their ability to return to the hive-mysterious disappearances which leave bee keepers with no clues and a starving hive. If they do return to the hive, they contaminate the bees in the hive. These pesticides were developed a decade ago to replace other, still-toxic pesticides that dissipate more quickly.

They are widely used on fruit, vegetable, and ornamental plants, get absorbed by the plant through the leaves, so the plant becomes toxic to pests, but also to birds and pollinators.

TIP-ask the nursery where you buy your plants whether they are using neonics or getting neonic-sprayed plants from a supplier. Those plants remain toxic to bees and if fertilizer has neonic weedkiller in it-the substance stays in the soil for 3 years, poisoning anything planted in it. Check any pesticides or herbicides you buy (I hope you don't) for ingredients.

Another factor is the conversion of vast areas of bee-friendly cropland to corn and soybeans-already not bee-friendly, but these crops are treated with genetically modified insecticides and fungicides to resist herbicides sprayed on the fields to kill weeds. Winds carry the sprays far from the fields and into water ways and hedges-killing natural forage the bees would feed on.

Many neonics are made by the German company, Bayer, (yes, the aspirin people), but in Europe neonics may not be used on bee-attractive crops in any European Union country.   The European Union takes the precautionary tactic, but unfortunately the U.S. waits for a disaster to happen before the EPA or chemical companies will take any action to limit their use.

Well, disaster has happened-over the last few years, bees have died or disappeared and bee keepers report losing from 30 to 90% of their colonies.
