Greetings!

The Rev. Andrea Baker

Many of you know that Andrea, my wife, is an Episcopal priest serving at Faith Church in Cameron Park.  She is also a chaplain in the Army Reserve. Andrea has recently been called to active duty and will be deploying.  While I am happy to provide more details in face-to-face conversation, it is important to be circumspect when using social media and broadcast emails. Consequently I won't be mentioning exact location or time-frames in this note.  I ask you to be judicious in your social media postings.  Once she is connected with her unit, we will know more about what can be shared.

Unfortunately Andrea won't be able to be with us at Trinity Cathedral on a Sunday morning before her departure.  Her worship, pastoral and preaching obligations at Faith Church these next weeks take precedence.  I ask you to pray for my family, and particularly Andrea during this deployment.

Resurrexit with Sacramento Baroque on YouTube!
For those of you missed the wonderful concert by the Sacramento Baroque Soloists in February, there is a clip from the concert now on YouTube. Resurrexit joined Sacramento Baroque for the exquisite motet "Lobet den Herren, alle Heiden" by Johann Sebastian Bach. Due to their technical difficulty, Bach's motets are not often performed by church choirs. So enjoy this clip from our Cathedral Music Series!

Welcome to the
2014 Bible and BCP Challenge

+Bishop Beisner is inviting congregations to join in a New Bible Challenge for 2014.  The goal is to read one chapter in the New Testament, one Psalm, and one of the prayers in the Book of Common Prayer each day for one year.  The goal is to not only anchor each day in scripture, but to become familiar with the beauty of the prayers in the Prayer Book.

Contact Canon Walker if you have further questions at:  lwalker259@aol.com

The Writing Group has agreed to continue meeting on Thursdays, 4:30-6:00 in the Conference Room. In an informal gathering, we write to a prompt for about 20 minutes, and then, if we choose, listen to each other share all or part of our writing. Feedback is always positive and uplifting in the manner of Amherst Writers Groups, founded by Pat Schneider, who wrote Wake Up Laughing: A Spiritual Autobiography; Writing Alone and With Others; and How The Light Gets In: Writing As A Spiritual Practice.

Lay Chaplains Are Available to Support You

Hospitalizations, whether planned or unexpected, are a stressful time for families. Trinity is blessed with a team of lay chaplains who are available to visit and support you when you or a family member is in the hospital. They also will continue visiting during recovery in a residential facility or at home. Lay chaplains augment visits by clergy and provide reassurance as well as prayers and communion if the person desires. Please call the church office (446-2513) or Cherie Chamness (442-9194) if you would like a chaplain visit.

6:15pm - Dinner ($7.00)

7:00pm - Classes

Classes

(Classes will not meet on April 10 so participants can attend Dean Baker's class on Forgiveness in the Assembly Area)

Book Study: Radical Forgiveness: God's Call to Unconditional Love by Brian Zahnd

Rev. Anne Arthur and Canon Walker, Facilitators

Class meets in the Conference Room.

Recover the true beauty of Christianity as found in forgiveness. If Christianity is to be a compelling and relevant voice in the 21st century, it needs a return to its roots. Beginning with the horror of the Holocaust, Radical Forgiveness explores what forgiveness means - and how far it should go - in the real world of human suffering. Zahnd tackles questions such as: Should we always forgive? Is forgiveness always even possible? Does forgiveness enable evil? Does it sacrifice justice? Are there any limits?

Book Study: The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagel

Susan Hotchkiss, Facilitator

Class meets in the Cathedral Bookshop.

Elaine Pagel's book gives a clear, readable and effective introduction to the gnostic tradition within the early church. These early writings, defined as heretical by the second century, were a challenge to early orthodoxy. Pagel's book shows what impact the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts in 1945 has on modern interpretations of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

2014 Bible and Book of Common Prayer Challenge

Rhonda Canby, Facilitator

Class meets in Classroom F

This second "Bible Challenge" from +Bishop Beisner is a much lighter read! It invites participants to read a chapter from the New Testament, a Psalm, and one of the prayers from the Book of Common Prayer each day beginning March 5th and ending December 30th. The Bible Challenge's goal is to re-acquaint us with scripture and our Prayer Book as part of our own spiritual journey.

Book Study: The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Cynthia Bourgeault

The Rev. Kathy Hopner, Facilitator

Class meets in Classroom J

Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity-yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there. She then applies her own reasoning and intuition, informed by the wisdom of the ages-old Christian contemplative tradition. What emerges is a radical view of Mary Magdalene as Jesus's most important disciple, the one he considered to understand his teaching best. Cynthia shows how an understanding of Mary Magdalene can revitalize contemporary Christianity, how Christians and others can, through her, find their way to Jesus's original teachings and apply them to their modern lives.

The Jesus I Never Knew

by Philip Yancey

Through April 13 at 10:15 in Room A

Facilitator: George (Bud) Swank

"No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same."

Phillip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work-his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection-and ultimately who he was and why he came. Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to transform us radically and strengthen our faith.

Join Trinity members who have been working with Sacramento Area Congregations Together (Sacramento ACT), in partnership with other local congregations, to address issues related to homelessness. In recent months, we have advocated for the provision of additional badly-needed low-income housing within our County and the City of Sacramento.

Come and learn more about these important social justice issues. Everyone is welcome!

At this meeting, we will plan the agenda for a congregational update scheduled for the evening of Monday, May 19.

The Easter Bunny needs your help!

We need filled plastic Easter eggs for our annual Easter egg hunt. Please bring 10 - 12 plastic eggs filled with a piece of candy to church on the Sundays before Friday, April 18th, or drop them off at the church office. We have bags of empty eggs in the back of the church and in the Great Hall - please take a bag of eggs and bring them back filled. If you'd like to "recycle" your plastic eggs after Easter - bring them to church and we'll use them next year.

Floyd School is off to the Marin Headlands

Marin Headlands behind the Golden Gate Bridge.

Floyd School teachers, parents, and children in the 4th and 5th grades, are planning a field trip to the Marin Headlands. For some children, this will be the first time they have ever seen the ocean. For some it will be the first time they have ever seen the Golden Gate bridge, a national landmark less than 150 miles from their doorstep. For nearly all, it will be an unforgettable experience. For five days and four nights, children will engage in learning about ecosystems, the ocean, animals, birds, and bugs, as well as the history and geography of the San Francisco Bay!

In order to make this experience a reality, funds must be raised to pay for the expenses involved: transportation, meals, accommodations, fees, and insurance. The cost for each child is $150.00. Floyd School is the adopted school of

Trinity Cathedral, which means the school is an outreach project. The school is a 100 percent poverty school and because of that, Trinity has undertaken a fund-raising campaign to make sure every 4th and 5th grade child (all 67 of them!) has the opportunity to go to the ocean this year. Can you help?

Our campaign asks you to sponsor one child to experience this opportunity. If you are unable to fully sponsor a child, would you be willing to donate a different amount to help the schoolchildren get to the Marin Headlands? We hope you will.

Please make checks to Trinity Cathedral and put 'Floyd Trip' in the memo line.
