Greetings!

Brian Baker

Forgiveness is important.  Forgiveness is essential.  According to Desmond Tutu, we won't have any future as humans if we don't learn to forgive. According to Jesus, our ability to experience forgiveness is dependent on our ability to forgive.  We must forgive seventy-times seven times - meaning without limit.  Jesus models this forgiveness when he prays, "Father forgive them, they know not what they do."

But what exactly is forgiveness?  If I forgive someone, do I need to then allow them to continue to their behavior, even if it harmful?  What if the hurt is so deep that I can't bring myself to forgive?  What if I can't stop feeling angry?  Does someone need to repent for me to forgive them?

These questions highlight how complicated forgiveness can be.  For the past several weeks, people at Trinity Cathedral have been studying Brian Zahnd's Radical Forgiveness.  It is a very good book and I recommend it.

As part of our study of this book, I am giving three lectures on forgiveness.  I have given two of them so far.  The third is scheduled for Sunday April 6 at 10:15am and again Thursday April 10 at 7pm.  You can watch my first lecture here and my second here.  If you attended these classes, or if you watch these on video, and you have questions or suggestions for my final class, please email me at bnbaker83@gmail.com.

Blessings,

Brian

BENEFIT ORGAN RECITAL A BIG SUCCESS!

A huge thank you to everyone who turned out for the organ recital to benefit NorCal AIDS Cycle. All told, the evening earned over $2,000 for NCAC, which helps to fund agencies in our community, serving those suffering for HIV/AIDS.

For those who intended to come to the recital, but couldn't make it, you can still make a contribution, and make a big difference in the life of someone you and I will never meet!

Thank you,

Book Study: Radical Forgiveness: God's Call to Unconditional Love by Brian Zahnd

Rev. Anne Arthur and Canon Walker, Facilitators

Class meets in the Conference Room.

Recover the true beauty of Christianity as found in forgiveness. If Christianity is to be a compelling and relevant voice in the 21st century, it needs a return to its roots. Beginning with the horror of the Holocaust, Radical Forgiveness explores what forgiveness means - and how far it should go - in the real world of human suffering. Zahnd tackles questions such as: Should we always forgive? Is forgiveness always even possible? Does forgiveness enable evil? Does it sacrifice justice? Are there any limits?

Book Study: The Gnostic Gospels by Elaine Pagel

Susan Hotchkiss, Facilitator

Class meets in the Cathedral Bookshop.

Elaine Pagel's book gives a clear, readable and effective introduction to the gnostic tradition within the early church. These early writings, defined as heretical by the second century, were a challenge to early orthodoxy. Pagel's book shows what impact the discovery of the Nag Hammadi texts in 1945 has on modern interpretations of the life, death and resurrection of Jesus.

2014 Bible and Book of Common Prayer Challenge

Rhonda Canby, Facilitator

Class meets in Classroom F

This second "Bible Challenge" from +Bishop Beisner is a much lighter read! It invites participants to read a chapter from the New Testament, a Psalm, and one of the prayers from the Book of Common Prayer each day beginning March 5th and ending December 30th. The Bible Challenge's goal is to re-acquaint us with scripture and our Prayer Book as part of our own spiritual journey.

Book Study: The Meaning of Mary Magdalene: Discovering the Woman at the Heart of Christianity by Cynthia Bourgeault

The Rev. Kathy Hopner, Facilitator

Class meets in Classroom J

Mary Magdalene is one of the most influential symbols in the history of Christianity-yet, if you look in the Bible, you'll find only a handful of verses that speak of her. How did she become such a compelling saint in the face of such paltry evidence? In her effort to answer that question, Cynthia Bourgeault examines the Bible, church tradition, art, legend, and newly discovered texts to see what's there. She then applies her own reasoning and intuition, informed by the wisdom of the ages-old Christian contemplative tradition. What emerges is a radical view of Mary Magdalene as Jesus's most important disciple, the one he considered to understand his teaching best. Cynthia shows how an understanding of Mary Magdalene can revitalize contemporary Christianity, how Christians and others can, through her, find their way to Jesus's original teachings and apply them to their modern lives.

This Sunday

The Jesus I Never Knew

by Philip Yancey

Through April 13 at 10:15 in Room A

Facilitator: George (Bud) Swank

"No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same."

Phillip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work-his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection-and ultimately who he was and why he came. Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to transform us radically and strengthen our faith.

The Trinity Spirits Softball Team

starts spring training!

Tuesday, April 1, 6:30pm at Cal Middle School

This fun and happy breed of athletes gathers on April 1st (no joke!) for what Coach Doug Dierlam calls a "throw around." The usual suspects will be there, but newcomers are always welcome, so if you enjoy softball and a fun team spirit, think about coming to our first practice. It will be very low key - just warming up our arms (some of us refer to it as chipping off the rust...) and taking a few swings. We'll be at Cal Middle School, on the west field (closest to Land Park Drive -- click here for a map) starting at 6:30 pm. Bring your glove and have some fun!

The Spirits and members of the Faith Presbyterian team

form a prayer circle after a 2013 game.

League play starts on Tuesday, April 22nd -- we always play on Tuesday nights at Roosevelt Park at 10th & P Streets. There is a registration fee for the season and we have team shirts for sale. If you have any questions, please contact our fearless leader, Doug at

dnarock@pacbell.net.

