"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
| Greetings!
Last week was spectacular. I would like to thank the many, many people who made our Holy Week and Easter so remarkable. I am always amazed by the abundance of joyful industry that goes into Holy Week: florists, singers, instrumentalists, directors, readers, pray-ers, planners, cooks, liturgists, cleaners, egg hiders (as if they were really hidden,) preachers, printers, publishers. The church was beautiful, the music was sublime, the food was delicious . . .
I would like to mention two parts of Holy Week that are quite different from each other. Tenebrae is a simple, contemplative service on Tuesday night that features readings and some of the most beautiful, a capella chanting by a subset of the Cathedral Choir. I appreciate the beauty of the music as well as the simplicity of the service - there is no sermon or communion. You just sit in subdued lighting and let the service wash over you. On the other end of the experiential spectrum is the activity that takes place on the Cathedral campus on Saturday morning. The men's group hosted a delicious breakfast, there were activities such as egg decorating for children, then an egg hunt organized by the youth group. While all this is going on members of the flower committee (as well as family conscripts) and members of the altar guild are busy cleaning, decorating and setting up for Easter. It was if there were people in every nook and cranny of the Cathedral - and there are lots of nooks and crannies. There was joy filled activity everywhere. I was able to take pictures Saturday morning and have posted them here.
I am also very grateful for the send-off for Andrea that took place as part of the Maundy Thursday service. It was a special and tender time for my family and we will never forget the experience of the Bishop and the entire congregation laying hands on us and praying for us. Andrea departed the next morning for Fort Bliss and is about to complete her pre-deployment training and head overseas.
On Friday we had two three-hour midday prayer services. While one group was praying and listening to meditations on the people who participated in the Crucifixion, another group was travelling to various places in Sacramento that represented aspects of brokenness or pain, and bringing prayer and witness. I hope to have a fuller report from the travelling group in a future edition of this e-news.
Holy Week is the single most important, focused time for me each year. I am always impacted by the journey from Palm Sunday, through the Last Supper, Crucifixion and Resurrection. I am grateful for all the people work very hard to create a beautiful, holy and transformational experience.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Welcome to the
2014 Bible and BCP Challenge
+Bishop Beisner is inviting congregations to join in a New Bible Challenge for 2014. The goal is to read one chapter in the New Testament, one Psalm, and one of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer each day for one year. The goal is to not only anchor each day in scripture, but to become familiar with the beauty of the prayers in the Prayer Book.

The Gospel of Judas
Thursday, April 24, 7:00pm in the Assembly Area
If you didn't have the chance to attend The Gnostic Gospels book discussion group, come and learn a bit about these documents while viewing the National Geographic special The Gospel of Judas. You will get a bit of insight as to how these early Christians called gnostics thought and perhaps why they were not able to overcome the authority of the orthodox church to be in existence today as a religious sect. All are invited to Trinity's Assembly Area on April 24th at 7:00 pm to attend this interesting film and discussion.

Trinity Garden Work Day
Saturday, April 26 begins at 9:00am
Volunteers are asked to join in and help with the work of building frames, filling raised beds, and laying walkways in the Trinity Garden (Trinity Alley and 27th). Work begins at 9:00am, and continues until everybody is too tired to work. Dress for dirty working conditions, and bring work gloves and water. Also needed are: shovels to move dirt, and battery powered drills with screwdriver bits to construct the frames for the raised beds. Rain on Friday/Saturday may mean that dirt will not be delivered, and only the construction of raised bed frames will take place (in the solarium). Drop by and help with the completion of this important preparation work so the planting can begin and the garden can yield yummy fresh produce in the upcoming summer months! Work will continue on the following two Saturdays, May 3rd, and May 10th, weather permitting. For more information, please contact Kevin Sanders: kevinlsanders50@gmail.com.

Earth Day Fair This Sunday!
TREE looks forward to celebrating with you our beautiful earth at Trinity's 8th Annual Earth Day Fair, to be held in the courtyard this Sunday, April 27th, 2014, from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm. Come and check out the solar cookers-they really do work, and I use mine regularly in the summer. Pick up your free tomato plant. Be informed about mountain lions, genetically modified food, and solar panels for your house. Buy a stainless steel sports bottle, biodegradable doggy poop bags, and some fair-trade coffee.
And another water saving tip: my neighbor keeps a bucket in her shower to collect the water that runs while heating up. She gets a bucket for every shower and uses it on her potted plants. I started doing this in the kitchen sink with a smaller bucket-and wow! I get a bucket every time.

Jesus Has a Problem with the Christ
April 27 and May 4, at 10:15am in Room A
Morey Lloyd, Facilitator
Saving the whole world is not an easy task. Just ask Jesus. The difficulty comes from those who are being saved!
Most of us do not even know what we need to be saved from, let alone to what we are being saved. Ah, the education of the saved. Not only is it endless, it can take a life-time. And that is what we are offered- a life time of Eternity to know and experience and share the wealth of the Gospel of the Risen Christ. The Awakened Jesus teachings his disciples what it means to be raised from the dead. The first step is walking. It is a long and winding road. Thank God, we have time to spend.

Give to River City Food Bank
ONE DAY TO GIVE
This is Eileen Thomas' eleventh year as the Executive Director of River City Food Bank. Her job is also her passion. She cares deeply about the health and well being of our community, and the most basic component of that health is nutritious food for families. In over 45 years of operation, RCFB's mission continues to focus on emergency food assistance. They provide a three day supply of nutritionally balanced food, nutrition education, community referrals and assistance to people within the city and county of Sacramento who are working toward self reliance.
On Tuesday, May 6th, she asks you to participate in the BIG Day of Giving, where over a 24 hour period from midnight to 11:59pm, River City Food Bank will join 400 other nonprofits to raise $1 million. On May 6th, starting at 12:00am midnight for 24 hours until 11:59pm, visit givelocalnow.org to help RCFB reach their goal of $10,000.
OR...EVERY TIME YOU SHOP
If you regularly shop at Save Mart, Smart Foods, FoodMax, or Lucky for groceries you can present your S.H.A.R.E.S. card every time you shop, and RCFB will receive a few cents on each purchase. At the last report Eileen said they received over $400 on the last check and which was for a quarter of the year.
S.H.A.R.E.S. CARDS ARE AVAILABLE AT THE WELCOME CENTER WHEN IT IS STAFFED ON SUNDAYS, AT THE OFFICE ON WEEKDAYS, OR YOU CAN GET ONE FROM ME at church or call me, Annette Braddon-Walker, at 456-2613. (If no answer leave a message and I'll call you back.)
OR...BOTH! River City Food Bank provides remarkable services to the needy in our community. Please help any way you can!

Floyd School is off to the Marin Headlands
 | | Marin Headlands behind the Golden Gate Bridge. |
Floyd School teachers, parents, and children in the 4th and 5th grades, are planning a field trip to the Marin Headlands. For some children, this will be the first time they have ever seen the ocean. For some it will be the first time they have ever seen the Golden Gate bridge, a national landmark less than 150 miles from their doorstep. For nearly all, it will be an unforgettable experience. For five days and four nights, children will engage in learning about ecosystems, the ocean, animals, birds, and bugs, as well as the history and geography of the San Francisco Bay!
