"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
Greetings!

Brian Baker

Last night I passed through the Great Hall and kitchen as the final preparations were being made for Safe Ground dinner.  When I entered the kitchen, I was struck by the large number of teenagers milling about.  It turns out there was a group of teens from Rosemont High School that came last week Wednesday, Friday and then again last night.  I had a chance to talk with them and the one mom who was their chaperone.  They were having a great time creating large trays of beautiful salad.  They were grateful to have this opportunity to serve.  I suggested they take advantage of the opportunity to have dinner with the homeless guests. A couple of the teens' faces lit up at the possibility.  They were eager to tell me about their fundraising efforts.  For the past few weeks they had been selling chocolate bars at school.  They raised over $1,000 which they presented to Loren last night.

It was such a gift to experience the youthful joy and energy of the teens, and their sense of accomplishment and compassion.  I am so glad I had a chance to meet them and witness their ministry.

Blessings,

Brian

David (in the red helmet) finishing the 2013 NCAC
NorCal AIDS Cycle is here!

By the time you read this, one-hundred cyclists plus support crew will have started the four day journey from Beals Point at Folsom Lake. We'll make a big loop through Northern California, passing through Newcastle, Marysville, Gridley, Oroville, Durham, Willows, Williams, Capay Valley, Woodland, Winters, Davis, and finishing up on Sunday at noon at Cesar Chavez park in downtown Sacramento.

I wish to thank each and every one of you for joining our team with your financial support. It's because of you this ride is such a success. I am pleased to say that individually, I exceeded my goal of $7,000. And as of today day our group total surpassed $275,000 to help fund HIV/AIDS service agencies in Northern California.

I must admit, I'm a little apprehensive. 330 miles is a long way to ride, and even though this is my fourth year, I'm still a little nervous, especially considering the hot weather which is forecast. But with the support of the other riders, a first-class support crew, and all of you back home, I know I can make it.

As I did last year, I am dedicating this ride to Ken Piercy, who succumbed to AIDS on April 10th of 2011. For those of you who follow me on Facebook and Twitter (@sierracanon), look for daily updates! And I hope some of you can join us at Cesar Chavez park on Sunday at noon, for our closing ceremony. There will be music, tears, food trucks, and lots of other fun stuff. Again, I am DEEPLY appreciative of your generosity and willingness to support someone with HIV whom you will never know. I love you all.

Bible and Book of Common Prayer Challenge

The goal is to read one chapter in the New Testament, one Psalm, and one of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer each day for one year to anchor each day in scripture, and to become familiar with the beauty of the prayers in the Prayer Book.  Rhonda Canby is the facilitator for this TNAC class.

The Resurrection of Jesus

We will gather to explore the meaning and the implications of the Resurrection of Jesus.  In this text, two of today's most important and popular New Testament scholars--John Dominic Crossan and N.T. Wright--air their very different understandings of the many historical realities and theological meanings of this singular event that separates Christianity from other faith traditions.  The Rev. Canon Tina Campbell and The Rev. Canon Lynell Walker, are the co-facilitators of this class.

The Life of Muhammad

If you have an interest in learning about Muhammad and how Islam began, please join us for a five-week class on the life of Muhammad We will view parts of the PBS documentary each week and discuss what we have learned---and there is much to learn. Susan Hotchkiss is the facilitator for this class.

The Laws of the Spirit by Dan Millman

The Laws of Spirit opens with the story of Dan Millman's encounter with a sage in the wooded hills near his home. Through stories, tests, and experiences in the wild, the sage challenges Millman to examine 12 core principles that underlie human existence: balance, choice, process, presence, compassion, faith, expectation, integrity, action, cycles, surrender, and unity. The book shows how these keys - at the heart of every religion, culture, and moral system - can lead to a deeper sense of meaning, connection, and harmony with the world. It also shows readers how these principles can transform relationships, careers, finance, and health. Vaughn Wolff is the facilitator for this class.

The Art of Hosting Conversations That Matter

Learn how to host meaningful conversations that range from personal to large groups, and recognize the Spirit's presence in our midst. Discover and explore practices that enable courageous leadership in the midst of uncertainty and complex challenges. Empower the reality that everyone is a leader to facilitate change. The Rev. Megan Anderson and The Rev. Kathy Hopner are the co-facilitators of this class.

Caregiver Support Group

Next meeting May 21, 10:30am in the Conference Room

If you are caring for a family member or friend who has Alzheimer's or another dementia, you are at increased risk for stress and health problems. Taking care of yourself through learning about and taking advantage of services that can provide you support and respite is essential. Attending a caregiver support group is one way family caregivers can care for themselves.

Trinity is now hosting a support group on the third Wednesday of every month, from 10:30-12:00, in the upstairs conference room. The group will use materials provided by the Alzheimer's Association and will be facilitated by Jackie McGrath, a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and a former caregiver for her parents who had dementia. For more information contact Jackie (jackiewmcgrath@gmail.com, 712-6561).

Volunteer and Donation Opportunities

Toiletries for St. Matthew's

It has happened more than once...in I come with a large bag of toiletries from Trinity, and then "wow!  Thanks so much, we had nothing left to give people....you came just in time."

Yes, it is a little thing, but all those little soaps, toothbrushes and shampoo matter a great deal to those who come to St. Matthew's for such basic supplies.  Thanks to all of you who bring them to give.  It is a joyful thing to bring them for their use.

In giving we receive.

~~ Carol Savoie

Families there are eager to give a second life to those donations! We take all children's sizes - infant to size 16. Bring your donations to the tubs labeled "Floyd School" at the top of the stairs.

Peanut Butter The Back Snack Program is in need of both peanut butter and tuna so that our supplies can last until the end of the school year. Please drop these off in the same tubs labeled "Floyd School".

Floyd School is off to the Marin Headlands

Marin Headlands behind the Golden Gate Bridge.

Floyd School teachers, parents, and children in the 4th and 5th grades, are planning a field trip to the Marin Headlands. For some children, this will be the first time they have ever seen the ocean. For some it will be the first time they have ever seen the Golden Gate bridge, a national landmark less than 150 miles from their doorstep. For nearly all, it will be an unforgettable experience. For five days and four nights, children will engage in learning about ecosystems, the ocean, animals, birds, and bugs, as well as the history and geography of the San Francisco Bay!

SACT Logo S-ACT "Get Out the Vote" Effort Kicks off !

This week we are taking on a daunting task - we are going into some of the most under-served  neighborhoods in Sacramento and asking people to vote.

We are going to the places politicians don't door knock because they assume people won't vote and have no power.   These communities will go largely ignored by candidates, but have the most at stake in our upcoming elections.  We'll be talking to people how the District Attorney affects them and if they believe everyone deserves health care.  We are asking people to have faith in their own power to change the direction of our community.

Knocking on doors and talking to strangers about our community is an act of faith in our neighbors and in our ability to make a change.  We're asking you to join us.  Will you take four hours this weekend to help make sure the communities with most at stake in this election have the information they need to vote?

It began in August when I picked them up from the airport. My girl from China, Kaiting arrived first and then within the
