Greetings!

Forum on Church Finances

I put that in bold so people who are always wishing they had more information on the finances of the church would see this.  This Sunday we will be having a forum on church finances between the 9:00 and 11:15 services.  The forum will be in the Cathedral and will be run by Chris Tzimenatos, our vestry representative to the Finance Team, and Susan Wilson, our treasurer.   Copies of financial statements will be available.  For the really curious, we post our monthly financial reports on the bulletin board across from the Bookstore entrance, so you can keep abreast of our financial situation throughout the year.

For the not-so-curious, there will be a summary financial report at the evening annual meeting, but there won't be time to answer questions in any detail.

The annual dinner is at 5:30.  There are a few seats still available.  If you want to attend, call the church office at 446-2513.

We will be electing members of the vestry and delegates to the diocesan convention on November 14-15.  Information on nominees is available in this edition of the e-news (click here to view vestry nominees; click here to view convention delegate nominees).

I hope you can join us this Sunday for the dinner (5:30pm) and meeting (7:00pm.)

Blessings,

Brian

CLASSES FOR EPIPHANY 1

Through February 6

from 7 to 8:30 pm on

First Peter

Presented by the Rev. Dr. Peter Rodgers and four Fuller seminarians.

The First Epistle of Peter is a short and beautiful letter that outlines the heart of Christian faith and life. It is written to Christians in Asia Minor in the first century who are experiencing "suffering for the name of Christ." Peter writes to encourage them to stand fast and live Christ-like lives in the midst of these trials. Rich in Old testament quotations and allusions to the words of Jesus, and their application to God's people, the letter is as relevant today as it was in the days f earliest Christianity. For five weeks we will study together this remarkable letter.

The Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan

Presented by Susan Hotchkiss and Andre Jensen.

Come join us as we explore Jesus as we've never experienced him before.

"In Zealot, Reza Aslan doesn't just synthesize research and reimagine a lost world, though he does those things very well. Aslan rips Jesus out of all the contexts we thought he belonged in and holds him forth as someone entirely new. This is Jesus as a passionate Jew, a violent revolutionary, a fanatical ideologue, an odd and scary and extraordinarily interesting man." - Judith Shulevitz

Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian

Presented by Rev. Anne McKeever

This is a five-session series for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology: Who was Jesus? Who is God? What is salvation? How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community? Each week we'll view and then discuss a short DVD segment of a lecture and discussion led by Marcus Borg, retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture in the Philosophy Department of Oregon State University and the author of nineteen books.

SACT Logo Inclusionary Housing Policy

Do we want to roll back the clock on years of equitable housing policy?

Thanks to all Trinity members who have been speaking up to protect and expand affordable housing in the City and County, but we are not done yet!! If you possibly can, please attend the Sacramento County Board of Supervisors hearing at 2 pm on Tuesday, January 28th in the Sacramento County Supervisors' Chambers at 700 H Street. Our Sacramento ACT (Area Congregations Together) group is also planning an action just before the meeting.

***************

If you can't be there, please write to our supervisors.

SUGGESTED MESSAGE:

"PLEASE DO NOT JETTISON SACRAMENTO COUNTY'S INCLUSIONARY HOUSING ORDINANCE. AS A PERSON OF FAITH, I URGE YOU NOT TO IGNORE THE NEEDS OF OUR COUNTY'S LOW, VERY LOW AND EXTREMELY LOW INCOME RESIDENTS."

This website will give you the name of your supervisor and their contact information:  http://www.bos.saccounty.net/Pages/default.aspx

***************

SO WHAT'S THE STATUS?

Based on their meeting on January 16, it appears likely that our Supervisors will gut the existing inclusionary housing ordinance, removing the current mandate for the construction of a small percentage of low-income housing in larger housing developments. The proposal which seems to have majority support is a "fee-out" option for developers, with a fee so low that simple math shows it would fail to create the funds needed to build the new units desperately needed just to keep up with the growing need for low-income housing. In other words, our Supervisors are poised to give developers a pass, once more penalizing those at the bottom who have suffered the most during the economic downturn. And worst of all, because there is no longer a requirement to create mixed income developments, any low-income housing developments built from the trust fund would invariably create clusters of poverty, simply adding to the problems we currently face.

Low Income Housing Advocates don't have to guess at the outcome; if enacted, this disastrous public policy decision will result in more economic segregation, not less. Any short-term economic benefits for developers will be outweighed by the serious long-term consequences to the quality of life in our community.

We believe Sacramento County is turning a blind eye to poverty and missing out on the opportunity to create vibrant mixed neighborhoods where all income levels live, work and attend school.

When will we learn that we are our brothers' and sisters' keepers?

Canon Link and the Red Baron ride again!

For the last three years, I have been a part of NorCal AIDS Cycle, a three-hundred and thirty mile bike ride, which raises funds for agencies in our area serving those with HIV/AIDS. The non-profit agencies provide important services to those in our community who still suffer from this terrible disease. And though we are closer than ever to finding a cure, those who already have the virus are badly in need of the services these good agencies provide.

On this ten year anniversary of NorCal AIDS Cycle, I am again asking for your support. No contribution is too small (or too large!), and each will help continue badly needed services to someone right here on our community.

The Baron and I ride these long miles May 15-18, are counting on your support. Just click the link below to make a quick and easy contribution to NorCal AIDS Cycle! (NorCal AIDS Cycle is a 501(c)(3) corporation)
