"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Greetings!
Baptisms and Confirmations, Weddings, Ordinations - These are all celebrations of vocation. At the 9:00 service this last Sunday we once again celebrated baptism of "the Church's newest Christians!" At the 11:15 service we committed ourselves to helping adults who are preparing for baptism and confirmation this coming Easter. This Saturday at 7:00 PM we gather to celebrate the ordinations to the priesthood of two members of Trinity: The Reverend Megan Anderson and the Reverend Anne Arthur. This past summer people from throughout our diocese (and beyond) came together when Megan and Anne joined six other "ordinands" whom +Bishop Beisner ordained as transitional deacons. These events are a good time to pause and reflect on what it means to hear and respond to God's call and our response. Our Christian belief is that everybody is "called and formed from your mother's womb" (Isaiah, Chapter 44). The big question is our discernment of that call and response to it. Seeking baptism is the primal response. Celebrating the Eucharist together is a regular response. Seeking marriage and/or ordination to be a deacon or priest may be an additional "Yes!" to the Divine. This Saturday we join Anne and Megan in the celebration of their response to that divine call to be priest to all of us. Their realization of the call to priesthood was awesome. Their journey to that goal was arduous. And here we are! Join in prayer and support as Anne and Megan move into this new vocation. Jerry Paré

Do you like to write? Do you like giving and receiving purely positive feedback? Then come join us in the Conference Room every Thursday afternoon from 4:30 to 6 p.m. Using a quotation or short piece of writing as a springboard, we write quietly for about twenty minutes and then, if we choose, share all or part of our writing with the group. Deacon Steve to Take Leave of Absence
 | |
Nelson & Steve with the Trinity Contingent:
Gay Pride 2013
|
It has become necessary for me to take a leave of absence from my duties at the Cathedral to care for Nelson, my spouse and partner of thirty-one years. As many of you are aware, Nelson has been diagnosed with colon cancer and is undergoing treatment and chemotherapy. At this point, he is coping well but it is a tender and stressful time for both of us. We are hopeful that in time we can both resume a more regular routine and that I can get back to work as your Deacon.
Nelson and I are most grateful for your prayers and the many acts of kindness since his emergency surgery and diagnosis in mid-December. Many of you have generously signed up to bring Sunday and Wednesday dinner for us. What a blessing!
I am hoping to resume serving at the altar on Sundays whenever Nelson's condition permits, but I will not be at the Cathedral weekdays. Please know that although I'm on a leave of absence, my heart is open and with all of you. I can be reached at either my cell (204-4955) or e-mail (deaconskiff@gmail.com).
Blessings, Steve+ |

From Pastor Bob...
I have retired. I am not leaving. At least not in any way final. Bishop Beisner has encouraged me to supply in the Northern California diocese and I am planning to do
 | | Pastor Bob with Rev. Anne McKeever |
that. I will also be part of a rotation, smaller me thinks than previous, to preach and preside at the Cathedral and St. Paul's so you will see me around, just not as much as you have. In addition I will supply for the Sierra Pacific Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and their Bishop Holmerud. I am so grateful for your sharing ministry with me in this Holy place - Trinity Cathedral. As a Lutheran Pastor I have acquired a joy and trust in things "Anglican" from the congregation, staff and clergy. Thank you for all your kind and gracious good words as I leave, as well as receiving me as one of our family in Christ.
Pastor Bob Phillippi

Trinity Cathedral's Organ
Trinity Cathedral's 1983 Reuter pipe organ has served the Cathedral well for thirty years. It has played thousands of services and hundreds of weddings and memorial services. While not the largest pipe organ in Sacramento, it's tonal qualities are among the best, if not the best in the community; it is known for its refined, elegant sound. It has been played by some of the world's great organists, who have complemented it's fine tonal quality.
Like anything of a certain age, it has started to manifest some problems in the last few years, which I have done my best to work around. However, this has presented many challenges, some of which are increasingly difficult to deal with. After careful assessment, our organ technician and other consultants have made specific recommendations for work to be done on the organ.
-
Replacement of the façade pipes, (the large visible pipes in the front) which are collapsing under their own weight, due to the use of sub-standard zinc in the original installation.
-
Thorough cleaning of organ interior, and regulation and cleaning of some pipes. The interior has thirty years of dust, plaster, and Christmas tree needles (!), which will cause mechanical problems if not cleaned up.
-
Updating of electronics in the console (which have become increasingly unreliable) to twenty-first century standards.
-
Replacing the main air reservoir, damaged when a pipe burst in the furnace and flooded the blower room. The reservoir controls the air-supply which makes the pipes speak.
-
Releathering the swell expressions shades (ie. louvres which make the sound louder or softer).
The total cost of this project is estimated to be around $50,000, and we'd like to get the work done before any of these problems become critical. In the coming months, you'll be hearing about a fund-raising campaign to keep the music playing! Anyone with specific questions about the Cathedral organ project are invited to contact me at any time: sierracanon@gmail.com or 916-446-2513 ext 224.

CLASSES FOR EPIPHANY 1
Through February 6
from 7 to 8:30 pm on
First Peter
Presented by the Rev. Dr. Peter Rodgers and four Fuller seminarians.
The First Epistle of Peter is a short and beautiful letter that outlines the heart of Christian faith and life. It is written to Christians in Asia Minor in the first century who are experiencing "suffering for the name of Christ." Peter writes to encourage them to stand fast and live Christ-like lives in the midst of these trials. Rich in Old testament quotations and allusions to the words of Jesus, and their application to God's people, the letter is as relevant today as it was in the days f earliest Christianity. For five weeks we will study together this remarkable letter.
The Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan
Presented by Susan Hotchkiss and Andre Jensen.
Come join us as we explore Jesus as we've never experienced him before.
"In Zealot, Reza Aslan doesn't just synthesize research and reimagine a lost world, though he does those things very well. Aslan rips Jesus out of all the contexts we thought he belonged in and holds him forth as someone entirely new. This is Jesus as a passionate Jew, a violent revolutionary, a fanatical ideologue, an odd and scary and extraordinarily interesting man." - Judith Shulevitz
Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian
Presented by Rev. Anne McKeever
This is a five-session series for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology: Who was Jesus? Who is God? What is salvation? How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community? Each week we'll view and then discuss a short DVD segment of a lecture and discussion led by Marcus Borg, retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture in the Philosophy Department of Oregon State University and the author of nineteen books.

The Jesus I Never Knew
by Philip Yancey
February 9 through April 13
Facilitator: George (Bud) Swank
"No one who meets Jesus ever stays the same."
Phillip Yancey offers a new and different perspective on the life of Christ and his work-his teaching, his miracles, his death and resurrection-and ultimately who he was and why he came. Yancey presents a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to transform us radically and strengthen our faith.
