"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
  Brian Baker

Last week I spent a week of my continuing education leave on a retreat in Santa Fe with a group of 5 clergy.  An old and dear friend from when I lived in Boise, The Rev. Nancy Taylor, now senior pastor of Old South UCC Church in Boston, Massachusetts received a Lilly Grant to fund her sabbatical.  Part of this grant included gatherings of her colleagues for renewal, prayer and conversation.  Except for me, all the participants were from Boston.  All were active in urban ministry.  They were also from congregations with long histories and deep roots in their community. Nancy's church is coming up on its 350th anniversary and its former members include Samuel Adams, Phillis Wheatley and Benjamin Franklin.  It was inspiring to hear how these churches have served their city for centuries.  These conversations helped me realize that our current ministries can have an impact long into the future - we aren't here just for us, but for those who will come after us.   Like most retreats, I will ponder the experience in my heart for quite a while.

On one special evening, we decided to bless one another.  I suppose this is a particularly geeky clergy thing to do, but we wanted to bless and be blessed as we shared how we bless our congregations and other gatherings of worshipers.  I was the only Episcopalian in the group, so I was the only one who had blessings that came from a particular book of worship.  Everyone else had blessings that they either wrote themselves, or that came from a variety of resources.  It was a treat to hear words of blessing from people that had become my friends.  I found Nancy's blessing particularly striking - it is the one I used in my sermon last Sunday:

"May you love God so much, that you love nothing else too much.  And may you fear God (just) enough, that you fear nothing else at all."

What a powerful direction for our hearts - focused on loving God in such a way that all our other desires are properly ordered and fear is driven out.

As lovely as it was to be in beautiful Santa Fe with remarkable colleagues, it was great to come home and an honor to be in the pulpit on Sunday.

Blessings,

Brian

Bible and Book of Common Prayer Challenge

The goal is to read one chapter in the New Testament, one Psalm, and one of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer each day for one year to anchor each day in scripture, and to become familiar with the beauty of the prayers in the Prayer Book.  Rhonda Canby is the facilitator for this TNAC class.

The Resurrection of Jesus

We will gather to explore the meaning and the implications of the Resurrection of Jesus.  In this text, two of today's most important and popular New Testament scholars--John Dominic Crossan and N.T. Wright--air their very different understandings of the many historical realities and theological meanings of this singular event that separates Christianity from other faith traditions.  The Rev. Canon Tina Campbell and The Rev. Canon Lynell Walker, are the co-facilitators of this class.

The Life of Muhammad

If you have an interest in learning about Muhammad and how Islam began, please join us for a five-week class on the life of Muhammad We will view parts of the PBS documentary each week and discuss what we have learned---and there is much to learn. Susan Hotchkiss is the facilitator for this class.

The Laws of the Spirit by Dan Millman

The Laws of Spirit opens with the story of Dan Millman's encounter with a sage in the wooded hills near his home. Through stories, tests, and experiences in the wild, the sage challenges Millman to examine 12 core principles that underlie human existence: balance, choice, process, presence, compassion, faith, expectation, integrity, action, cycles, surrender, and unity. The book shows how these keys - at the heart of every religion, culture, and moral system - can lead to a deeper sense of meaning, connection, and harmony with the world. It also shows readers how these principles can transform relationships, careers, finance, and health. Vaughn Wolff is the facilitator for this class.

The Art of Hosting Conversations That Matter

Learn how to host meaningful conversations that range from personal to large groups, and recognize the Spirit's presence in our midst. Discover and explore practices that enable courageous leadership in the midst of uncertainty and complex challenges. Empower the reality that everyone is a leader to facilitate change. The Rev. Megan Anderson and The Rev. Kathy Hopner are the co-facilitators of this class.

This Sunday

Communion Communion Sunday

June 1 at the 9:00am service

What's your favorite memory of a meal? Is it a picnic with a friend or a holiday meal with all of your family present? Is is a childhood memory or a recent experience?

Eating is such a basic part of being human; it's necessary for life. It can be a simple act of grabbing a breakfast bar on your way out the door each morning.

Eating together is different. It binds us together. It forms us. The act of eating together wires us for relationships from infancy. We know that babies who are fed without human engagement may never be able to bond with others. Think of all the skills we learn around the table: we learn language, we develop motor skills, we learn to take turns, to be mindful of others, to be patient.

