"A Growing community making disciples who love and serve Christ and His world"

Greetings!

It's annual meeting time! One week from this Sunday, January 26, we will have our annual dinner and meeting. The dinner begins at 5:30 p.m. and the meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. From what I have heard, the tables for dinner are filling up quickly. We have added a few more tables to accommodate more guests. While we do conduct some important business, like electing members of the vestry and delegates to our diocesan convention, the annual meeting is primarily a time to hear about the status of the church and celebrate some of the exciting things that are happening. The evening ends with a few people receiving the Dean's Award. This is always a highlight as the surprised recipients hear their names read. Sign up sheets for dinner tables are posted in the Great Hall. We will have a presentation of the Cathedral budget on Sunday morning, immediately following the 9:00 a.m. service. The presentation will begin around 10:15 a.m. and will take place in the Cathedral. This presentation is designed to provide detailed information and answer any questions people may have about the budget or Cathedral Finances. Information provided later that evening at the Annual Meeting will be more general in nature. I know one topic of interest is the status of the lots next to the Cathedral we purchased last year. The short report is we are involved in the long and slow process of getting approvals from the City to develop the property. We do not have specific plans for what to build and will need to go through a congregation-wide exploration to discern these plans. We are likely years away from building a new building on the property. In the meantime, we are creating a community garden. There is a report of on this garden project included in this enewsletter. I appreciate your partnership in ministry and I hope you can be with us at our annual meeting and dinner.
Blessings, Brian
The Very Rev. Dr. Brian Baker Dean, Trinity Cathedral Sacramento, CA

Trinity 27th Street Community Garden: Let's get growing!
by Anita Williams
While Trinity's long-range vision is to construct a new multi-purpose building on the vacant parcels on 27th Street, the fundraising, design and permitting efforts for this endeavor are expected to take at least five to seven years. This led to a movement from within the Cathedral congregation to beautify the 27th Street parcels by establishing a community garden until the new building can be constructed.
To achieve this, the Trinity Community Garden Team was established. The Garden Team is now hard at work to start a temporary garden on the vacant 27th Street parcels. The vision for the garden is to provide a space for Trinity ministry teams and Trinity members to grow vegetables, herbs and flowers in plots they plant and maintain until Trinity has raised enough funds to construct a new building on the land. In the meantime, the garden
provides an opportunity to keep the vacant 27th Street parcels somewhat productive and from looking unsightly.
In October, a team of AmeriCorps workers provided some of the labor to remove weeds, trench and install the major irrigation lines as well as perform general site cleanup at the garden site. Facilities Director Dana Chamness coordinated with the City of Sacramento to re-establish water service to the site. Thanks to a very generous donation by Senior Gleaners, the garden now has several used agricultural bins which will be placed throughout the garden site in small groups and serve as raised bed planters in the garden plots.
But, there is still work to do and resources needed to get our temporary garden growing. Materials such as large quantities of garden soil for the raised beds, decomposed granite for accessible pathways, wood chips for other paths, hoses and spray nozzles. The Garden Team plans to have these items installed by the end of February.
To learn about how to become a gardener or to donate, speak with any of the Trinity Community Garden Team members: Paul Brosio, Dana Chamness, Donna Clark, Randy Cheek, Amy Dierlam, Charis Hill, Ruth Fitch, Georgianna Pfost, Kevin Sanders, Melissa Crowley, William Jaeger, Per Ostlund, Kevin Donohue, or Anita Williams.
Thanks for in advance for supporting your Trinity Community Garden.

CLASSES FOR EPIPHANY 1
Through February 6
from 7 to 8:30 pm on
First Peter
Presented by the Rev. Dr. Peter Rodgers and four Fuller seminarians.
The First Epistle of Peter is a short and beautiful letter that outlines the heart of Christian faith and life. It is written to Christians in Asia Minor in the first century who are experiencing "suffering for the name of Christ." Peter writes to encourage them to stand fast and live Christ-like lives in the midst of these trials. Rich in Old testament quotations and allusions to the words of Jesus, and their application to God's people, the letter is as relevant today as it was in the days f earliest Christianity. For five weeks we will study together this remarkable letter.
The Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth by Reza Aslan
Presented by Susan Hotchkiss and Andre Jensen.
Come join us as we explore Jesus as we've never experienced him before.
"In Zealot, Reza Aslan doesn't just synthesize research and reimagine a lost world, though he does those things very well. Aslan rips Jesus out of all the contexts we thought he belonged in and holds him forth as someone entirely new. This is Jesus as a passionate Jew, a violent revolutionary, a fanatical ideologue, an odd and scary and extraordinarily interesting man." - Judith Shulevitz
Embracing an Adult Faith: Marcus Borg on What It Means to Be Christian
Presented by Rev. Anne McKeever
This is a five-session series for those seeking a richer understanding of issues in contemporary Christian practice and theology: Who was Jesus? Who is God? What is salvation? How do we practice our faith? How do we live in community? Each week we'll view and then discuss a short DVD segment of a lecture and discussion led by Marcus Borg, retired Hundere Chair of Religion and Culture in the Philosophy Department of Oregon State University and the author of nineteen books.

Recognizing Informal Ministry by Members of Trinity Cathedral
by The Rev. Deacon Steve Skiffington
Last week I told you of the launch of this new occasional format for recognizing the Ministry Heart of parishioners. This week I'd like to share a ministry by Gail Brown and her daughter, Alyssa. You probably know them as an usher team you've seen on a Sunday morning. Alyssa has grown up before our eyes and this story is a shining example of what two concerned people, in this case a mother and daughter, can do with a Ministry Heart.
Since I am a mother, I love children, and have this maternal instinct to make sure they stay warm and dry, among other things. Also, I remember reading one of the Kit Kittredge books to my daughter, Alyssa, when she was little. One of the stories was when Kit donated her old coat to a little girl that was in a soup kitchen with her family. (This story is set in the early 30's during the Great Depression) Kit wished she had a coat for every child there.
When winter approached this year, I thought, what can I do to help? That 's when I came up with the idea to organize a coat drive. Mustard Seed School seemed the perfect fit! This is how I organized it: I emailed the parents at my daughter's school, and some of my customers. I told them that I was asking for donations of new coats for this particular school, and I gave a deadline that was two weeks away. In turn, I started receiving emails back from people eager and willing to donate a coat for these needy children. I picked up the coats at a central drop off location, and kept them at my house until the deadline.
On Dec. 20th, Alyssa and I dropped off the coats at Mustard Seed School! It was such a good feeling! We had more than enough coats for every child at the school!