It's a great group and a wonderful league. Join in, or come out and root for us during the season! Go Spirits!

Palm Cross Palm Crosses for

Palm Sunday

Join us on Sunday, April 6th in the Great Hall during coffee hour to help make crosses. There will be palm fronds, instructions and lot of laughter.

Volunteer and Donation Opportunities

The Easter Bunny needs your help!

We need filled plastic Easter eggs for our annual Easter egg hunt. Please bring 10 - 12 plastic eggs filled with a piece of candy to church on the Sundays before Friday, April 18th, or drop them off at the church office. We have bags of empty eggs in the back of the church and in the Great Hall - please take a bag of eggs and bring them back filled. If you'd like to "recycle" your plastic eggs after Easter - bring them to church and we'll use them next year.

Floyd School is off to Marin Headlands

The fourth, fifth and sixth grade students at Leatatta Floyd Elementary, our adopted school, are planning their annual trip to Science and Ocean Camp this year. They will spend 5 days learning about ocean life, looking at pond water under a microscope and visiting the Mammal Care Station in San Francisco.

For most of the children this will be their first trip out of the Sacramento area. As many of you may know this experience is so important for the children for many reasons. This is an opportunity see other cities and natural areas, it gives them experiences that help with reading comprehension, writing skills and a sense of self. For many this is their first time away from home.

It costs about $150 per child to attend the camp. Floyd School is a 100% poverty school and even though the staff has worked with the students to sell cookies to earn money for their trip they need lots of help.

The students have drawn a picture of themselves and have written a paragraph about what they like to do. We are asking that you sponsor a child for $50 or more if you can.

You will get the self portrait and paragraph of a student that you choose for your donation. After the group has come back from the trip they will write to you telling of their experiences.

Please help out with $50 or more if you can. You can choose a student from the bulletin board in the Great Hall or contact Nancy Tennyson at 916-481-3546 or nntennyson@gmail.com. Checks are payable to Trinity Cathedral and in the memo line write 'Floyd Trip'.

FREE Car Wash at Trinity
10am - 1pm on April 26, May 31 and June 28

This is an effort at outreach to our neighbors and the community: no money, no donations, just a humble "good neighbor" effort at being of service.

Needs:

  • Two (or more) people willing to be of service.
  • Two five gallon buckets
  • Old bath towels for drying

If you can help contact Ron McCormack at 916-451-7246.

Family Promise

Family Promise still has need of volunteers

April 6-13

Hello All - A big thank you to all that have volunteered their time and talent for our next hosting of Family Promise April 6-13. The sign up board in the hall by the book store is filling nicely!! Among our remaining needs are people to come and "interact" with the children and just be friendly non-judgmental faces for our families to meet. Parents, you can bring your children to participate!! The time commitment is from 5:30pm-8:00pm on the night you volunteer. And, as an added bonus, you will be invited to the dinner being served. Come and see what this wonderful Ministry is all about. Any questions: contact lylegramling@gmail.com

Hosting International Students

I would like to introduce myself. I am a 69 year old female that hosted 2 international students this past year. I have had a fabulous experience and would like to share it with you. One of my students was from China and the other from Brazil.

Kaiting from China
It began in August when I picked them up from the airport. My girl from China, Kaiting arrived first and then within the next 2 days Julia arrived from Brazil. Now I have raised 2 sons on my own, but really had no experience with girls. I just want to let you know that it was a new horizon.

Did I shop for my boys, yes. They were not terribly interested, so they wore what I purchased. Not so with girls, as you with girls are aware. This takes time and much musing over color, fit, accessories and make-up. Wow I was a little blown away at first, but soon I was in step. As you are probably aware the dress for homecoming is not the same as the one for the prom. We went to outlets, department stores, shoe stores, make-up counters and then back again once the decision had been made. Wow! Was it fun? Yes and an experience I will always cherish.

Julia from Brazil
My girls were very active at school. Kaiting took up golf, math club, Asian club and band. She plays the piano! Julia took up tennis and won every game she played in Singles, making her the champion for the district in the league!

Meals, I had forgotten, kept me busy daily! These girls enjoy good food and are ready to experience whatever is put in front of them. They said I was a gourmet cook. I really think that is a stretch, but why argue.

I live in Sacramento, California, so weather is usually fairly mild and we have many sunny days. Winters this year were mild, so we were able to go to friends to swim, have barbeques and share picnics.

Both girls attended the episcopal church with me and enjoyed potlucks, a welcome group and the music.

Activities included movies, both foreign and domestic, a trip to the mountains to spend time in a cabin and enjoy the little town of Murphy's, and soon a trip to Monterey and then a final excursion to Seattle.

I cannot tell you what a wonderful experience this has been for me and would like to urge you to consider hosting a student. The cultural education and exchange will serve to help us to better understand and celebrate our differences.

I wish you this fantastic experience and I would love to assist you in obtaining a student from the country of your choice. This is a high school program and students that come are usually sophomores or juniors.

Best of luck and hope to hear from you soon.

Carolyn Conrad

ISE Representative

My contact is at the following email: caroleenamoonshine@gmail.com

Note: When you email me please let me know what country you would be interested in and what interest you would like the student to have. The only real requirements are that you as the host family have English as your first language and it is spoken in the household. One of the requirements is to further their English competency. Geographically you may live anywhere in the United States.