When we gather on Sunday to share communion, we learn to eat together in the presence of God. We learn that we are all welcome, we learn that all of us will be fed. This, too, is a simple act - bread and wine shared together. But in this simple act of eating we experience love, compassion, justice. We practice the Kingdom of God, and, over time, we discover and interpret, and rediscover and reinterpret what that means in our own lives.

The children in second through fifth grades have been exploring this lifelong process that forms us and reforms us. On June 1st we'll celebrate Communion Sunday at the 9:00 service. They'll have the opportunity to share communion together; some of them will also be our Eucharistic ministers.

Next Week & Beyond

Election Day Is Just Around the Corner:

Tuesday, June 3rd

Trinity Cathedral is a designated polling place so many people who might not ordinarily visit us will be coming by to vote. This presents a great opportunity for us to demonstrate that "The Episcopal Church Welcomes You" is not simply a clever marketing phrase but an accurate description of the Trinity brand of hospitality. Let's show our visitors that we absolutely "walk the talk" by having a team of greeters providing cookies, coffee and lemonade at the polls. So break out your mixing bowls and aprons - or swing by the bakery! You may bring your cookie donations to church labeled "Election Day" anytime prior to the election. There will be a table in the Great Hall where you can leave your donation on Sunday, June 1st. You can also bring your donations on election day.

If you can either help on election day or provide some goodies, please rsvp to: deaconskiff@gmail.com (or Steve's cell: 204-4955), so we will know we're ready.

A Conversation with Pastor Florence Kaweesa

Thursday, June 5 at 7:00pm in the Assembly Area

As part of Thursday Night at the Cathedral, Pastor Florence  Kaweesa, a Presbyterian minister for the Harvest Time Church in Uganda, Africa, will share her insights regarding her ministry with her congregation and the hundreds of orphans that she and her husband are looking after. They are in the midst of building a school which will house and educate 1000 orphans. It is a challenging task and a challenging ministry when there are limited resources, labor and funds and little support from their Ugandan government. Come learn about the history of Uganda, the political wars during the 60's-80's and how this country is trying to heal and how Florence and her husband are doing their part to bring healing and ministry to their hurting part of the world. This will be a fascinating conversation that you won't want to miss!

Friday, June 6, 6:30pm in the Great Hall

Mark your calendars, it's almost Game Night time again! Everyone is invited to join in and have some fun! Our inaugural meeting was great fun and we are all looking forward to June 6th to have another go! We played Apples to Apples and Loaded Questions, but didn't get around to a whole stack of others. Pick what you enjoy playing and start a game; we don't all have to play the same one. We can make coffee or you can bring your own beverages. Folks have brought snacks for themselves and to share - it's up to you! We meet in the Great Hall from 6:30-8:30 (and may stay later, if there's a hot game in the works!). For more information, please contact Wendy Mustain via email: wmustain.trinitycathedral@gmail.com.

Walk to Cure Arthritis

This Sunday, June 1st, I will be participating in the Walk to Cure Arthritis.  I have a debilitating, rare, and extremely painful form of arthritis called Ankylosing Spondylitis that has changed my life over the past 1.5 years.  More people have A.S. than have Multiple Sclerosis, yet most people have never even heard of it.

The Sacramento Arthritis Foundation has been a huge source of support for me since my diagnosis last February, allowing me opportunities (ok, so I pushed myself into the opportunities) to testify on healthcare bills, attend advocacy summits, start a support group, and be recognized for my efforts.

This is one of their biggest fundraising events of the year and, with everything they've given to me to keep going, I do what I can to get them $5, $10, $25 of your money. I'm remaining a valuable member of society partly because of them.  If nothing else, please read my story and share it. Knowing is half the battle: http://sacwalktocurearthritis.kintera.org/charis

If you would like to know more about Ankylosing Spondylitis, feel free to contact Charis at this.is.charis@gmail.com

Toiletries for St. Matthew's

It has happened more than once...in I come with a large bag of toiletries from Trinity, and then "wow!  Thanks so much, we had nothing left to give people....you came just in time."

Yes, it is a little thing, but all those little soaps, toothbrushes and shampoo matter a great deal to those who come to St. Matthew's for such basic supplies.  Thanks to all of you who bring them to give.  It is a joyful thing to bring them for their use.

In giving we receive.
