"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"
|
|
Greetings!

Welcome to Holy Week! For me, Christianity has been a spiritual path of incremental progress. After decades of trying to follow Jesus, I can look back and see that I have less fear and anxiety, am more able to remain open-hearted toward others, and have more peace then I had in the past. This progress has come from participating in the worship, study and prayer and has been enhanced by the cycle of the church seasons. One of the most important times in the church year is Holy Week. Holy week invites us to enter deeply into the last week of Jesus life. We move from Jesus triumphal and expectation-filled entry into Jerusalem through the Last Supper where Jesus washes his disciples feet, and Judas betrays him, to Jesus' crucifixion and burial. In Holy Week we are confronted with the violence in our world and the violence in our own hearts. We are also confronted with God's abiding and costly love and the mystery of the Cross. I encourage you to enter as deeply as you can into your spiritual practices this Holy Week - look at this time as a concentrated Lent. I also encourage you to attend as many of the Holy Week services as you can. The journey through these services is carefully designed to shape our souls. You can find a schedule of these services on our website by following this link.
Blessings,
Brian

Welcome to the
2014 Bible and BCP Challenge
+Bishop Beisner is inviting congregations to join in a New Bible Challenge for 2014. The goal is to read one chapter in the New Testament, one Psalm, and one of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer each day for one year. The goal is to not only anchor each day in scripture, but to become familiar with the beauty of the prayers in the Prayer Book.

The Jesus I Never Knew
by Philip Yancey
Through April 13 at 10:15 in Room A
Facilitator: George (Bud) Swank
"No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same."
Phillip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work-his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection-and ultimately who he was and why he came. Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to transform us radically and strengthen our faith.

Maundy Thursday Service for
Children and Families
Thursday, April 17 at 4:30pm
Sharing in our faith stories help us to know that this great story is ours, and that we, too, have an active role in it. At Christmas the story becomes real and tangible for children as they take part in the journey to the stable as angels, shepherds or kings. On Maundy Thursday we have a wonderful opportunity to explore and experience one of our most important stories: the last supper Jesus shared with his friends. We'll wash feet, share the bread and wine, and clear and wash the altar as we leave the space empty for the transformation of the resurrection. Maundy Thursday sets the stage for the wonder and joy of Easter. Please join us for this engaging, interactive service designed especially for children. All are welcome!

Stations of the City Friday, April 18 On Good Friday Rev. Kathy Hopner and Rev. Megan Anderson will lead a stations of the city liturgy. This service blends elements of Stations of the Cross with elements of contemporary city living. Stations of the cross originated as a way in which Christians could take a sort of pilgrimage journey reflecting on the last moments of Jesus' life. This Good Friday we will share the story of Jesus' last hours while walking to sites in need of justice work such as Loaves and Fishes, the hospital, and the RT station. The Stations Journey will start with worship at the Cathedral at noon and will end back at the Cathedral before the main Good Friday vigil has concluded. If you would like to offer a short reflection at one of our stops or would like to be involved in the stations in any other way, please let us know! Questions? Contact megan@trinitycathedral.org |

Alzheimer's/Dementia
Family Caregiver
Support Group
Next meeting is Wednesday, April 16th
If you are caring for a family member or friend who has Alzheimer's or another dementia, you are at increased risk for stress and health problems. Taking care of yourself through learning about and taking advantage of services that can provide you support and respite is essential. Attending a caregiver support group is one way family caregivers can care for themselves.
Trinity is now hosting a support group on the third Wednesday of every month, from 10:30-12:00, in the upstairs conference room. The group will use materials provided by the Alzheimer's Association and will be facilitated by Jackie McGrath, a volunteer with the Alzheimer's Association and a former caregiver for her parents who had dementia. For more information contact Jackie (jackiewmcgrath@gmail.com, 712-6561).

The Gospel of Judas
Thursday, April 24, 7:00pm in the Assembly Area
If you didn't have the chance to attend The Gnostic Gospels book discussion group, come and learn a bit about these documents while viewing the National Geographic special The Gospel of Judas. You will get a bit of insight as to how these early Christians called gnostics thought and perhaps why they were not able to overcome the authority of the orthodox church to be in existence today as a religious sect. All are invited to Trinity's Assembly Area on April 24th at 7:00 pm to attend this interesting film and discussion.

TREE Tip
Come to TREE's Earth Day Fair: Sunday April 27.
TREE wishes you a joyful Easter and hopes you will celebrate our beautiful earth with us at Trinity's 8th Annual Earth Day Fair, to be held in the courtyard on Sunday, April 27th, 2014, from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm. Come and check out the solar cookers-they really do work, and I use mine regularly in the summer. Be informed about mountain lions, genetically modified food, and solar panels for your house. Buy a stainless steel sports bottle, biodegradable doggy poop bags, and some fair-trade coffee.
I hope you are reading all the water-saving tips in the Sacramento Bee recently. The rain has been glorious, but the drought is not over. We must abolish those lawns although my grandchildren love to play on ours. Soil Born Farms is having a wild flower celebration on Saturday, May 3rd, 10 am to 5 pm called Wildflower Wonders, with California Heartland Plants and Native Plant Sale. This year is the time to shift over to those drought-resistant and native plants in the garden. Info at info@soilborn.org or sacvalley.cnps.org

Floyd School is off to the Marin Headlands
 | | Marin Headlands behind the Golden Gate Bridge. |
Floyd School teachers, parents, and children in the 4th and 5th grades, are planning a field trip to the Marin Headlands. For some children, this will be the first time they have ever seen the ocean. For some it will be the first time they have ever seen the Golden Gate bridge, a national landmark less than 150 miles from their doorstep. For nearly all, it will be an unforgettable experience. For five days and four nights, children will engage in learning about ecosystems, the ocean, animals, birds, and bugs, as well as the history and geography of the San Francisco Bay!
In order to make this experience a reality, funds must be raised to pay for the expenses involved: transportation, meals, accommodations, fees, and insurance. The cost for each child is $150.00. Floyd School is the adopted school of

Trinity Cathedral, which means the school is an outreach project. The school is a 100 percent poverty school and because of that, Trinity has undertaken a fund-raising campaign to make sure every 4th and 5th grade child (all 67 of them!) has the opportunity to go to the ocean this year. Can you help?
Our campaign asks you to sponsor one child to experience this opportunity. If you are unable to fully sponsor a child, would you be willing to donate a different amount to help the schoolchildren get to the Marin Headlands? We hope you will.
Please make checks to Trinity Cathedral and put 'Floyd Trip' in the memo line.
