Greetings!

What a great dinner and meeting we had last Sunday! The dinner was fun and festive with 212 people joining the fun. I am grateful for all the hard work that Candace and Doss Miller and all of the Table Hosts put into making the dinner such a success. At the meeting, we heard from lots of people as they shared aspects of life at Trinity that have blessed them. We also elected Pat Keasts, Jason Lyons, Curry Mayer, Pat Ronne and Anita Williams to the vestry and Grant Bakewell, Tori Beck, Sue Clark, Jerry Daszko, Matt Fitch, George Henry, Mary Hustler, Jeanne Jurgens, McKensie Pimley, Gina Schumacher and Susan Van Dyke to represent Trinity Cathedral at our

Diocesan Convention in Santa Rosa in November. I am grateful for everyone who was willing to be considered for election.
I wanted to let you know that I have been elected to serve an unexpired term of 18 months on the Executive Council of the Episcopal Church. While The General Convention, which meets every three years, is the official governing body of the Episcopal Church, the Executive Council is the governing board between General Conventions. I will be representing Province VIII of the Episcopal Church, which is comprised of the dioceses in the western United States. The previous province representative needed to resign and Bishop Beisner nominated me as a replacement.
The Executive Council meets three times a year. The next meeting is next week in Baltimore. I will leave on Tuesday and return Friday. I know there will be many items we will be addressing including restructuring the Episcopal Church and revising our theology of marriage.
I look forward to reporting back what I learn and experience in Baltimore at my first meeting of the Executive Council.
Blessings,
Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Deacon Skiff Needs A Little Help
From A Friend
Do you like to draw? Can you translate a concept to a sketch pad? If the answer is yes, Deacon Steve Skiffington has a great opportunity for you to exercise your talent!
He has an idea for our Safe Ground and Community Dinners ministries and needs to present it to the program leaders. Since a picture is worth a thousand words, he would like a simple, sketched layout to go along with his proposal. If you can meet with Steve for a few minutes in the Great Hall, he will explain what he has in mind. Then you can take it from there. You don't need to be a master artist, just a humble drawing will do! If you can help, please contact him at deaconskiff@gmail.com or 916-204-4955. You will be blessed.

CLASSES FOR EPIPHANY 1
Through February 6
from 7 to 8:30 pm on
First Peter
Presented by the Rev. Dr. Peter Rodgers and four Fuller seminarians.
The First Epistle of Peter is a short and beautiful letter that outlines the heart of Christian faith and life. It is written to Christians in Asia Minor in the first century who are experiencing "suffering for the name of Christ." Peter writes to encourage them to stand fast and live Christ-like lives in the midst of these trials. Rich in Old testament quotations and allusions to the words of Jesus, and their application to God's people, the letter is as relevant today as it was in the days f earliest Christianity. For five weeks we will study together this remarkable letter.
The Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan
Presented by Susan Hotchkiss and Andre Jensen.
Come join us as we explore Jesus as we've never experienced him before.
"In Zealot, Reza Aslan doesn't just synthesize research and reimagine a lost world, though he does those things very well. Aslan rips Jesus out of all the contexts we thought he belonged in and holds him forth as someone entirely new. This is Jesus as a passionate Jew, a violent revolutionary, a fanatical ideologue, an odd and scary and extraordinarily interesting man." - Judith Shulevitz
Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian
Presented by Rev. Anne McKeever
This is a five-session series for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology: Who was Jesus? Who is God? What is salvation? How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community? Each week we'll view and then discuss a short DVD segment of a lecture and discussion led by Marcus Borg, retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture in the Philosophy Department of Oregon State University and the author of nineteen books.

Trinity Hiking Guild
Dear Hikers,
I have been down with the terrible head cold/bronchitis that has been circulating for the last 5 days. Haven't had a decent nights sleep during this period, and am not willing to brave the damp and cold weather this weekend just to see if I am over this bug yet. So, I will be wrapped in warm blankets in front of the fireplace on Saturday morning, thinking about how good it will be to be back in good health with good weather in front of us and a dry road under our feet.
Travel to Texas for me followed by this illness has kept me away from church the last several weeks, but I hope to see many of you this coming Sunday, the 2nd.
I will get a plan out for the next scheduled hike set for Feb 15th next week so people can get it on their calendar.
Keep Healthy!!!

UPDATE: Affordable Housing
in Sacramento County
The January 28 Board of Supervisor's Hearing could not by any means be described as a victory for affordable housing advocates, but thanks to Trinity Cathedral members and many other faith leaders in Sacramento Act, the leadership of the Sacramento Housing Alliance and the high visibility presence of many other low-income housing advocates, including widely-respected former County Supervisor Grantland Johnson, we succeed in blocking some of the worst elements in the proposed revised Affordable Housing Ordinance for Sacramento County. The changes had been championed by the Building Industry Association (BIA), as a part of their effort to gut the current ordinance and remove all affordable housing mandates for developers. Click here for a link to a News & Review article which is an excellent description of the hearing and the vote.
After a number of prior hearings, the County Board of Supervisors had asked staff to come back to them with a proposal for a "fee-out" ordinance so that developers would be freed from any obligation to build affordable housing, and would only be required to contribute a per square foot fee to a Housing Trust Fund. As expected, the staff came back with a recommendation of $2.25 fee per square foot, which we see as impossibly low, also proposing the addition of a fee cap for larger developments so that developers would end up paying less for huge developments. After intensive and articulate public testimony and the presentation of letters of support for affordable housing from many of our state elected officials, followed by lively debate and a great deal of negotiation among the supervisors, mostly led by Supervisor Phil Serna, we ended up with the following compromise:
1. The motion approved a $2.50 fee, slightly higher than the $2.25 recommended by the County Staff and nearly twice the rate advocated by the BIA (but much reduced from the $6 square foot fee that advocates believe is needed to grow the Trust Fund large enough to build a significant amount of low-income housing);
2. It eliminated the cap favoring larger developments, an action which will make a huge difference to the accrual of funds in the Housing Trust Fund;
3. It requires 50% of the Housing Trust Fund fees to be dedicated to building affordable housing in new growth areas rather than in high-poverty neighborhoods. This provision was championed by Supervisor Serna who was our ally during this meeting, helping to maintain some positive elements in the proposed new ordinance;
4. The Housing Trust Fund will continue to be administered by Sacramento Housing and Redevelopment Agency, which has the experience and track record to build low-income housing;
5. The County Board agreed to revisit the success of the new ordinance at regular intervals.
Supervisor Phil Serna, Supervisor Roberta MacGlashan, and Supervisor Jimmy Yee voted in favor of the motion. Supervisor Don Nottolli, affordable housing's most consistent ally, voted against it, as he did not support this watered-down ordinance. Feel free to call or email
 | | Prayer after the vote. |
them to thank them for their vote.
This motion will receive a second reading and final approval in February. Stay tuned, because a similar battle is likely to occur in the very near future with the Sacramento City Council over their affordable housing ordinance. We feel encouraged that one of our congregation members, Sally Smith, is serving on a city council-established task force to look at the issue of low income housing.
